battleship

I was trying to remain positive about this upcoming Battleship movie because I think director Peter Berg has the potential to be great, but he’s making it really hard for me right now. Latino Review got the scoop a few days ago that the big bad in Battleship won’t be Nazis, reverse vampires, or ominous looking pegs. Instead, it’s aliens.

With this news I’m getting the sinking feeling that we’re not getting the promising Peter Berg who gave us The Rundown, The Kingdom, and helped bring the fantastic Friday Night Lights to television—instead, I’m envisioning the guy who gave us Hancock. That the film is coming from the brother writing team Jon and Erich Hoeber, they who gave us Whiteout, is no more heartening.

Then again, I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised. What we’re getting is a film adaptation of a Hasbro board game, and just like this year’s G.I. Joe, we can probably expect it to be big, dumb, and stupid. Except this time around there won’t be a veil of nostalgia surrounding the “characters” (unless someone is really fond of their Destroyer) to make the suck apparent.

What’s most depressing is that Berg recently left his very promising Dune adaptation due to his crazy amount of  upcoming projects. It makes sense for him to give up on Dune rather than Battleship because the latter will be a quick and dirty film, and it won’t have the burden of a giant budget, or the problem of figuring out how to get audiences interested in a dense piece of science fiction.

Instead, we get to see boats go boom. Fighting aliens. Brought to you by Hasbro.

  • Personally, the whole idea of making a film version of a boardgame is a bit lame. What's next, a Monopoly film?
  • Are you being sarcastic? :P If not, have a seat... http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/11/12/worst-idea-...

I was recently reminded by AMC that this movie already exists.
  • Why even call this battleship? I dont think battleship had a story or characters, so why base a movie on it. It may even get better reception if they said its an alien movie set in the ocean on battleships

what is up with Peter Berg? I mean, who knows, Battleship might be decent but where is Berg going with his career?

"Boats go boom," "fighting aliens," and "brought to you by Hasbro" are the three phrases that basically ensure my purchase of a ticket.
  • Unless the bad guys are ominous looking pegs I don't see how this is going to work.

Don't let the 'berg sink that ship!

Sorry, something within me made me say it. Speaking of Berg, he lets producers push him around. However, this just might be his swan song or hopefully his odd way of bringing in the reigns. My awefully awesome 8-ball is not so optimistic. (might be a repost)

I'm just cracking up at the woman washing up in the kitchen in the background on the battleship box.
    Ahhhh good old fashioned sexism.

So what next? Will the battleships be in space?
