Carl Erik Rinsch to Direct 47 Ronin

47 ronin

Commercial director and Ridley Scott protege Carl Erik Rinsch has finally found a project for his feature film directorial debut. Rinsch is in final talks to helm the Keanu Reeves epic period samurai film 47 Ronin (not to be confused with the adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel Ronin). Rinsch is not only Scott’s protege, a commercial director for Scott’s company RSA, but he is also romantically involved with Ridley’s daughter Jordan. So basically, he’s “in the family.”

You might recognize Rinsch’s name as he was originally tapped to direct a prequel/remake of Alien, but Fox convinced Ridley Scott to helm the project himself. I was one of the few people actually interested in Rinsch’s involvement. Rinsch’s commercials show an amazing sense of imagination, visual effects artistry and composition. We’ve profiled his amazing commercials on the site, more than once. If you havent checked them out yet, you should do so now.

Variety says that the film is a “priority” “large budget” project for Universal, which makes it all the more unusual that the studio is entrusting a first time feature director with the potential tentpole feature. Wanted screenwriter Chris Morgan has described the project as a “great, Gladiator-esque, 300-like big action movie with samurai and ninja.”

“It’s a time in Japanese culture when it was all about [the] bushido [code] and honor, and putting internal things over external things — swords that were made to be functional instead of ornamental, that kind of stuff,” Morgan previously told MTV. “this turning point in the culture when that started to shift. Society started to be more about external kind of things. The story is about these samurai whose lord is killed in an unfair way.”

Based on a true 18th Century Japanese story, the film follows a band of samurai swordsmen who are shamed into becoming the titular ronin — a Japanese word meaning lordless samurai, and must avenge the death of their master. The construct a huge plan and sacrifice everything to see it through.

I was really excited to see Rinsch direct a sci-fi project, as his commercials suggest he would be great at creating imagery in that visual arena. I’m not sure how I feel about Keanu playing a samurai, but if the project is even half as good as Morgan is hyping it up to be, combined with the potential of Rinsch, count me in.

So is it set in Japan? How does Reeves come into the equation? Wouldn't it be great if they took the same idea and made it sci-fi instead?

    Keanu. Stop.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Are you sending a telegram. Stop. Your opinion is stupid. Stop.

If this is based on a true 18th Century Japanese story how would it be sci-fi?
  • WAS is the key word. As I mentioned, he was attached to direct the Alien reboot... This is not a sci-fi project
  • bangoskank
I thought you might have meant that but as mention of the Alien reboot was in the second paragraph I thought that it had been dismissed from the article by the time you wrote about your enthusiasm for Rinsch's sci-fi project. My apologies.

Yeah, why Keanu Reeves? It's about time more exposure is given to talent that deserves it.. like Tadanobu Asano,
  • hey you
This will be scifi/fantasy/action movie. It is not a historical period piece/ Memoirs of a Geshia / Amelia thing. It's why it is getting a big budget. If Universal was planning on it being a historical biopic, it would be getting a budget next to nothing and a far different director.

47 Ronin sci-fi/fantasy? Sounds dreadful. Hopefully Universal will grow a pair, can the Keanu crap, and try for something more like Seven Samurai... with Japanese actors... spoken in Japanese.. with subtitles. One can only dream.

Sounds like you want a boring remake of a movie that's been done several times. That's what Netflix is for. Give me the Lord of the Rings meets Gladiator version with Mr. "I know kung fu" Reeves and mind blowing special effects. Otherwise, there would no point in making the movie (again).

ive never said "FIRST" in my life.....

    so close.......

hey peter put up another post please

on topic: i am not crazy about seeing keanu in a samurai film. its like the last samurai all over again
  • Kenobi ja?
I don't think this is a straight up Samurai movie. Some other site described it as having fantastical elements like LORD OF THE RINGS. I think that is where the director's scifi background is coming in.
  • The tale of the 47 Ronin has been adapted many times before in Japan, for both stage and screen, but I'm skeptical that it'll work as well with American audiences who haven't been exposed to the story before they walk into the theater. Furthermore, the screenwriter's description is a bit discouraging. Part of the setup is that Japan's samurai are no longer a warrior class, but are instead elite bureaucrats. The Ronin were indeed following the bushido in their vengeance, but their actions were noteworthy because this was NOT a society that was focused on making functional swords.

What's next, Keanu using blackface to play M.L.K?
  • mcfly
    Better him than Tom Cruise
  • alex
free, that's very way off the cliff there.

    mcfly's point is beyond understatement
  • jimbo134
maybe the main Character is half Japanese half european. something sorta like an irish in the itai mob
  • freemachine
Not that I anything about Japanese history, and I'm too lazy to Wiki, but I'd guess that a half-Japanese european wouldn't be allowed to be a Samurai. Kind of how like a half-Italian can't get "made".

So we're about to have battling 47 RONIN films? The other one SAIGO NO CHUSHINGURA being produced by WB Japan and starring Yakusho Koji, iirc.
  • Mojo jojo
Yep. Some version of the story is always being redone in Japan, be it in manga, tv, plays or movies. It's kind of like Robin Hood or King Arthur is to the West. But Ridley Scott's Robin Hood isn't Prince of Thieves or Men In Tights or that British tv show that just got canned. The stories are eternal, but each reiteration focuses on different aspects.
  • the original is very good. A Japanese classic actually. Skip this Keaneu Reeves trash, most insulting remake ever, white people shouldn't be in remakes where there are NO white people in the original. Unless it is something like the departed where they change cultural time and location. possibly it could be converted into a mod-western.
  • hello again
Kind of like this trash comment that you've left word for word on several movie sites, jerk mccoy. Should we be insulted you didn't post it here first, or impressed by your persistence? Or maybe just pitying?
