thor-warriors-three

Following up on the recent news that Thor will start shooting in January, we’ve also caught wind of some casting additions. Tonight we’ve learned that Ray Stevenson (Rome, Punisher:Warzone), Tadanobu Asano (Ichi the Killer, Mongol), and Stuart Townsend (The League of Extraordinary Gentleman) have joined the project as “The Warriors Three”, a group of Asgardian badasses who fight alongside Thor. They’ll be joining the likes of Chris Hemsworth (as Thor), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), and Natalie Portman.

While Hemsworth didn’t seem like inspired casting for the film, I’ve been intrigued by all the other casting choices director Kenneth Branagh has made. Now I just wished that Stevenson’s Rome compatriot Kevin McKidd landed the role of Thor so we could get something resembling the further adventures of Vorenus and Pullo (with the welcome addition of the whole Norse god business).

Apparently, Stevenson will take on the role of “Volstagg the Valiant”, Asano will be “Hogun the Grim”, and Townsend will portray “Fandral the Dashing”. The characters are Marvel creations, and not based on Norse mythology. Looking at the picture above, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out which characters fit the actors. I just hope they don’t go overboard on the giant gut thing for Stevenson.

I can’t say much regarding Townsend, having thankfully forgotten most everything I saw in LXG and Queen of the Damned, but I can confirm that the addition of Stevenson and Asano is downright inspired. Stevenson kicked untold amounts of ass in Rome and Punisher: Warzone, and he’s simply perfect for the role of a beefy fighter. Asano has been a favorite of mine since Ichi: The Killer and Takeshi Kitano’s recent Zatoichi, and I’m hoping this role serves to further his presence in America as he completes the Mongol trilogy.

Discuss: What do you think of this casting? If you’re a fan of the comics, do you think the choices seem appropriate? Is there anyone else you would have liked cast for The Warriors Three?

Awesome. Tadanobu Asano is seriously awesome. Everyone should see "Electric Dragon 80,000V". He rules in that movie. I'm very excited about Thor, I think Branagh's definitely on the right track.
  • The Great Cambino
Hell yeah, I love him too. It's awesome he's going to be in an American summer tentpole.
  • he's definitely one of the finest, greatest actors of his generation (and that includes international cinema, outside Japan)
  • Pathos Perks
Not just ED80K, but also Survive Style 5+ and Last Life in the Universe. He's been in tons of great flicks, but those are my favorites. Suggest thing very much to someone whom loves a off-beat comedy and a great drama.

Two of my fav flicks EVAR.

    Great casting. Asano is amazing.
  • his performance in ICHI THE KILLER was great. I think the movie was horrible, but his performance was totally worth watching out for.

Can't say I'm excited or disappointed with Townsend, I'm not familiar with his work. That being said, Ichi has been one of my favorites since the first time it made me want to curl up in a ball and never leave my room. Moreover, Ray Stevenson is the best part of Rome, and that's saying a lot. I could not be more happy with the cast so far, except maybe Portman, but who knows? I'm prepared for her to surprise me. If anyone can make it happen, it's Brannagh.
  • Townsend was decent as Gray in League and wasn't horrible in Queen of the Damned which was horrible itself, so I guess that is a plus, right?

Stevenson and McKidd made Rome unforgettable. I'd love to see them pair up again and kick some ass.

An Australian is playing Thor? I thought Stellan Skaarsgard was a shoe-in for the part. Oh, well.
  • evanz
Whoops, I meant Alexander Skaarsgard. Although I'm sure his father would do a fine job. ;)
  • Corran Horn
Well, Stellan will be appearing in THOR. We just don't know who he'll be playing yet.
  • Alexander Skarsgard is so hot... oh man.
  • I was just talking to a friend yesterday about this and he mentioned that Hogun should be played by an Asian actor. Good call on Ken's part IMO.Now all we need to know is who will be cast as Donald Blake, Balder and Hiemdall. Plus, I'm aching to see the costumes Ken chose to go with in the first few production stills.

This is great casting. It's going to be nice to see Stevenson using his comedic chops (as Vollstagg is traditionally the comic relief among the Asgardians). No prosthetic gut can be too large for the role. He was a great Frank Castle, but the role only allowed him to glower. That will be Asano's gig in this movie, playing the straight man to the fat guy and the fop.

Also: IS the Mongul trilogy being completed? I haven't heard anything about the second film even being in pre-production.
  • As far as we know, the second film is going to be called "The Great Khan" and is in pre-production. Given that the first film was pretty successful, I think we'll at least see the second film.
  • Corran Horn
Excellent news. Each of these guys strike me as a perfect fit for their respective role.

As for Hemsworth, I liked his short appearance in Star Trek and if he's good enough for Branagh, he's good enough for me.
  • Phoenix
Hmmm. I gotta say, I love the casting of Stuart Townsend. He has the right air to play a 'dashing' character and enough athleticism to make me believe in him as a fighter. Good choice, there. Stevenson will have to convince me, though, never having watched Rome.
  • starscream9289
But Stevenson already played The Punisher.

He can't be in 2 Marvel movies playing 2 completely different characters.

    Can he?
  • Liam
Why not? Ryan Reynolds is (Deadpool and Green Lantern).
  • Deadpool is Marvel, Green Lantern is in DC. Thus there is no issue of the same person being two people within the same universe. That being said, however, Stevenson should be fine as Punisher: Warzone will likely not crossover into the universe of Marvel properties that is being created post-Iron Man.
  • Stark
Were the Jude Law and DeNiro castings ever confirmed, or were they just rumours?
  • I believe these are the parts they were rumored for, so I'm pretty sure this is the death knell for all that talk.
  • riverman
Well, yes, they call him "The Streak!"
  • crap leads
Hey kenneth, wake up and fire your lead who will play Thor, cause he can't act his way out of a paper bag. Did you see him in star trek. Yeah I really believed that crappy performance.
