Kevin McKidd Talks Call of Duty and Rome Movies

Rome

Kevin McKidd deserves to be a bigger star than he is. The Rome and Journeyman star has been on Grey’s Anatomy for the past year or so, but even that’s not enough to get me watching Grey’s again. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players will know him as the voice of Captain “Soap” MacTavish, and it’s that hook into the franchise that makes us pause a bit when he starts talking about a Call of Duty film.  We’ve known for a while that a CoD movie is coming eventually, but McKidd’s recent comments to PopWrap hint that perhaps it may be coming along sooner, rather than later:

‘They were looking for a rough, Scottish actor in Hollywood they probably couldn’t get Gerard Butler, so they got the No. 2 Gerard Butler, me. I had no idea it would be so huge, and now there are talks of a feature film,’ he revealed to PopWrap. Then came the kicker, when asked if he would be bringing Soap to life in the movie, he said, ‘if the script is good, and Gerard isn’t available [laughs], then absolutely.’

Not much to go with, for sure, but he seems more aware of the movie adaptation than if it was just idle speculation. I’m just hoping he does get the casting call when the CoD movie gets going.

In that same story, McKidd also mentions that a script for the Rome film has been floating around, and that it’s “supposedly very good”. He confirms that if it does happen, he’ll definitely be reprising his role as Lucius Vorenus. I’m not sure how such a film will work on its own when a lot happens in the series’ two seasons, but I have faith creator Bruno Heller can work something out.

  • I've always liked Kevin McKidd. The first movie I saw him in was Topsy-Turvy, in which he plays a Victorian actor who demands to be allowed to wear a corset. He's certainly more deserving of movie stardom than Gerard Meathead Butler.

While the concept of a Call of Duty movie is highly dubious, if they're gonna do it then McKidd should definitely get the part. His v/o work in the game was pretty good.

Kevin McKidd has been choice in everything I've ever seen him -- from Dog Soldiers to Rome to Journeyman.

And a CoD movie based on MW and MW2 would kick butt. Hell, have it out in time to coincide with MW3.
  • If they make a Modern Warfare Movie, it need a better story. They story in MW2 was a freaking joke. If they do take the story from Modern Warfare 2, everything will be lost and they could hire Michael Bay for the director's chair. Anyway i think making a Modern Warfare Movie is a horrible idea.

I haven't played MW2 yet, without spoiling it, is it really that bad? I assumed from the trailers that it's going to be pretty over the top which in all honesty is exactly what MW shouldn't be.

But a COD MW movie would make more sense than a movie adaptation of a WWII game loosely based off of Saving Private Ryan.
  • Yes it's very bad. At the beginning there are many elements of Jingoism, which is one of the reasons why i loved the CoD Series: No Jingoism. The story itself is not only chaotic and very fast presented and the twist are ... just stupid. When they come you'll ask: Why? And you'll never receive the answer. Many plotholes, many stupid actions that lead to unrealistic events just too push things over the top. Modern Warfare was a fine game, Modern Warfare 2 is also a fine game, but the story drag things down to a Michael Bay level.
  • mbellerbrock
Ah yeah, mostly what I was worried about, that's too bad. I was worried as soon as I saw the first trailer involving a highly unrealistic chase scene on snow mobiles.
  • Uh, wow, then you'll definitely be disappointed. The chase scene is just the tip of the ice berg.
  • mbellerbrock
    Lol... great.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I loved the story for MW2. It stands among some of the best of them.
  • That's your Problem.

No that's his opinion just like you have yours.

    ***ROME SPOILERS***

Since ******* dies at the conclusion of the series, I'm assuming that the script for Rome places Vorenus and Pullo back in the 13th before Caesar crosses the Rubicon. It would be cool to seen how their friendship began. There were also large gaps (years) as the writers fast forwarded through the storyline. Any of those points might be worth exploring in more detail. (******* = Vorenus)
  • In the commentary for the last episode of Rome, the creators said they deliberately left *****'s death off-screen, just in case there was going to be a 3rd season. When Octavius is told of ******'s death, it could be read that he was being lied to, to protect ******. Sure, it would be a cheat if ***** was to show up in the movie, having 'suddenly got better,' but I like the character, so I wouldn't complain!

I hope you are right. Nothing could be better than to see those two back together doing dirt for Octavian/Augustus.
  • CoD movie cannot fail...

and in the quote was he saying gerard butler wouldnt do the voice or play the part if the movie happened? Because it seems like a role someone might want for a potential franchise
  • I'm not that sure, that Vorenus is dead. You never saw his dead body! On Rome you'd got to see him dead and rotting!
  • freemachine
Perhaps Pullo made everything alright by squishing a bug and praying to Apollo.
  • its CoD...they shudnt ruin the great franchise with wrong decisions about the movie...i m really lookin forward to CoD movie...

I thought the Modern Warfare 2 story was great. It was just presented in a bizarre and confusing manner. I'd love to see a war movie where it's not based on past battles, where it has up to date technology and daring things like America being fully invaded that fully change the status quo.

I think the creators had intended whoever they hired as Soap's voice actor to play him in a film because McKidd mentioned that they were looking for a Holywood
