There’s clearly some heavy auditioning going on down at the Spider-Man 4 big-shot hang out, with Sam Raimi reportedly turning over both Rachel McAdams and Romola Garai during his trawl for a potential female lead. What has been less clear, but I guess only marginally, is just what character the lucky lady to eventually be handed this key role will get to play.

According to new information, however, it would seem beyond doubt and now a dead cert that Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, is in. Better still, there’s some basic information about her story arc bubbling up…

I’ve verified with Hey U Guys that their sources are 100% legit, and am pleased to confirm that they’ve passed the sniff test easily. This is still just a rumour, sure - but it’s a very nice smelling one. Have a quote:

According to our friendly neighbourhood spider-source there are a number of actresses currently being considered for the role, but this at least confirms that Hardy is going to be in the film. We were also given a rough outline of the character’s story arc.

Their report goes on to tell us that the big screen Felicia Hardy is not the daughter of a cat burglar, as per the original, but that her old man is, for some of the film at least, the new man in charge of the Daily Bugle. This is presumably how she first meets Peter Parker, who she then goes on to fall in love with and discover the secret identity of - which will, as was inevitable, put both of them in danger. Jeez, Pete - can’t you just keep it in your pants mask?

Hardy’s father is not only a newsman but also reportedly a villain in some sense, though possibly not a costumed one. On the other hand, Hey U Guys tell us that their source were calling this chap a “viper”, over and over. It doesn’t really add up that they’ve confused “lizard” and “viper” but how about “vulture” and “viper”? There’s also an outside chance that the word was “venom” and there’s some cross-over between Spider-Man 4 and the touted Venom spin-off on the cards. Vulture seems most likely to me… or Hardy senior might just be a ticked off news man with no animal alias.

Here’s a little potential spoiler - the Hey U Guys story suggests that it’s the death of Felicia’s pop that provides the catalyst for her change of heart. Does Mr. Hardy die because an out-of-costume Peter feels he can’t act to save him? Again, that seems to be the strong implication but only time will tell. I definitely see the comments Raimi has made about needing a villain and a dilemma specific to Peter’s new circumstances marrying up very nicely with a plot line about Spider-Man’s need for a secret identity.

By the way… where do you think MJ will factor in all of this? Is Raimi really going to kill her off? Wow. Seems more likely by the day.

I’ll bet my house on the inclusion of the Black Cat and stack yours on the Vulture. Watch this space, because some interesting lines of inquiry are just starting to open up…

    Black Cat= a poor man's Catwoman.

Boo...We all know that Marvel and DC borrows ideas from each other.

I would love to see Black Cat in the next film!
  • Jim
Black Cat came out nearly ten years before Catwoman.
  • Dangeresquetoo
Catwoman ~ First appearance Batman #1 (Spring 1940)

Blackcat ~ First appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 (July 1979).
  • Bugaboo
Wrong. Just because she used a different costume doesn't mean she "came before her". That's ridiculous fanboy logic and should be struck from the Wikipedia entry you gleamed it from.
  • Rancorbait
Um, Catwoman came out in the 40's, Black Cat came out in the 70's.

That said, I'd much rather see Black Cat in a movie.
  • Jean
Black Cat is a poor man's Catwoman, but even poor men need a Catwoman.
  • Bob
Any villain but Venom, please for the love of god. anything that reminds me of Spider-Man 3=Bad.
  • Craigasorusrex
    The plot thickens.

Not sure what to make of the story details. Doesn't sound to fresh honestly. These love arcs are starting to get formulaic in this series.

Guess its still to early to really tell but still...
  • MickJ
Killing MJ is a start. Anything to get rid of Dunst.

Besides, these characters have had numerous story lines written about them in TV and comics. Nothing they come up with is going to be "fresh," and I really don't care if it's formulaic, it just needs to be done well. That sounds like a decent plot. But what happened to JJJ?
  • I thought they couldn't make anything fresh out of the Wolverine story line either, but if you saw that film it was painfully obvious that they strived to be 'fresh' enough to truly make a horrendous film with magical adamantium bullets that manage to black out Wolverine's memory some how.

Fan made Vulture Movie poster for spidey 4

    http://www.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/uplo...

But if you ask me. It seems like there doing the same thing that made a lot of ppl mad at number 3 witch is changing up the mythos os spiderman. Black cats dad at the daily bugle?? wtf? Him possibly being vulture? wtf??
  • we see the origins of characters changed all the time, I highly doubt that was the reason why people hated Spider-man 3.
  • exactly. People disliked Spidey 3 because they juggled nearly four villains with painful results.
  • moviefan
Interesting rumors, cant wait to we get offcial word. I said it before personally i want lizard and kraven as spider-man 4 villains. But black cat is a character i do like. Hopefully if she is in the film they wont change her or her father's backstory to much. As for the stuff about her dad above sounds interesting. But i will wait to see whats up for sure before i for or against what is planned.
  • Enthropii
Killing off Kristen Dunst would be a good thing.
  • [A]
Finally some news! And really good ones so far (even if it all ends up being just a rumour..)
  • Craigasorusrex
Why the hate for Dunst? I thought while not the best actress for MJ she is pretty attractive and her acting isn't to shabby either.

