will-ferrell-land-of-the-lost

Consider this a follow up of sorts to our recent piece on the death of the movie star: Forbes has compiled a list of the top ten overpaid stars in Hollywood. Topping the list is Will Ferrel—who has had a string of box office duds lately (Land of the Lost’s failure comes to mind), yet still commands a high salary. According to Forbes, Ferrell’s films earn an average of $3.29 for every dollar he was paid. Compare that to Forbes’ most bankable star, Shia Lebeouf, whose movies make an average of $160 for every dollar of his compensation.

Second on the list is Ewan McGregor, who doesn’t command a high salary, but his films post-Star Wars have generally performed poorly (Angels and Demons being the big exception). For every dollar he was paid, his recent films made an average of $3.75.

To devise their figures, Forbes looked at Hollywood’s 100 biggest stars, calculated their overall earnings on each of their films (but skipped animated films), and also calculated an operating income from each film’s budget vs. earnings. With that information, they proceeded with the following:

We added up each star’s compensation on his or her last three films and the operating income on those films and divided total operating income by the star’s total compensation to come up with each return-on-investment number.

Some names on the list are somewhat surprising, like Billy Bob Thornton and Ice Cube, but it’s usually because their recent films have been performing exceptionally poorly, and not due to high salaries. Others are certainly expected, including Eddie Murphy, Tom Cruise, and Jim Carrey.

Of course, these calculations rely on how successful films are financially, and not necessarily how good they are. For example, Norbit was actually a hit, and kept Eddie Murphy from topping the list. But if Eddie Murphy made dozens of movies like Norbit that were each massively successful, I’d still personally consider him vastly overpaid for making lazy and dumb movies.

Discuss: Do you agree with this list? Who else would you consider overpaid? Do you think quality also needs to be calculated to be truly accurate?

  • Interesting post. I wouldn't consider Ewan Mcgregor an overpaid star, but I guess if you're unlucky enough to be in a string of big budget films that perform poorly then you're a contender for this list.
  • The logic behind Forbes' article is flawed. I like Shia LeBeouf, but listing him as Hollywood's "most bankable star" suggests people went to see movies like Transformers and Indiana Jones 4 specifically for him, which we all know is not the case.

Compare that to Will Ferrell, who despite being listed as Hollywood's "most overpaid star", actually was one of the main box office draws for many of his films. I seriously doubt Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory and Step Brothers would've passed the $100 million mark without Ferrell's name attached. Transformers, on the other hand, would've performed just fine without Shia LeBeouf.

Agreed. They also don't take into account a lot of the films that "bomb" are films that are marketed horribly and dumped. "Lucky You" sat on the shelf for a year and then got limited promotion and bad release date. Barrymoore wasn't even close to being the center of that marketing campaign either. "Mr. Woodcock" also sat on the shelf and got awful reviews.

And if they're not going to include The Dark Knight for Aaron Eckhart they shouldn't include Indiana 4 for LeBeouf. Eckhart had just as much of a role in TDK as LeBeouf did in I4, he was hardly the lead.
  • Ewan is worth it thu...not sure bout Ferrall... i just luv Moulin Rouge!

Shia Lebeouf most bankable star thats just stupid. people did not watch the movie cause he star in Transformers 1 and 2 and Indiana Jones 4.

Yeah, the list isn't that great. Replace any unknown 12 year old with Daniel Radcliffe from the beginning of the Harry Potter series and they'd still make a killing.

I think McGregor has just chosen a couple of bad films lately, he's certainly the most appealing actor (along with Cruise lolol) to me on the list.

I don’t know If I said it already but …Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks.

  • You guys are ignoring that this list is strictly a numbers thing. I mean it's FORBES for crying out loud. Just take it for what it is.
  • Enrique did you actually finish the article? I say that pretty clearly right at the end :P

There needs to be a cap on these outragous salaries. Nobody deserves to make millions while so many people are losing their jobs. Cap all actors income at $50,000 a year, and take the rest away in taxes.

Yes, because obviously the government would put it to good use. Perhaps I am being obtuse, but I fail to see how that would help anything.

Anyway, the list kind of surprises me. Though, its just a list. Its interesting, but that's about it.

$50,000? Wow Bob, you sound like a nice guy... I won't argue that actors are often overpaid, but that's free market society for you, although from the sounds of things I'm sure you don't approve of the free market. Even if you don't though, $50,000?! Someone who works as hard as Robert Downey Jr. or George Clooney surely deserve more than a rookie college grad is making.

Shia is a douche. Despite the many misses, Ferrel deserves every penny for stripping down to his underwear. Oh, and Talladega was the shit: "Tom Cruise, save me from the the witchcraft!" LOL!
  • I think the article's accurate enough: based on pure statistics. Having to tilt it because of one factor or another would be too complicated.
Will Ferrell's name at the top surprises me, but just shows he is being overpaid for the draw he actually has. Ewan McGregor's name is interesting. However, given how much Incendiary/Deception bombed (two films I'd never heard of until I checked imdb there now) it's not that surprising.

And so one, and so forth. If you go through the list and see each actor's last 3 films, you can see exactly why they're overpaid. To studios the pay of an actor should be proportional to the extra number of people willing to see the movie because of them.
Films like The Hangover show us you don't need Ferrell in a starring role to have a successful comedy.

As for the most bankable stars: again based on pure stats, of course LeBeouf is at the top. And as for his draw, both Disturbia and Eagle Eye prove he has some. Neither were franchises or had any other significant stars attached but made good money on their investment. (Around $100 million each on their budgets from theaters alone)
