Marvel Studios Starts Shooting Thor in January

thor_art

This is basically TweetNews confirming a plan that was mentioned in May. Last night, Production Weekly said over Twitter that Marvel Studios would begin shooting Thor in January. With Kenneth Branagh’s tale of the Norse thunder god on schedule and finally about to go before cameras, hopefully we’ll soon see some production design, costumes and other materials. Meanwhile, here’s a rundown of what we know so far.

Kenneth Branagh is directing Thor from a script by Mark Protosevich. (IMDB credits Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz with script work, and I would guess that Branagh has done some rewriting at this point, too.) The plot has been reported as such:

The movie’s story sees the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek) is Thor, Anthony Hopkins is his father Odin and Natalie Portman is Jane Foster, who in the comics is nurse to Thor’s human alter-ego Donald Blake. Tom Hiddleston is the villanous Loki, Jaimie Alexander is the Asgardian warrior Sif, and Colm Feore is a villain whose identity is being kept secret. Stellan Skarsgard is in the cast, too.

The Production Weekly tweet specifically says that production will begin in LA in mid-January, after which the film will move to Santa Fe, New Mexico in March, where it will remain until late April. Even if that’s not the end of principal photography, the studio will have a lot in the can by summer — enough to bring a reel to Comic Con, one would suppose.

  • Man, I really was hoping they would cast Alexandar Skarsgard as Thor.... mmmm *drool*
  • Same here. Still don't understand why they choose Chris Hemsworth. That guy hasn't even shown if he can act.
  • Guest
well we are going to see Chris Hemsworth in the new Red Dawn remake next year
  • Do you need to be able to 'act' to star in Thor? Hmmm, interesting.
  • So why are people like Nathalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins on board?
  • Well, they're not playing Thor, are they...
  • You said to star in Thor ...

So I'm guessing Iron Man and Hulk would have been the same if they'd been played by some unknown noob?

Dude yeah... it's a movie based on a comic book that at time has had some great writers on it so of course you need to act.

I Would Rather See Alexandar Skarsgard As Captain America.

This is the most intriguing superhero movie ... it has equal potential for camp and epic. I'm sure Branaugh will inch towards the latter!

Was never into Thor and the only time I seen him on screen was in a hulk tv movie. Thor and hulk running around L.A, hilarious! This movie sounds good and seems to have a decent cast but think it's gonna be a tough job mixing in Nordic gods and magic in a way that doesn't come off badly. However if anyone can do it, K.B can. The Mighty Thor!!

Keeping an eye on this one.

Think of it this way. If they can pull off the fantastical element realisticly, then that gives us reassurance that the Mandarin will be done well in Iron Man 3.
  • REAL6
And also he was in Adventures in Babysitting ;)
  • goldfarb
the Jane Foster character wasn't in the Protosevich script that's been floating around for the past while....that script is utter derivative shit BTW...we can only hope that it's been completely overhauled by Branagh.
  • Vegetax6
I wasn't aware that a Thor script was leaked, could you send it to me? Or direct me as to where i might find it? :D
  • goldfarb
    I /think/ I got it from ScriptShadow....
but it may also have been a torrent from somewhere...a solid Google should find it...

The movie sounds interesting if it were to stand alone. Eventually, Thor must exist in Iron Man's universe and I just don't see how that can happen. Iron Man was a great movie because it was grounded in reality. The suit has the possibility of existing in one form or another in the not so distant future. How do you go from that to God of Thunder?
  • nono
    its called imagination.
  • Azure Trayl
Has there been any mention who will actually play Donald Blake? I know it cant be Helmsworth. The comic even protrays two different type of people. I hope this process is also seen in the film.
  • Tetsuo_Man
The Ultimates had a really kickass concept for Thor. You never really knew if he was just insane or actually a norse god.
  • Did you read Vol. 2?
  • Tetsuo_Man
Yah, that whole thing with Loki and setting Thor up about how his hammer and vest were actually just handmade. I really dug that concept.
  • No i'm just asking because at the end you realized that Loki was just fucking with everybody. But using this as an element in the story of the movie would be an amazing idea.
  • greggorybasore
Yo Fat Tony, Iron Man was NOT grounded in reality. Seriously are you kidding me? It had realistic elements, but the suit that Tony Made in the cave was laughable. Actually it's the idea that he made the power source for it with spare parts for a missle he was supposed to be building that is unrealistic. Also that he was able to get that whole suit made without the terrorist seeing him make it was idiotic.

That said the movie was well written enough that it was easy to ignore.

Thor is less grounded in scientific reality than Iron Man. He is however grounded in a mystical reality. As for the question of how Thor plus Iron Man can exist in the same movie... have you ever read any marvel comics? They do that kind of stuff ALL THE FREAKING TIME! So long as the director does a good enough job of giving all 3 main actors screen time in the movie (Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr. and who ever plays Captain America) the rest will work out just fine.

didnti read somewhere that deniro and jude law were cast in this too?
was that shot down as bs?
  • RussFischer
We reported on that rumor when it cropped up, but to my knowledge it was never more than a rumor.
  • Damn, should be really good. I like the idea of it having a LOTR feel to it like D-MAN said.
I wander how it will tie into the Avengers. And remember what Jon Favreau said about wanting Iron Man staying in a realistic world. How will this movie affect that? But I'm trusting Marvel.
