2012

Roland Emmerich’s next disaster film 2012 won’t hit theaters for a couple weeks (November 13th), but a sequel has already been planned… but not the normal kind of sequel. Entertainment Weekly has learned that Emmerich and executive producer Howard Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice) are also developing a television drama titled 2013, which would be about what happens after the disaster. Gordon has already entered talks with ABC to develop the series, and if it does happen, don’t expect a lot of action to take place on the small screen, as this would be a drama set in a post apocalyptic setting.

Spoiler warning: Apparently some people on earth survive the epic disaster of 2012, and the series would be about “a group of people who survived …. on a piece of land that was spared or one that became an island in the process of the crust moving. There are so many possibilities of what they could do and I’d be excited to watch it.” So, don’t expect any of the big names from the movie cast to join the show. Gordon describes the series as being about “how will these survivors build a new world and what will it look like.”

Who would’ve thought that 2012 would be the inspiration for a television drama? I’m all for more post-apocalyptic sci-fi television shows, especially ones which might have a budget to show what earth has become. Of course, this is all just speculation until 2012 debuts in theaters. The box office of that film will likely decide if ABC will move forward with small screen plans.

Here's some news about "2012": The director of "2012" decided to scrap a scene which showed a Muslim holy site (Kabba) being destroyed because he feared violence against him. But he was okay with showing the Christ statue collapsing in Rio de Janeiro. The end result in Hollywood is that it's okay to attack/anger anyone but Muslims... Read all about it:

Roland Emmerich has admitted that he feared a fatwa would be placed on him if he filmed a scrapped scene for 2012.

The filmmaker is well known for decimating famed landmarks on movies including The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day. He stated that while he decided to destroy the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro because he is "against organised religion", he was fearful of the Islamic religious decree for a sequence that was planned but not shot.

The 53-year-old wanted to demolish the Kaaba, which is a cube-shaped building at the heart of Mecca and is the centre of prayers and the Islamic Hajj pilgrimage.

He told Sci-Fi Wire: "Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit. But my co-writer Harald said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie. And he was right. We have to all in the Western world think about this.

"You can actually let Christian symbols fall apart, but if you would do this with [an] Arab symbol, you would have a fatwa, and that sounds a little bit like what the state of this world is.

"So it's just something which I kind of didn't [think] was [an] important element, anyway, in the film, so I kind of left it out."

dude still raging over sg-1, huh?
  • I screwed my nose up at this idea first (mainly because it was 2013... PLEASE!) but it actually sounds like it could be pretty decent. In that case, I'm sure they'll find a way to f*ck it up.

Why the hell is there an Ewok on his back?
  • Give him some vodka and Al Roker!
  • Totally spoiled the ending of the movie: there will be survivors. Disappointing, for a movie about the end of the world.

Gee thanks, didn't it occur to you that the mere possibility of events after 2012 would ruin the ending?

Thank god it wasn't a movie I was particularly excited about, but this is pretty careless. A spoiler warning in the second half of the story is pretty redundant if the title of the story is the spoiler.

Not all that interested in this, but what I am interested in is how many people are going into this movie thinking it's going to help them prepare themselves with survival tips in 2012
  • I saw the movie last night and without giving anything away, i had an incling that a TV series might be on the cards.

Leave it to Hollywood to cash in on reality to the tune of millions. Unfortunately, they have left most idle mind or the bulk of society to ass-ume it is all about special effects and science fiction. Which 2012 is not, reality will not be forthcoming on tv. The land of never makes it all up as it frames the best selling shots. 2013 and reality shows? Could we look any further up Hollywood's anal cavity?
  • Disaster is entertainment? Only until it strikes the reality of your life. Emmerlich's sense of sensationalism will no dioubt cost thousands of people their very lives. Of course, that doesn't matter to him, its all about how many millions he can cash in on. In the meantime, most people will think 2012 is all about entertainment. So sad.
