Idris Elba Joins the Cast of Thor

idris-elba

The casting news for Kenneth Branagh’s Thor just keeps on coming. Recently we reported on the casting of The Warriors Three, and tonight we’ve learned that Idris Elba (The Wire’s Stringer Bell, RocknRolla) has joined the cast as Heimdell, “the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders.” I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised by this torrent of casting news since the film starts shooting in January.

The rest of the cast includes Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), and Natalie Portman. And let’s not forget the recently cast Warriors Three, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, and Stuart Townsend.

The plot, as we’ve reported before:

The movie’s story sees the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Elba recently had a good turn on The Office, and can be seen in the upcoming Takers and The Losers. Like many, I know him best as the eloquent and coldly calculating Stringer Bell from The Wire, and I’m glad to see that his career is taking off with big projects like this. He’s done his share of forgettable projects as well (Prom Night, Obsessed), but overall things are looking good for him.

Overall, Thor is shaping up to have an interesting cast, which it sorely needs. Like Iron Man, it’s going to be tough to sell yet another vaguely-known comic property to the moviegoing public, and recognizable faces will certainly help convince people to see the film.

  • Idris Elba is Awesome
The irony here being that Heimdall is commonly referred to as "the whitest of the gods"
  • mace
yes he was called "the whitest of the gods" but "whitest" refers to the light he emanated, not his skin color.
  • Thrillhouse
    Awesome. Just awesome.
  • Khuzud
Pretty sure there isn't any black people in Norse mythology.
  • freemachine
    Nevermind...
  • concretelogic
I'm fine with changing of races in adaptations, but isn't a black Norse god going to look a bit out of place?
  • A black dude up in Norway? Ummmm... what?
  • Octoberist
Well, this will probably be one of the rare roles when Idris Elba gets to use his native British accent in an American funded film..

(Yes, I'm sure that the Norse Gods will use British Accents unless they want to make it Norwegian accents.)
  • Feuer
Same here, don't mean to sound racist but...come on...black guy for Heimdall?....fail.
  • wESh
agreed, idris elba got my attention in everything he was in, i'm sure he will get the chance to show his skills but come on, a black guy as a norse god? now i hope he'll have long blond hair and the first installment in this franchise will be the last as well
  • If we neeeeed an explanation, Wikipedia says that Heimdell is a Norse adaptation of Gods from earlier cultures, with counterparts in Hindu and Roman mythology. So that's why he's so tan. THERE, now everyone take a breath.
  • Aquigley
I am a white Norse deity and am DEEPLY OFFENDED by this. Hollywood has to stop with this political correct ethnic casting, is it that hard to find a blond pale guy for the role? Just cast Fabio or something... geez.

A new low for movies.... just when I was getting over the lack of animals cast in pivotal roles for Dragonball Evolution, dont even get me started...

if you are upset you should complain that Thor is not been played by a Norwegian actor. plus also this is Marvel version of Thor the real Thor you talking about is red-haired and got a bearded. in Norse mythology Thor travels in a chariot drawn by goats Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. in Marvels Thor he does not travel in a chariot.

Marvel Thor always was different from the actually Thor from Norse mythology.
  • al
imagine Thor having a sequel. half of the budget will be their actors fee doubled
  • dr_hamburger
which is why marvel is going to have the same problem they had w/ iron man 2 where they try to lowball everybody. i gaurantee you at least one of thors cast members doesnt return for any sequels ala terrence howard. that guy got screwed!

I've never read the comic book so can someone fill me in, do they take liberties with using non-scandanavian people for the Gods. It just seems odd to see an Asian and African American cast as Norse Gods, is this a decision the movie people are making or are the characters in the comic book the same?
  • JMoney Mad
He's Black British, not "African American".
  • Yes, Stan and Jack flagrantly rewrote Norse myths to suit their needs. That included characters of different ethnicities in Asgard because it was a comic book and anything can be possible.
Also Branagh has a history of color blind casting choices. Denzel Washington played Keanu Reeves brother in his adaptation of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.
Heimdell was was never depicted as black, but it doesn't matter since we have an actor of Elba's caliber playing him. Thank you Branagh.

No, they don't take liberties with the colour of the Norse Gods in Marvel Comics, so Heimdall should be played by a white man, this is just stupid. As for the Asian guy, he must be playing the part of Hogun. Hogun is a made up chracter that is not based on a God in Norse mythology and in the comics Hogun looks Mongolian so that is why they have got an Asian to play him.

