Yes, you read that right, so stop rubbing your eyes and tell me - wouldn’t you do the same thing if you were him?

Despite a pretty solid ring of secrecy around the production, we know that Del Toro and team are deep into the development of their Hobbit movies. So far they’ve seemingly finished one screenplay and several creature designs, have hired Guillermo Navarro to shoot the film and have apparently come a long way in scheduling the production. On the showbizzier side of things, there’s been some casting information escape from their closed, but not a great deal, and aside from the as-expected return of Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkiss, the only juice we’ve had so announced far is a vague promise of something for Doug Jones in the movie. Nothing on the new roles at all, much less Bilbo himself.

After the break, the details of Del Toro’s beastly turn as well as more on his plans for Smaug, the Wargs, the Great Goblin and the rest of the monsters.

Speaking in an interview on German television, Del Toro said the creature he will play himself is “not an important one, just a background guy”. You can see the full interview, which is otherwise largely about Del Toro’s novel The Strain, at the bottom of the post.

These teasing comments were then discussed on the One Ring messageboards, where Del Toro stopped by to confirm the news. Here’s what he spilled:

I had a hand on the design of the creature and I will personally sculpt the appliances that will be applied on my face and hands. I used to sculpt the creatures for NECROPIA (my FX company) and I miss it a bit. I will have a line or two and die quickly.

So, Tolkienheads, tell me: any idea what kind of creature he might be playing? I’m guessing a Warg…?

Del Toro has discussed his overall vision for the monsters of the movie with Total Film. Here’s a choice quote or two:

In The Hobbit, the creatures speak: Smaug has beautiful lines of dialogue; the Great Goblin has beautiful lines of dialogue; many creatures do. So we had to design them with a different approach because you are not just designing things that are scary. I also wanted some of the monsters in The Hobbit to be majestic. I wanted the Wargs to have a certain beauty so that you don’t have a massively clear definition: what is beautiful is good and what is ugly is not. Some of the monsters are absolutely gorgeous.

Early in production I came up with a very strong idea that would separate Smaug from every other dragon ever made. The problem was implementing that idea. But I think we’ve nailed it.

Another rumour, also from The One Ring, is that the first six months of shooting on the film will take place in the studio, as opposed to out on location. If true, this probably has some foundation in practical concerns, but it might just be motivated by an attempt to keep as much as possible of the look and casting of the film under wraps for as long as possible. Are we in for a long, tantalising and slow tease of a reveal for this film?

I understand that "they" want to keep some continuity between the Hobbit and LOTR, but I really wish they would let Doug Jones play Gollum. Let's see something other than Mo-Capped Andy Serkis. They should use a creature design that is somewhere between Gollum and Smeagol (similar to the flashbacks in Jackson's version) and shrink him down a bit with CG. I just love the real feel Jones' characters have.
  • Doug Jones is great. I've loved him in everything I've seen him in. That being said, they would be idiotic not to use Serkis. Serkis was almost nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal. Serkis as Gollum is the single greatest CGI performance to date.

Don't fix something that isn't broken. Serkis is great as Gollum. Jones would be great, too, I think. But why risk him not being able to match Serkis's performance and possibly ruining those 30-40 minutes of the film(s)?
  • freemachine
Don't fix something that isn't broken? Then Peter Jackson should get off his ass and direct the movies himself. I'd love that. Otherwise let Del Toro weave some magic with his most powerful weapon, Doug Jones.

In an unrelated note: The Broncos can suck it (28-10)!
  • MickJ
Love Doug Jones as well but have to agree with the continuity for actors when possible. Can't just leave Serkis in the cold, especially when he did a great job. Jones will probably find a role in here somewhere anyway.
  • Octoberist
you're making it as if Del Toro is 'restricted' or something. And I'm sure he too would like to keep Serkis as Gollum too.

Sorry, I just don't see your point, and I agree with Josh here: If it's not broken why fix it?
  • Octoberist
I'm sorry. Why use Jones for Gollum? this is beyond me.
  • freemachine
Oh well, I'm clearly in the minority here. I would just like to see a new interpretation of Middle Earth; one that is UNIQUE from Jackson's.
  • Octoberist
I'm sure that Del Toro can do it in other ways. The Hobbit is already different enough from the Lord of the Rings books, and plus, Del Toro is working with a lot of his crew from his past movies (like his cinematographer, etc)

What you're saying is like saying that Irvin Kershner should have hired a different voice actor for Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back. ha
  • Gil Brooks
FYI- The Wargs are wolves, so it won't be that.
  • Swarley
I don't know, I think Del Torro would look pretty cool with a saddle on and a rider on his back.
  • BrendonConnelly
    Might they not be semi-anthropomorphised?
  • I'd guess he'll be playing one of the 3 trolls, some sort of orc commander, or maybe one of those half bear half men that show up near the end of the book.

