Academy Announces 10 Best Animated Short Film Contenders

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the animated short films short list, a list of 10 shorts, narrowed down from 37 films, that will advance in the voting process for the 82nd Academy Awards. The Academy branch members will select five nominees from the ten titles. I have included the list of 10 short films after the jump, along with trailers/previews, or video embeds of the full short films, when available.

    Is there any place to see the full wallace and gromit? I don't see how that couldn't win...
  • It really isn't that great. I LOVE Wallace and Gromit, but Matter of Loaf and Death was a feature length idea squished into a short. The pacing is weird and the writing isn't nearly as clever as past Wallace tales have been. It's got it's funny moments but The Wrong Trousers it's not.

    If 'Cat Piano' doesn't win, it'll be very disappointing. Much better than 'Partly Cloudy', which I found OK but not amazing. 'Matter of Loaf and Death' was also underwhelming in my opinion.

    The cat piano was absolutely beautifully illustrated (I've always been a fan of film noir type styles - the blacks and blues gave a great underworld type tone). Plus, the narration and poetry really bought the story to life. Kudos Nick Cave.
    Did anyone else think the narration reminded them of the 'hard boiled cop' cut sequences of the Max Payne games? (Which I also loved).

    Cat Piano is pretty much just an endlessly long version of the mouse organ sketch from flying circus, isn't it?

    Plus, that sketch (although awesomely funny) doesn't have a damsel in distress, a ruthless bad guy, or Nick Cave lol.
