CRAZY HEART

When I reported on Crazy Heart in 2008, the film was affiliated with the CMT network, yet drew my interest with a cast that included Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Robert Duval. All of these actors excel in roles steeped in the weathering of life and excess, and this tale of, “a washed-up, alcoholic country singer (Bridges) who gets his life back on track thanks to a reporter-type (Gyllenhaal),” obviously played to those strengths on the surface. The addition to the cast of Colin Farrell, forever in our good graces for In Bruges, made this a must-see no matter what.

Well, here we are in the fourth quarter of ‘09 and the performance by Bridges is in the thick of Oscar buzz, drawing early comparisons to Mickey Rourke’s unflinching, redemptive arc in The Wrestler. Furthering this parallel, Crazy Heart is being distributed by Fox Searchlight, the company behind Darren Aronofsky’s comeback favorite; they recently decided to give Heart a limited release next month to qualify for consideration by the Academy. A poster for the film is out and attached below.

Here is the updated synopsis: Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean, a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. Bad also becomes the mentor to a contemporary country star, Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell), while simultaneously struggling in the rising young crooner’s shadow.

Interestingly enough, Duval plays a character named Wayne Kramer, but the role is apparently unrelated to the same-named guitarist of the Mc5. Scott Cooper is making his directorial debut with the film and he also adapted the screenplay from an identically titled novel written in the ’80s by Thomas Cobb. Whoever chose the poster’s tagline, “The harder the life, the sweeter the song,” deserves a shot on the house for not botching the job with the kind of overly saccharine sentiment we’ve come to expect. And not only is the sun-swept golden color palette and shadowing reminiscent of the one sheet for The Wrestler, but the latter film’s tagline, “Love. Pain. Glory,” could probably substitute as well.

At this point in his career, it would take a serious misstep by Bridges not to accept him in a salt-of-the-earth, man’s-man role such as this. There aren’t a lot of great, non-metro actors left who are genuinely convincing and not polarizing in “heartland” material, and with Bridges lending vocal duties to the songs as well, the number decreases yet again. The title also reminds me of Bridges underrated performance as a struggling father on the fringe in American Heart. Country rock musician T Bone Burnett contributed original music and co-produced the project.

Also, I’m still curious to find out if the film was at all inspired by Duval’s role in 1983’s Tender Mercies as an, “alcoholic former country singer named Mac Sledge who makes friends with a young widow and her son. The friendship enables him to find inspiration to resume his career.” With less than a month before it’s theatrical roll-out, expect a trailer shortly. Fox Searchlight will release the film in select cities on December 16th.

Thanks for the great info Hunter! Any idea on the list of the selected cities? (I haven't googled it as I am a lazy Mexican).

You just made me laugh for the first time in 3 days. I know it was a laugh for the wrong reason, but I laughed anyway. Thank you, sir. Also, I haven't googled it because I'm a lazy American.

Looks interesting. Always liked Gyllenhaal, never understood why people were bitching about her in The Dark Knight.
  • She was certainly a step up from Katie Holmes. People were upset because they replaced a character, that generally doesn't go over very well. Despite the fact that Don Cheadle is infinitely better than Terrance Howard, I am sure he will get hit hard with the bitching as well in 6 months.
  • keesvd
Nah, nobody hates Cheadle. And Howard wasn't spectacular in Iron Man. But I guess that's your point exactly..
  • Exactly. People generally love Cheadle, and from what I have seen over the last year or two, consider him to be one of the best young, black actors in Hollywood (Him and Djimon Honsou seem to be tops, generally). And Howard was annoying at best in Iron Man. But Cheadle will get bitched about because he's not who we have been watching for the last 2 years on DVD.

i don't think that was why people were upset; i think that most people just didn't think poor maggie was attractive enough for the role. although she is a great actress, she DOES sorta look like a sad turtle.
  • You have a good point. She does look like she is about 15 years older than she really is. I still think it has more to do with the "people don't like change" factor than anything else, however.

Kind of reminds me of "Fat City", from the early 70's with Bridges as an up-and-coming boxer who is mentored by a has-been trying to reclaim his past glory. I love these kinds of honest character studies, and The Wrestler was my favourite film of 2008. I can't wait.
  • Re: Fat City. Nice comparison man, and an underrated film by Huston. Stacy Keach is one of my favorite actors. Check out The Ninth Configuration if you want a real head-trip.

Man...I can't wait to see this one. Thanks for the info!

Sounds like Oscar bait to me.
  • The Great Cambino
I'd watch Jeff Bridges read the phone book. Sign me up for this.
  • waqman
He looks kinda like Kris Kristofferson here.

Tender Mercies won 2 Oscars (Best Actor, Screenplay), so this movie is hopefully significantly different enough to warrant an Oscar nod. Then again, with 10 nominees for Best Picture this year, it's bound to make the cut.
  • Wow, I hadn't even heard of this film before and now it sits high on my 'must-see' list. O love when a film emerges from (seemingly) nowhere like this! Brilliant write-up, Hunter.
  • Very interesting. Makes me feel smart. Now the question is, are the actors who fill out the ballots smart enough to understand it?
  • famtaro
    very interesting
i like the poster too :)

I have deep respect for anyone who can divine the nature and quality of a movie from its poster. I am not that prescient.

I saw the trailer for the first time last night. I had several reactions. First, this movie is a must see, and second, I hope its not a ripoff of Tender Mercies. Today, I saw that the best actor in the last 35 years of cinema, Robert Duvall, has a major role in this movie, who, with hope, would not participate in a ripoff of his Oscar-winning film.

In any event, I'll echo the first blogger, where is this going to be opening. I'm halfway between Dallas and Houston, otherwise I'll have to get an airline ticket.

I saw Crazy Hearts last night and am ready to see it again. Happy to say the Jeff Bridges played Jeff Bridges - but never knew he could sing. Can't wait to buy the CD and listen to Jeff Bridges all day long; even Colin Farrel, who is not a favorite of mine, was great!!! I LOVED IT!!! Maggie was a perfect choice as well!!! Maybe he'll finally get the Oscar he has deserved 4 times before!!!