There's plenty of creatures in The Hobbit, but I can't think of many that face prosthetics would be needed for. I'm thinking spiders, wargs, eagles. I don't see a human doing any physical performance for any of those creatures though. Most likely they'll be CGI (or in del Toro's case a mixture of cg and practical).
  • RufusFirefly13
Agreed...has to be one of the trolls.

I really want to go back and read the books again as well as watch the animated and Jackson's LOTR movies...thanks to all these recent updates about the Hobbit.
  • He said that he would die quickly and only have a line or two. Unless they drastically changed that scene, that doesn't fit the 3 trolls. They last an entire night in the story before dying and each has quite a bit of dialogue if I remember correctly (been a few years since I read it, forgive me if I am wrong)
  • Allm0st
Lol a Warg? Did you even see or read LotR? My best guess is a troll "a few lines but die quickly" either way sure as hell won't be a Warg.
  • lukecart
The wargs can talk in the hobbit just to let you know...
  • freemachine
Exactly. Del Toro also said, "...appliances that will be applied on my face and hands..." Wargs need to be large enough to ride, so a few prosthetics wouldn't get the job done...also, the Wargs will likely be CGI, just like in Jackson's films.
  • Allm0st
Yeah I read The Hobbit and never said they couldn't talk, but seriously a Warg? A troll is more fitting. Though only Del Toro knows what he's going to play right now. Just as I didn't think Inception was a cover title for Batman 3 I don't think Del Toro will play a Warg.
The reaosn I said troll is he will obviously need appliances on his face, and then his hands would need to be bigger as well. Then you have the face he said a few lines then dies quickly. The Trolls have a few lines an then turn to stone when the sun comes up, this was due to arguing for so long over how they were going to cook and eat their meal. And it's unlikely they make men run around in makeup so they have a Warg. It just seems unlikely when Lord of the Rings had them in CGI and that was what roughly six or seven years ago?
Then again he could be one of the Bear men towards the end, but I highly doubt a Warg. The idea of a man playing a Warg is quite odd, then again it we mostly expected Gollum to be CGI and voice over, but we got motion capture as well as CGI and "rotoanimation". But as I said saying he will play a Warg is kind of silly.
  • xorith
    hahaha ,isnt it obvious?

hes going to be Beorn the bear! lol, he looks like one.

probably a troll though (or maybe an orc champion? like the one at the lonely mtn)

i actually am anticipating this A LOT, i love how he sees what Jackson did not, that the bad guys should not just be slimy sneering retarded monsters, that he wants to blur the line between monster and something more
  • One of those walking trees. Walking. Journey. Adventure. Is there more walking in Hobbit?
  • MickJ
Quite a bit. Some sneaking around and running are squeezed in there too.
  • Swarley
    And also some barrels.
  • Jason
I'm really hoping Del Toro's role comes in the form of one of the Eagles that rescues Gandalf, Bilbo, and the dwarves from the goblins and Wargs.
  • keesvd
I hope he doesn't try to be a hobbit, he's way too eeerr..., big, for that.
  • freemachine
First, he's only 5'6". Second, he's lost a lot of weight...a scary amount of weight. He's almost unrecognizable these days.
  • Justin
Whatever he is, I hope it's not distracting. I don't want to be immediately able to spot that it's Guillermo Del Toro. That would be pull me right out of the movie for those few lines of dialogue.

I'm fine with little personal touches here and there, but it has to be done gracefully.

I like Guillermo Del Toro just fine, but his accent isn't really fitting with Middle Earth, and I have no idea how he is at doing British accents. The more I think about it, the more this idea annoys me.

And no, I wouldn't give myself a role in ANY movie, Hobbit or not. I'm far too self-conscious to be able to act.
  • keef
i just hope the hobit doesnt look like Pans Labrinth or Hellboy 2.
    Most likely it will...
    sigh.