I think it has more to do with how the character was written rather than her performance.
  • Reese
My guess is Peter will probably still be broken up with Mary Jane as seen in the last movie. Unlike part 2 (which I loved) I've only seen it once, but I'm pretty sure they never really did get back together officially. There's no need to "off" her, but who knows.
  • True, MJ doesn't have to go, just make her a supporting character that's not so involved with Peter. I would rather see that than a needless death of a constant character like Mary Jane.
  • Tetsuo_Man
I think Raimi should strive AWAY from having just 2 or 3 major villains in the next film. Have a 10 minute opening chase sequence with the Shocker (he's like Spiderman's Vegeta... he's always there to take a good beating). The Spiderman films make it out to be that Spiderman just fights regular old crime most days of the week and every now and then he fights a supervillain, which is the opposite of the comics where he's usually fighting his small tier villains like Shocker, Scropion, and Rhino whenever there is a lull in an arc.

Also, they REALLY need to reevaluate their Peter Parker... where's the punny remarks??? Where's the geek, forever-a-teen, that we grew up with? Tobey's version is just sad... he's sad... and as much as Spiderman 2 was amazing, I just don't like watching a depressed Peter Parker who isn't cocky and sarcastic.
  • I think you might be watching too much "The Spectacular Spider-Man", but I do agree, he doesn't have that sarcastic edge that I love. Sure, he is always having things blow up in his face, but he usually beats on some lower-tiered baddies and cracks some jokes.
  • Ian Whitcombe
How can one watch TOO MUCH of "Spectacular Spider-Man?
  • RufusFirefly13
I want to see the Lizard being hunted by Kraven without MJ. Let her be some where else and just mentioned...leaving room for Felicia.
  • frug
Vulture wouldn't be bad bet given that Raimi supposedly brought in Ben Kingsley to read for the part before they had written the screenplay for Spidey 3. Also anyone want to take a guess what the budget for part 4 will be? The last one had a negative cost of $258 million so $300 million doesn't seem out of the question.
  • It's not out of the question but I think Sony wouldn't mind saving some money this time around. I would say $200 million's a safe bet for a budget.
  • Are we sure we're not already seeing a Black Cat spin off? Jeez, I guess Pete/Spidey just hangs out in this one and waits for some tail to swing by.
  • neverfearimhere
    There may actually be something to that whole 'viper' business;

In the Marvel Comics universe, believe it or not, there is a villian who goes by the name Viper. This particular villian is not well known, but has done battle with a certain individual, who shall remain nameless (*cough* it's Captain America, *cough* *cough). And seeing as how Spider-Man 4 is coming out 2 months before The First Avenger: Captain America, could there be some kind of a nod in Spider-Man 4 to that film and the Avengers film.

Of course, I could be wrong (and probably am).

Viper (Marvel Comics Villian) Wiki Page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viper_(Marvel_Comics)
  • I read the wiki about Viper and it doesn't sound like it would fit. It would be good to see more Marvel nods and crossovers but I doubt Sony would try this.

I'm thinking they want to make Felicia's dad a very powerful guy, possibly the guy who helps the daily bugle during the tough recession, with his tons of money. Probably pisses someone off during his "viper" like ways and gets himself killed with the helpless Felicia watching.
  • neverfearimhere
You have a point. My guess, then, is that Felicia Hardy's dad may fill the Dexter Bennett role. In the comics (at least the current ones), a man named Dexter Bennett takes over The Daily Bugle when Jameson has a near-fatal heart attack. Remember the pills from Spider-Man 3?

So Jameson has his heart attack, and Felicia's Dad (re: Dexter Bennett) takes over. I still don't know about the whole 'viper' thing, but since you read the wiki, then you know that 1) Viper was a villian and 2) that he was killed.
  • montimer
    I doubt it.

The character is linked to Captain America, therefore, the rights will almost certainly still be with Marvel, and while I'd love to see Sony play ball and let Spidey be part of the Marvel-verse, it's really unlikely that it'll happen.
  • Golgo 13
Don't like where the new story for Spidey 4 is going one bit. Enough of the love triangle already. The 3rd one had that and it sucked the life outta the movie. No way The Vulture will be in this flick. He's about as appealing as Kirsten Dunst is as MJ.
  • neverfearimhere
Since it's gonna feature Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, I wonder how they'll handle the whole "I-like-you-as-Spider-Man-but-not-as-Peter-Parker" thing", if at all.