But apart from that, they are all white, including Heimdall, so this is very annoying and stupid. I'm a HUGE Thor fan, but I'm not looking forward to this stupid film one bit.

cry you little baby. Marvel Thor is not even the same as Norse mythology Thor at all.
  • Travis McGee
When I first read the title, I thought they were going to cast him as T'Challa, The Black Panther and King of Wakanda. Which would have been an amazing move, cause then they could of spun the character of into his own film or put him into the Avengers movie.
I wonder why MARVEL is making this move? It seemed like they wanted to keep continuity to the comics, wether it be the 616 Universe or the Ultimate Universe (Sam Jackson as Nick Fury.)
  • The_Kid
I don't think it matters who's cast as long as the acting is superb, which it will be because Elba 's a good actor. I think this movie is gonna be awesome either way.
  • B Dawk.
You realized your getting upset over black man being cast as a fictional character from mythology and a comic book right.

I mean it's not like they cast him as John Lennon in a Beatles Bio Pic. It's a movie about man flying around with a big Fn Hammer.

    You people need to chill.
  • NillerJ
    Stupid comment is stupid.

If you make a fictional movie about the somalian pirates you don't go and cast Paul Bettany do you? He's a norse god for f's sake. I'm a huge Elba fan and I don't get this casting. He will rock it no doubt, but especially Heimdal is widely represented in norse mythological literature and not just some random god running around.
  • NillerJ
Elba rocks but a black dude playing the ever so white Heimdal?

    No matter, it's hollywood, I suppose. It's just...he's...norse..
  • JMoney
Shit, sorry, I wasn't sure what kind of filter they have on the comment section and it's a touchy subject, I didn't want my comment to be censored so I went with what i thought was the most politically correct statement.

And I didn't know he wasn't american, I've only seen him on The Office and he didn't have an accent.
  • Tom Strong
Makes no sense. There were no African-Norwegians in ancient Norway, and they didn't worship any either. This casting is anthropologically, historically, and logically impossible.

Would a black King Arthur make sense set the dark ages? Nope. Would casting Grace Park as Heimdall make sense? An asian woman? Nope.
  • But the comic also features characters of other races and nationalities. They're not retelling Norse mythology here, it's comic book adaptation. I don't see his casting being all that distracting..
  • terry
Devindra Hardawar it seems that Idris Elba always wanted to play a Marvel character the first place. he had a Q&A for Prince's, Idris is a new Prince's Trust ambassador.

    i mean Q&A for Prince's Trust

so what about white actors playing asian and black on film i bet you did not say anything. i.e. Angelina Jolie played a black woman in "A Mighty Heart". it was based on Mariane Pearl life.
  • EvanJDeBiase
Elba is a natural talent and I've enjoyed everything he's been in so far. From a few episodes of the office to his role in American Gangster, he's shown he's got it. Maybe a black Norse god sounds weird but if anyone can pull it off, it's Idris.
  • There is huge HUGE irony in this casting, but brilliance on Brannagh's part. Idris Elba is like the Chris Cooper of this movie. I'd watch anything with Stringer Bell.
  • william
    unreal,and totaly rediculous.
im a follower of the norse religion. stan lee said thor was such a world respected god, that he deserved a comic. when you boast like that, you should stick to the stories, comic or not.
heimdall is known as the whitest of gods for his shine, but in ynglinga saga he is described in great detail.....white pale cold skin, searing blue eyes, and gold/silver shinning hair. the casting isnt affirmative action, its just ugly political correctness. im gonna see the movie, and im gonna take a glimpse at heimdall, but if i dislike the look, ill just close my eyes and imagine him,how i know he realy looks. and btw.....marvel has depicted 2 thors, one is the younge, one is the elder. both are interpretations of thor in different stages of his growth. the heimdall casting is just disrespectful and retarded.

"Idris Elba (The Wire’s Stringer Bell, RocknRolla) has joined the cast as Heimdell, 'the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders.'"

A black guy as a security guard character............ how progressive! :/

Worf from ST:TNG, Capt Typho in SW.............really the list goes on and on. Why not cast the black guy as Thor? Oh, that's right, the black is only good for showing off his prison yard built physique and being an order following brute. Riiiiiiiiiight. ;o
