oldboy spielberg

Could it be? Have our prayer’s been answered? Latino Review is reporting that Steven Spielberg’s Old Boy starring Will Smith is dead in the water. Apparently Dreamworks and original Korean production studio Mandate were working together to get the rights to the manga, but the two couldn’t reach an agreement, and Dreamworks simply walked away. Spielberg’s film was to be an adaptation of the original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, and not a direct remake of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy.

I honestly loathed this project a lot less when we learned that they were looking at the manga more than the film, but at the same time it would have been impossible not to compare Spielberg’s vision to Park’s. Had Spielberg tapped a more compelling actor for the role, I probably would have even been excited for this project. It’d be like Scorsese remaking Infernal Affairs as The Departed—it’s sometimes fascinating to see how Hollywood masters tackle the same material as foreign directors.

Since Mandate couldn’t agree on terms with two huge Hollywood names behind the project, I’m not sure if we’ll see anyone else attempting to do another American Oldboy project anytime soon. Then again, if it was just about Dreamworks wanting more of the pie than Mandate could tolerate, perhaps a smaller studio with less clout would actually be more agreeable for Mandate.

With Old Boy out, I wonder what Spielberg will be spending his time on next. His next listed project on IMDB is Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, but that has a depressingly distant release date of December 23, 2011. Perhaps Christmas will come early and we’ll see it even sooner?

Discuss: Were you looking forward to Spielberg’s Old Boy, or are you glad that it’s dead?

I'm pretty glad this didn't get made. I still want Spielberg's Lincoln flick.
  • JoshB
I'd like to go on record as saying, YIPPIE!!! A great film survives to see another day, without suffering a horrible watered down American remake.
  • filmkid
it was not going to be remake of Park Chan-wook version of Oldboy it was going to be a adapting the manga version of Oldboy. how this movie going to be horrible it was going to be directed by Steven Spielberg the man who directed Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones, Empire of the Sun, Schindler's List, Amistad, etc.

dont get it twisted that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith is not doing Oldboy. American version of Oldboy is going to happen sooner or later. you forget that Justin Lin was linked to direct Oldboy the same direct who done The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious.
  • Slatters
As poorly worded (and spelled) as filmkid's comment is, I have to agree with him. The film wasn't going to be a remake of the movie, and even it was, who cares?

As terrible as a remake might end up being, it takes nothing away from the original, so you can still wax intellectual with your buddies about the obscure and "brilliant" Korean film that only you guys know about.

Look at Hollywood right now, its a glutton of remakes, sequels, reimaginings, etc. its only going to be a matter of time before it happens. I can imagine alot less capable director's then Steven Spielberg being helmed to adapt something like this, and it looks like thats going to be the case eventually.
  • filmkid
the remakes that always end up been bad are horror remakes and 80s movie remakes. foreign movie remakes always end up been good.
  • Craigasorusrex
    YAY!!!!

    Good riddance.
  • this is excellent news.

    huraay! i'm so happy!

mind you, I love Spielberg (though he's been a hit and miss as of late) and by no means, I'm trying to dig at him. (drinks wine)
  • Nice.
Hollywood: Remakes, Sequels and Adaptations No more (?)
  • lodaa
Yesssssssssss, Hollywood has never done this until recently. I mean, look at old Hollywood, no adaptations, sequels or remakes there..... Dracula, Frankenstein, A Star is Born, It's a Wonderful Life, The Thin Man series, THe Road movies, Sherlock Holmes, Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, Greatest Story ever told, do I need to go into Broadway adaptations?? I could go on and on and on and on, take rest then go on some more. The "Hollywood only does sequels and remakes anymore" holds no weight. Look into film history. And don't get me started with the "too much CG" argument.
  • lonestar
what a dumb comment, i bet you like The Dark Knight guess what that is a sequel to Batman Begins, i bet you like True Lies oh wait thats a remake, i bet your is dumb cause it is.
  • Never seen True Lies. Unless you mean the French movie. If so, then I have.

The Dark Knight is over rated.
i bet your is dum 2 cause it is

"Had Spielberg tapped a more compelling actor for the role, I probably would have even been excited for this project."

I don't understand why people are so prejudiced against Will Smith.
Will Smith IS a compelling actor in Ali, in Pursuit of Happyness, and even in I am Legend.
Yes, he has never had the chance to be in a truly great film, but even in the above flawed films, he was able to give impressive performances. What he needs is just a great director, a great script. It seems that you people are using completely different criteria when it comes to Will - if other actors want to try some new types of roles, they should be commended, should be encouraged; but when Will wants to try a different type of role, he will definitely do badly, and will "ruin the movie". But of course, if he takes the same types of roles, he is also committing the crime of repeating himself. Whatever he does, it must be wrong. And whatever good performances he has given before, they do not count.
  • Octoberist
i really think that Will is a good actor, but I think he hides his range with his humor.

For example, he was good in I am Legend, but anytime he has a humorous scene in the movie, he goes back to the Will Smith that we all know (Fresh Prince, Men in Black) that it becomes distracting for me to take him seriously. Maybe it's just me.
  • mace
nothing wrong with him having humor scenes in I am Legend it make sense you cant have a character to be freaking serious all the time. look what happen with Christain Bale when his always serious on film.
  • Octoberist
    no, you're misunderstood me. :)

I love humor. Empire Strikes Back was the darkest Star Wars but it was also teh funniest.

