abrams-star-trek

Star Trek 2 details are floating all over the place following a recent event to promote the film’s DVD and Bluray release. Sci Fi Wire reports that both J.J. Abrams and writer/producer Damon Lindelof have stated that 2012 is pretty much the earliest we can expect the film, especially since they haven’t started writing yet and are still bouncing ideas around. Abrams also won’t confirm he’s directing the sequel since it makes little sense for him to commit to a film with no script.

And even though everyone wants Khan to be the next villain, they’re still not any closer to confirming the former villain’s place in the story. Right now it seems like they’re just keeping everything open.

More details, and a Khan casting rumor after the break.

Lindelof also mentioned that they’re interested in playing with time in the sequel. Given his experience with time shifting narratives in Lost, and that it’s something Abrams toyed with in Alias, I wouldn’t be surprised if this thought nugget evolves into a significant part of the sequel. Says Lindelof:

One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something. And the question that you’re asking yourself is: Where am I in relation to the last time I left these guys? Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later? Who knows? So we’re not going to tell you.

ComingSoon is also running with an interesting rumor from one of their sources: Abram’s current favorite actor for Khan, if they were to cast him today, is Nestor Carbonell—better known as Richard Alpert on Lost. He certainly has the look down, and Abrams is also known to recast people he’s worked with before, but I’m thinking that they’ll probably aim for a bigger name actor if they actually go with Khan as a villain.

Discuss: Do you think Khan will fit into Abram’s Trek-verse? Who would you like to see play him?

  • I wouldn't be surprised if they use an actor with similar notoriety as Nestor Carbonell. How known were Pine and Quinto before Star Trek happened.
  • Schplerka
Nestor was the mayor in Dark Knight. Four years after that, Khan.
  • Nestor Carbonell would be awesome.
  • AWhitman
exactly what I was gonna say.
  • freemachine
Carbonell is a poor choice, unless of course you want to see Khan sporting eye-liner. Also, if Abrams is going to bring back Khan, let's get someone with some Indian ancestry. The character's full name is Khan Noonien Singh for crying out loud!
  • Nickssfsn
That's a good point about the name, and I like Nestor, but if it's going to be anyone latino, I feel like it has to be Banderas. If they want a big name it has to be Banderas. Not that there aren't handsome latin lotharios waiting in the wings.
  • freemachine
Good call, though I feel the need to point out that while Ricardo Montalban was consider Latino, Banderas is Spanish. Yes, there is a huge difference.
  • Rob0729
I agree. Khan is not suppost to be Latino although he was played by a Latino. If they are going with someone from the JJ Abrams TV universe, Naveen Andrews is a better choice.
  • Eric
The eyeliner argument is pretty tired.... try again!
  • Bob
And why we are at it, lets make sure the actors playing Vulcans and Klingons are actually Vulcan or Klingon.
  • Anthony Dunham
That hardly has anything to do with it. Carbonell, if you look at him, could easily fit the Khan image. Put Montalban next to him, and you can see it...
  • He looks like an earlier Montalban, not so much the second movie. So I could see him in an earlier setting like the past movie was. My question is, can he deliver the role, not just look like it. Ricardo did bring a certain breadth to the role and isn't easily matched.
  • Haymaker
Personally I would like to see them introduce Khan in the next installment but not as the villain yet, but of course ending the movie with Kirk causing Khan to seek revenge setting him up as the villain in the 3rd movie. If they plan to have more then two that is.
  • evilninjax
Well, i suppose they could time-travel back to the Eugenics Wars so we could see Khan's rise to power. And then Kirk et al could intervene and send Khan off into the Botany Bay only to be picked up by ... TOS Kirk, etc...
  • Mecline
I thought the general sentiment was that Khan shouldn't be the main villain of the sequel so that the new time-line could grow into its own rather than just feed off the original trek movies? Personally I have no real problem with seeing Abram's take on Khan as he is definatly the most iconic trek villain but at the same time Nero was portrayed as Spock's Khan to an extent and to make the actual Khan the focus of its sequel seems almost lazy.
  • righteousplaid
Right, so they spend a movie establishing the "new Trek" in an exciting alternate timeline with endless possibilities and then they... rehash a villain from an old movie. Ugh. Come up with something new.
  • John
    Exactly! Completely agree.
  • Not exactly. They did create a new timeline, but the timeline was changed after Khan was exiled to space. He was sent to space in the Botney Bay in 1996 according to Space Seed. So, yes it would be an old villian, but it is still possible in this new timeline.
  • hmm
Playing with time-wow original. Bring back Khan-even more original.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Lol... for reals. We're only one film into the new continuity and that one was laden enough with time travel.

Hopefully they'll stop blowing up planets/old family members.... There is no shock value in it, only annoyance. I'm still trying to figure out if they even like the series or if they purposely killed off Vulcan, Spock's mom, Kirk's Dad, etc. because they secretly hate the show.

