The next episode of Bones, set to air on December 3rd, is to be called The Gamer in the Grease and appears to be jam packed full of Avatar product placement. There’s a promo clip on Youtube, which you can see embedded below the break.

The show airs on Fox which is, of course, a sister wing of Newscorp. to 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the film and I don’t think we can blame them for wanting to promote this phenomenally expensive piece of product as well as possible. But it’s not just a product, it’s a piece of of creative expression too - hopefully an honest one - and it would be nice to think Bones is too, so it’d be quite sad to see them crossed-over in an empty, cynical way.

So, let’s watch this clip and then count the references to Avatar together.

  • There’s the title, on the cinema canopy and behind the woman crossing her arms.
  • There’s a queue of folk up to some deep blue Na’vi cosplay.
  • There’s a guy inexplciably saying “Avatar” between two words of the voice over man’s “Strange… New… World”, which is itself an evocation of Pandora.
  • “This is so much more than a movie” doesn’t relate explicitly to the film, but I’m sure Fox are trying to plant the association in our minds.
  • And, of course, there’s Joel David Moore, a Bones regular who also plays Norm Spellman in Cameron’s movie.

What did I miss?

I’m going to resist a certain online slang word for Avatar fans. I wish I could coin another - Savantars, maybe? Okay, didn’t work.

This is going to have to be some seriously gripping episode of Bones to take the audience’s mind off of all of the product placement. If it’s too distracting, of course, Fox might find a lot of viewers turning off and even brewing up a little resentment.

I've been really turned off by the hype for this movie. The story seems very rote and the effects are pretty but don't seem to justify the way this movie is being touted as some sort of second coming... I'm sure it will be fun and all but it just doesn't seem worth all the hubbub...

Avatar had product placement in lie to me also

  • I'll admit, Bones is one of my favorite shows, and it really kind of depresses me that it's being used like this. I hope most of the product placement is featured in the commercial and that it doesn't add up to too much in the overall episode.
  • Oh God, Bones is unwatchable for me the last few seasons
  • How is this any worse then the Fox "Simpsons Shout Out" week were they forced all there prime time shows to put a Simpson reference into an episode to "celebrate" the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons....just sayin. Product placement doesn't seem to bother me as much as it does the rest of the internet community so if I was a fan of Bones(which I am not) I doubt it would bug me.
  • BrendonConnelly
I never heard about that at all.

It was 2 weeks ago all of Fox's prime time shows House, Lie to Me, Fringe, Bones and I think Glee all participated. They had to add some kind of Simpsons reference into an episode and viewers were encouraged to find the reference as part of a contest. It's kind of a cool idea on paper but he's right it's not that different from what's going on with this yet nobody freaked out about it.

Never watched the show Bones and still won't even if Avatar is being integrated forcefully into this episode. This is such a tacky way of promoting.

Terrible, terrible idea. Leave it up to Fox to make such a callous move towards both their products.

I'm sure they'll be pumping tons of "Avatar" t.v spots during this episode too. Talk about promotional overload.

Does James Cameron approve this stuff?
  • EvanJDeBiase
    no. no he doesn't.
  • Federico
If its happening, it means he has to. He's the producer behind this. Both him and Landau have to say it's okay for it to happen.

Is anyone else really excited to see Avatar fail?
  • crash&burn
no it looks awesome and btw way all of you people are lame!
  • Steve_Kasan
Well with all the money put into Avatar, through blind faith of James Cameron, how else are they going to make their money back?
If I was an Executive at Fox, I'd probably do the same thing hoping audiences take wind of it because it will be so, so sad to see Avatar Ava-fail.
  • Aquigley
people actually watch these generic tv shows?
  • BrendonConnelly
    Why else would they exist?
  • bones isn't generic maybe watch it before you make such a statement. It may be a procedural but its one of the better shows on tv.
  • crash&burn
    damn straight
  • Propadanda
Ha, I thought the same thing, and then I watched an episode the other week and it was actually really fun.
  • crash&burn
    its a good show douche
  • i love bones but i dont want it being whored out like this.
  • Matt
why?! why does it bother you? it's just another bones episode! just with a lot of avatar in it. same characters, same booth and brennan, same jeffersonian lab team banter, just with an upcoming movie in their investigation.

Am I missing something??!!! why is everyone acting like this is the death of creativity?
  • crash&burn
    so true
  • greggorybasore
I love integrated product placement. It not only manages to make TV networks look idiotic but generally pisses off the target audience at the same time.

How? I don't understand what everyone's problem is. I'm from the UK, I saw it last night. I thought the whole sub-plot element of the three of them waiting to get into the cinema was hilarious. I didn't even know the guy who was in the film is also in Bones until today - I think it makes it even more ironic and funny! Just chill, it's seriously not a big deal and didn't detract from the show in any way, shape or form. And it hasn't made me want to see the film, I'm not that interested in it. Stop making a big drama out of pure entertainment.
  • Hopefully it will be less weird than the truly bizarre Bones Family guy cross-over last season. And last episode I caught an x-ray of Homer Simpson's head on one of the lab's computer monitors.
  • Matt
yeah that family guy thing was kinda weird. just random.
  • Matt
oh jeez you guys all need to relax. if any of you watch bones, you'd know that bones is all about commenting on different social groups. the main character is an anthropologist with a vast knowledge of different cultures and cultural tendencies.

my guess is that this avatar episode will focus on the "movie geek." the draw of Bones is not the complex plot of each episode, but the ongoing banter and discussion that often critiques/comments on society in a way.

avatar product placement will not ruin the creative process, simply determine the environment in which the writers can be creative. at its barest, Bones is a crime solving show. there is a new crime every episode. does it really bother you people that this one episode will have a lot of subject matter concerning an upcoming movie?

c'mon, it's one episode. the economy is bad. we should be encouraging networks to find ways to make extra money so that we as viewers do not suffer the consequences of lack of funding to our tv shows.

    Here here!

One thing you missed off the list was the strange glowing white flash-fades, the same as in the Avatar trailer.
  • RosanatorDA
the only time product placement has bothered me was that its always sunny episode that you folks at slash film posted about. 30 rock uses product placement in almost every episode, and that wins record numbers of emmys.
