Avatar

During the World Series a new ad spot for Avatar popped up on television, and I think if this had been the first thing people saw for the film they would have been all over it. Because this is a spot cut to look like an ad for Terminator 2 or Aliens. It’s all killer, no filler — power suits, alien beasts, combat, angry men and plenty of big blue cats, but none of their feelings. Check it out after the break.

This comes on the heels of a report that says the full-length theatrical trailer boosted Avatar’s online views by 418%. Which is a confusing number, as reported by Variety, that doesn’t really tell us much about whether more people really know more about the film now. But it does suggest that the whole Avatar Day thing was really a big waste of money, which a lot of us had already suspected, having attended half-full ’screenings’.

So, after all the noise about needing a new way to sell this movie, it’s the regular old theatrical trailer that starts to change awareness of the film. And now this TV spot can’t hurt, because it is so simple, so stripped down, and possibly so tailored to skirt around all the romantic angles of the movie. It’s ironic that this is probably the most mainstream bit of promotion that Fox has come up with yet for the film, given that the romance is what kept people coming back to Titanic. I’m quite curious to see how people respond to the film in December; Titanic might have just been exactly the right thing and the right time to capture a phenomenal audience.

Also, under the TV spot embed, we’ve got the international Avatar trailer and the very silly little Coke Zero commercial that has a bit of new footage. Excepting all the CGI-heavy effects, the Coke commercial looks like it was made around the time Cameron last directed a non-documentary feature film. So it’s fairly amusing in that sense, but not much use otherwise.

Any estimate on how much it's going to cost to promote this film? 100 mil?
  • RussFischer
I'd guess more than that worldwide, but I don't have a reliable figure.
  • They need to start spending like crazy. It's 6 weeks away and still very few people outside the film news followers have heard of it. It's nice to see these ads tho, it looks like they're on the right track.

the graphic design for this movie is horrible. blue gradients? is that papyrus for the title? couldn't they divert a few dollars from the millions in the budget for a graphic designer who knows his stuff?
  • ajg1993
    Nitpicking bear is nitpicking.
  • bonchampion
    lol
    no. artist bear is nitpicking
  • starscream9289
But how can a bear know about graphic design?
  • Square
When my buddy and I, both designers, saw this trailer for the first time, all we could think was "Papyrus, Papyrus, Papyrus..."
  • sharhem
    lol me too!!
  • Papyrus with a f*cking Photoshop-styled Emboss, no less. It's horrid!!
  • As a note, it's the same graphics they used for "Titanic."
Same font, same gradient, same colours.

Guess they're relying on subconscious relations?

I'd like to see you do better.

Oh man, i love how in that very topmost trailer that giant animal the guy is riding is SO involved and in the zone to attack that soldier.

Did anyone else see the trailer cut together with the baseball footage to introduce game 4? It defined awful.
  • No but I wish I did. That sounds like one of the worst ad ideas ever hahaha

I can picture it in my mind. Splicing together home run hit footage with avatar battle images to show the power of the slugging or something. Groan.
  • I LOOOVE Giorgio Moroder.
  • starscream9289
I gotta say, after watching the trailer in 1080p I am definitely excited for this movie.
  • Is it just me or are they forgetting to mention that the MOVIE IS IN 3-D!?!?!?!?
  • You'd be amazed how many people roll their eyes at the 3D sales pitch. I certainly plan on seeing AVATAR on a 2D screen, just to see how it plays - you know - as a FILM.
  • waqman
Definitely can't wait for this film.

The more I see the cooler it looks

Papyrus is right. Check out the image I just photoshopped below. The logo on top is the actual logo and the one below is just Papyrus with a blue outer glow. All they did was extend part of the "A" and the "R".

  • I think it looks like a lot of fun.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie.

It´s true that Avatar Day was a waste of money, but only because it was so early. No one knew about that event. No one had seen an ad for Avatar Day! If they had planned and executed it now in early november after having showed all the killer trailers (not showing the underwhelming teaser at all), that same day would have been a huge success. Actually it´s not too late. They could cut together another 15 minutes of new footage, or why not just show the comic con footage to audiences now that they are much more aware of Avatar than they ever were in September.

A few words about the footage released so far: It´s truly now that I understand why all directors who had seen parts of Avatar were proclaiming it was the next big thing, game changer etc... The set pieces shown in the trailer, internet featurette and tv spots hint at amazing stuff. The chase set pieces, war scenes and otherworldly vistas look like they are on the same level as Lord of the rings and star wars movies combined.

I was fortunate enough to see the Avatar footage twice. I was blown away by the 3d, but more importand than the 3d itself was the high res quality of the digital projection. It looked like the movies i watch on on my HD TV. Crystal clear and no traditional cinema 35mm grain at all. The cgi looked awesome and once Jake is running around in the jungle you are totally immersed as a viewer. I agree with those who say that some of the Pandora jungle scenes have an animated quality to them and that they don´t look photoreal, but in the end what mattered to me was how REAL it looked after all. It looked real in the context of the world that JC and his artists had created.

That realness came from the performance capture of the actors and from the virtual camera work. Best example of the camera in action was the banshee scene when jake had to tame his own banshee. In the spots the best example that showed the virtual camera was the thanator running scene and the scarlet and yellow leonopteryx flying through the jungle, chasing the two smaller banshees. There is real weight and motion to those creatures. Another example would be Neyteri using her bow. It looked like a real human firing a bow. Not for one second you get the feeling it´s cgi.

Avatar Day in the UK was a success, with all tickets available , taken.

In Edinburgh, Scotland , people were queing up to an hour b4 showing, just to get a good seat!
  • Ci
Avatar Day was a success because people were talking about the damn thing afterwards. Honestly, the people hating on this movie and Cameron are sounding desperate.

It's just a movie people. CHILL.
  • ptek
That Coke commerical really reminded me of the old Indy Coke ad that played before the movie on VHS.