Like many others I have to admit to experiencing a rush when watching Abrams' fresh take on the Trek franchise. Plot-wise, there was enough for three movies, four spin-off novels and a TV pilot. But now what? More of the same? More cowboys and injuns in outer space? More nods to Star Wars? Of course, if you pause and think seriously about things, it becomes apparent there's no way in hell an outfit like the Federation would allow a bunch of 20-year-olds to single-handedly undertake diplomatic, interstellar chores. There needs to be a sage-like figure on board. And wouldn't it be amazing to see a Trek film where, for once, someone doesn't collect it on the jaw? Say what you will about the 1979 feature, but in its failure it did attempt to show that brains and compassion will always win out over brawn and bravado. All that changed with the militaristic re-introduction of Khan. And now, based on the current crop of rumours, we're back to that scenario again? Hey, J.J., there's a cool old dude out there by the name of Harlan Ellison. Not only did he write the best-ever episode of the original TV series, but he also had a grand concept for the first motion picture that was never used. Put down the knuckle-dusters and phasers for a moment and pay the grand old geezer a visit. He may be the sage your beloved Enterprise needs if it is to avoid the wrath of, well, you know...the critics.
  • pimp
    Quiet you.
  • papasanchez
If khan is in this movie it should be at the end of ST2. I would like to see the ST cast a bit more, maybe see them gelling as a squad against Klingons, who knows. As Khan is such a legend we might care little about the rest of the crew if he was in the 2nd from the off. ST was the introduction, two is the middle and three could be the epic finale. Keep him for the 3rd.

As for NC to play Khan? Doesn't work for me personally.

Can't think of anyone at the moment.
  • The next Star Trek movie is going to SUCK BALLS. Mark my words. They got lucky w/ the first and are going to fuck up the sequel. I mean, the writers are responsible for TRANSFORMERS 2!!!.
  • papasanchez
The writers did write transformers 2 but I feel that michael bay may have changed things around.....alot!
  • i can't argue that! keeping my fingers crossed. just hoping for originality in future Star Trek. i think giving nods to the "fans" will only harm any future installments. let's move on to new & interesting! :-)
  • papasanchez
    I agree.
  • As I understand, the script was unfinished when the writer's strike happened. So Bay just started production with a draft.
  • Matt
as well as Fringe, Transformers 1, a bunch of Alias, The Island, and MI3.

How can you say they got lucky? the movie was great
  • will1138
I'm keeping my expectations low for now. Hopefully they'll use an original idea.
  • Frank
What is the deal with bringing Khan back? Can't they think of something original?
The original movie "The Wrath of Khan" is seen (by some) as the best Star Trek flick to date, so why do a remake?

I was disappointed by this year's Star Trek, and I won't get my hopes up for the next installment.
  • If Khan must be brought back, get Javier Bardem to play him.
  • Matt
Oh wow. Bardem's a great pick. I think we have found our winner.
  • Michael
    No Khan!!!!!!!!!!!
  • rcesm
You won't find someone like Ricardo Montalban for the role of Kahn. I'm really not sure they should try. There is PLENTY of lore to do the movies with. I'd let this one rest.
  • darsfog
NO KHAN NO KHAN NO KHAN!!!!!!

Common give me something NEW!!!! A lot of people are making good points, Listen to us J.J. NO KHAN!!!!!

I am a trekkie, been one since i was 5, I love STII and i love KHAN, but i still say NO KHAN!!!
  • They really shouldn't redo Khan. Cause I mean, there's absolutely no way they're gonna be able to top the original. Why set yourself up for failure?
  • Solid
All I care about is seeing Uhura strip again. Sue me.
  • Matt
    when did uhura strip?
  • I have no problem with Khan being in any of the new Trek timeline. In fact I'd love to see him in an Abrams Trek movie, but only if handled correctly.

Khan was such a good villain in Star Trek II mainly because he had a prior backstory and motivation for revenge already in place. In this new timeline, no one has met Khan yet. I say they go ahead and cast a relative unknown (Nestor Carbonell would be great) and ensure that they're on for two films. Set it up in the upcoming movie somewhat like Space Seed, and then have the third be about Khan seeking out revenge.
  • Star Trek 12.

Star Trek 2 came out in 1982.
  • deeteer
That Star Trek doesn't count anymore. Sorry !!! :(
  • ryz
    KKKKHHHAAAAAAANNNN

Bring him in for the sequel
  • John
Khan in Star Trek II is classic. Leave it alone and create a new villain. Give us something original. It can't be that hard to write Kirk ticking off some new villain in the galaxy.
  • Michael
I absolutely agree, leave Khan alone. This a new ST universe, with a new look and a new feel. Create a villain that is part of this universe first, and then maybe visit Khan a couple more movies down the road.
  • redhawk23
seriously they have the opertunity to tell new great stories with the characters we know and love, reusing kahn would leave me severly shortchanged
  • JedK
    No Khan!
Why do Star Trek movies always have to have a single villain. Some of the best of Original Series and Next Gen had stories that didn't have just one villain but dealt with entire planets or races. Do fans need to focus on one person?
  • zoey
make the next one about rescuing r2d2 plz ffs.
  • Tabor
It could be interesting to have Khan, especially to see Nestor Carbonell in the role, but only as long as you aren't doing some rehash of Star Trek 2. I think it would be awesome to have the story from TOS episode Space Seed turned into a film.
  • mbellerbrock
Ugh... all around bad news. Time travel almost ruined the first one. Why continue to play with it, especially if it's the guys behind Lost doing it, that show fell apart into a colossal disaster. Nestor Carbonell is just creepy too.

And something I've never seen discussed. How are they going to do Khan's backstory if they show his "wrath." I hardly think a 30 minute opening introduction would suffice.

Call me overdramatic, but I'm honestly beginning to wonder if the awesomeness of the first one was just a fluke, I really don't want the sequel to disappoint...