Anyway, I'm talking about Will's acting. When he does a dramatic role, he's fine. When he cracks a joke, then he slips into his 'Will Smith that we all know from Fresh Prince, Men in Black and Bad Boys" mode. It's nothing that he can do about, and many might think Im crazy.
  • Not saying Smith can't be good sometimes, but the lead role requires a sort of intensity that I've yet to see him successfully perform. There are also much better actors for that role that I can think of--but I guess none as bankable.
  • riggs
i agree with you, will smith is one of the top actors in hollywood which is why he always brings in the big bucks. his performance in ALI and pursuit of happyness shouldve made all of the haters stfu, but oh well.

Anytime you think there's hope, just look at Roy Lee's imdb...and cry:

  • oh the humanity
Nothing there a horrible accident involving a time machine and a tractor trailer full of biochemical agents couldn't fix. Then again that'll pretty much fix anything.

Thank god, i can breath again now ;-)
  • B Dawk
Man. What is wrong with you people? If this did get made, it wouldn't take anything away from the original. And truth be told this will get made eventually. And just remember b/f Spielburg was trying to make this, Justin Lin the director of Fast and Furious and Fast and Furious Tokoyo Drift was trying direct the project. So you might be rejoicing now that Spielburg the man who made Shinlder's List, Munich, The Indiana Jones Trilogy, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Catch me if You can, Minority Report, Jurrassic Park, Close Encounters etc... isn't making this film. But the grass is not always greener on the other side.
  • Alkaiser
OldBoy is such a fantastic film I don't know how i would feel about a adaptation of it. And plus since they took out the octopus scene and the incest whats left lol?
  • Isn't Tintin in post production now? Why would we see it sooner just because Oldboy is dead?
  • robb3d
I don't mind remakes, but I mind Smith and Spielberg wasting time retelling an already well told tale.
  • dan
the remake was going to be on the manga not the film. Park Chan-wook Oldboy was loosely based on the Japanese manga.
  • TheTrebor
I'm so glad it's dead! They should leave such an awesome movie alone!
  • luke
some people are just dumb you guys should be upset cause Justin Lin could come back and do this movie. two major stars Steven Spielberg and Will Smith was interested to do this movie now we might get a bad director and even bad actor to star in a American version of Oldboy.

look how many foreign films and foreign novels that been remade that people liked or never effected the originals i.e.
    - True Lies (remake of the 1991 French movie La Totale!)
    - 12 Monkeys (inspired by the French short film La Jetée)
    - The Magnificent Seven (remake of Seven Samurai)
    - The Man with One Red Shoe (remake of French film Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire)
    etc
  • lodaa
Thank you!!! THe so called "film lovers" on this site should actually study some film history.
  • ding dong!!! the project is at last long DEAD!!!
  • Saying Will Smith isn't "compelling" is a very poor choice of words. Will Smith is the definition of compelling. You want to watch him. He's the only movie star left in the world who's still a reliable draw across genres. I was excited to see what he'd do with something as harrowing as Oldboy.

People get all weird about remakes. If Spielberg and Smith had made this, it's not like they would've scoured the globe for all copies of the original and burned them. They're still there, untouched, ready for you to watch again whenever you want.
  • Hector Mann
Spielberg is an overrated hack, an intellectually dishonest man-child, who does not deserve to be anywhere near this materal.
  • riggs
get the fuck off your high horse.
  • Octoberist
thanks for trolling. yes you are trolling because you'll know the reaction you're gonna get. baiting, is the word.
  • Octoberist
It's not like Will Smith is a bad actor, but no, he's not the definition of the word 'compelling'. That's being too melodramatic, Micheal dance.
  • alexkies
    Oh thank god.
  • starscream9289
    You ARE up there!
  • Space
I think David Fincher is just the man for this movie..
  • Jada Fett
I do not have a problem with Remaking foreign films for an American Audience. In fact some people may discover the foreign film b/c of the American Remake. Also Foreign filmmakers remake american films all the time. Let's not a forgot one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history owes his career to a remake. Clint Eastwood wouldn't have been Clint Eastwood if he didn't star in Sergio Leone's unauthorized remake of Akira Kursowa's Yojimbo. If fanboys were around then you probably would have been up in arms about that too.
  • AdventCiervo
Thank god. Waiting any day for that Karate Kid remake to die, the original is so outdated...
  • Bigzilla
Christmas come early? Tin-Tin couldn't sound more uninteresting. It's a waste of both his and Peter Jackson's talents and time. Maybe Christmas will come early and Spielberg will make a movie based on an ORIGINAL SCRIPT.
  • Slatters
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for anything "original" from anyone anytime soon.
  • I am glad
  • Vic
THIS IS DIVINE INTERVENTION I'M TELLIN YA !!!! I'VE BEEN PRAYING FOR THIS DAY ! THANK YOU GOD, THIS IS INCREDIBLE !