Then again; tight clothing and role-playing. Me-ow!
  • moviefan
Yea even though i though dunst was ok for mj, was a miscast for the role. I personally wouldnt like to see the character killed off. Maybe they can say mj and peter are friends right now. But decided to break off relationship for the time being. To they both get their heads in the right place. Then say maybe mj decided to move to LA to work on her theater/acting work or more modeling jobs. So that is why she could be gone for a majority of the film.

as for felica, and her father. I personally dont see why they need to go around and muck up the back story for them. I do like the ideal of maybe making her dad simular to dexter bennett of the current ASM comics run. But say he was a cat burglar and hide away the money he stoled for years. Then He buys out the bugle. Then maybe someone he pissed off during his crime days comes and kills him. Then Felica decides to take the mantle of the black cat in honnor of her dad, and maybe add in the bad luck charm powers for her. That would be ok for me.

I dont want to see her father turned into some random made up villain, or mucking around with backstory of another villain like vulture or someone else. I would think raimi who is the fan of the comics wouldnt want to mess around with this this time around. Since we know last time he was forced into adding venom and changing things in the script.

Though he did say things are different this time and he has more say in things now. So i hope he make the right decisions this time. Though i will wait to we know for sure what is happening. Before i am for or against these ideas.
  • maherjimmy
Lizard is and was a tough adversary for Spider-Man so this could make sense in the same way Harry came back to help peter in the 3rd movie. OF course this is only one villain and that plot line has already been done but with the screw up of the 3rd, I really hope they let Raimi do what he wants and producers can buy out.

I hear a lot of complaints about Felicia Hardy and the impending love triangle. This could actually add to the movie if it's not handled the in a Spiderman 3 fashion. Felicia understands the perils of Parker's life as a masked hero in a way MJ never will. As MJ pulls Peter in the direction of student/boyfriend, Blackcat pull Spiderman in the direction of hero/adventure. All the while, Lizard is presenting his own set of problems having Peter choose between stopping this over powered destructive force while holding back to save his mentor.

One theme that has been clear in Raimi's vision of Spiderman is that Peter has had to make "the tough choices". It only seems logical to have these kinds of dynamics take place here. Then again, I always thought Venom was a "mess-up proof" villian. So....

    http://marvel.com/universe/Viper

Sounds like they might be casting for a female Viper. Reading through the character profile, it all seems pretty relevant. I'd say this is the villain for Spiderman 4.
  • meddows
I'm all for removing MJ, but killing her off is useless. That's the gimmick behavior of a poor creator... kind of like shoe-horning Uncle Ben into every film. Cat's father was a criminal, but a blue collar crook. I guess its not PC enough to let it stay that way. He has to be a corporate villain.
  • Mike Lawson
I'm so sick with them ruining the mythology of these characters. I understand one must adapt the story of a comic book to film and by doing so, tweak the story here and there so it may become Hollywood mainstream but after the train wreck Spider-Man 3 was, why don't they just stick to the mythos. J Jonah Jameson has and always will be the editor of the Daily Bugle. Black Cat's father was a cat burglar, hence why she took on the name Black Cat. I love Spider-Man, but I am already beginning to hate this film just from what has already been leaked. This franchise has just become absolute bull****. I thought Raimi was a fan of the character, but obviously not.
  • Mike Lawson
and once again Black cat's father, the vulture? that just pisses me off. if that is the case, I sware to god I will not see this movie. I used to intern at Marvel, had a free screening for Wolverine: Origins and passed it up because I had heard what they did to Beak and Deadpool and couldn't bare to see some of my favorite characters ruined for the big screen by Hollwyood. I am protesting Spider-Man 4 as of now. I fuckin hate writers, producers, and directors sometimes.
  • Mike Lawson
A simple buck is all Hollywood cares about these days and while I understand the need to make money in this economy, there is a way in which art and story can still strive over the money making remake and poor stories machine Hollywood has manifested.
  • If the Vulture is going to be in Spidey 4, at least make sure it's Ben Kingsley in the role!
  • riggs
i just want them to get rid of dunce (misspelled on purpose)

"Does Mr. Hardy die because an out-of-costume Peter feels he can’t act to save him? Again, that seems to be the strong implication."

"Is Raimi really going to kill her off? Wow. Seems more likely by the day."

how and where are these 'obvious implications' arising from?! it's sure as shit not this article, so PLEASE point me in the direction of the places that have led you to these conclusions brendon, i am dying to know everything about this film!!!
  • giant-size man-thing
Really wish this was going to be a Lizard/Kraven story, but who knows at this point...
  • feiliciaday
i should be the prowler. or solo. or even dr.doom. she's the coolerst
  • Eliza Dushku for the Black Cat. Has to be!
  • bray
they could make felicia's dad chameleon, the vulture idea for her dad sounds stupid, like seriously ever hear anyone say my favorite villain is vulture? they could also use some of the idea's from web of shadows (new sm game) that plot was prretty good. and they did'nt get in depth enough about the black suit or venom, i don,t think they should bring carnage into the picture just now bring him in in sm 5.
  • bray
your kiddin' right? dr.doom? then they would have to bring the new avenger s into the the picture, an last time i checked this was SM5 not "the new avengers the movie"
