clueless

As far as filmographies go, Amy Heckerling has a weighty selection of hits among her misses. In addition to the fantastic Clueless, she also gave us Fast Times at Ridgemont High, European Vacation, and the first two Look Who’s Talking movies. While the quality of the latter two films is debatable, at least they made money, which is more than you can see for her recent string of films which include The Loser, and the direct-to-DVD I Can Never Be Your Woman (which /Filmcast guest Richard Kelly quite liked).

We’ve now caught wind of her latest project, and it’s quite honestly the last thing I want to see right now: A vampire romantic comedy, entitled Vamps. Apparently, it will “be a modern-day tale of two young female vampires living the good life in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardise their immortality.” Yup.

The only known cast member so far is Krysten Ritter (Confessions of a Shopaholic, Veronica Mars, Breaking Bad), as one of the female vamps. I’m somewhat hoping that the project is something Heckerling has had in mind for some time now, but most likely it’s just a last-grab attempt at making a film with bank. After all, nothing is hotter than vampires right now, and judging from the description it sounds like she’s basically written a vampire-themed version of Gossip Girls. Needless to say, there is a core demographic that already loves this film something unhealthy.

Then again, there’s also a good chance that Heckerling is working something subversive here similar to Clueless, or more recently, Mean Girls. For now, I’m going to hold on to that last straw of hope for all it’s worth.

y'know, for a while i've wanted to see Christopher Moore's book "Bloodsucking Friends" get the movie treatment. but now i kinda don't wanna see it get lost in the fad. or any moore book for that matter would be cool. oh well.
  • A romantic vampire comedy... what a great idea, I wonder why no ones thought of doing that before? *sarcasm*

    As if!
  • but it's Amy Heckerling! I actually am excited for this, she's probably going to make this different... maybe she'll poke fun at Twilight crap!!!

You know, a Vampire RomCom isn't a terrible idea. If it's half as good and smart as Clueless was, then it will at least be mile ahead of Twilight in quality. Then again, Uwe Boll movies are better than Twilight, so make of that what you will.

You know devindra it all comes down to the time we live in. If this was a project that heckerling announced she was going to make back in the 80's then it would be a good thing. It probably would have even worked in the 90's when stuff like buffy came out and heckerling reached her writing peak with clueless. Now that were in the double 00's I cant help but see this becoming a movie like "My Super Ex Girlfriend", a movie by a director once considered pop culture genius (reitman) who has deteriorated into using tired tropes who is no longer relevant and has been anestized by the system.

By the way you forgot to mention Johnny Dangerously which ranks with the best of the Zuker movies

I read the script about a year and a half ago and it's really not very good. At the time they were hoping for Leighton Meester and Emma Stone to play the two young vamps. The draft I read suffered from a paper-thin plot and a complete lack of understanding of structure.
