The official movie trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now online… Watch it after the jumpp.

Update: The trailer is now officially online at Myspace, embedded below.

There are a numerous rumors that a new Prince of Persia game will launch next year. Computer and Video Games have Ubisoft denying this however. Foolish, maybe, as the rumours seemed to start with the film’s producers, and I’d expect they’d know.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis, to help put the trailer into context:

From the team that brought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy to the big screen, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films present PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME, an epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia. A rogue prince (JAKE GYLLENHAAL) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (GEMMA ARTERTON) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Set in the mystical lands of Persia, PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME is an epic action-adventure about a rogue prince (JAKE GYLLENHAAL) and a mysterious princess (GEMMA ARTERTON) who race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

    OK, everybody now,

    3....2....1: Looks expensive!

    Seriously, I couldn't care less.
  • matt
everybody needs to quit complaining. i bet half of you couldn't find persia on a map.. hah.
  • Patricia
alright i see... i can sort of understand why it is in that accent... is kinda of interestin (love the game btw)... but i dont like it.... maybe it will be a hit but it wont be memorable... hopefully it will be forgotten
and Jake Gyllenhaal, he can look a lot like the prince (only thanks to the costume and mak-up artist) but seriously that accent and that particular look and expresion before any action movement that can't-be-erased in his whole life. "Jake Gyllenhaal pretending to be The prince of persia".
    Spiderman was better....
  • AB
god, people bitch about everything, if the accent is correct, i bet some people will call it stereotyping, if not, they complain. And Persian's accent have to be one of the hardest thing to imitate.

This look better than i expected though

    Awful "comic moments".

    FUCKIN AWESOME!
  • EvanJDeBiase
this looks like a bad combination of the mummy, zorro, and 300.

also: jake gyllenhaal is a ridiculous person
  • bdadde
Movie looks like it was shot really well and the effects look great. With that said this 2:30 trailer felt 5:00 long and really was quite boring. Usually the trailer is the best thing about the movie so hopefully this isn't a reflection of what's to come. This could be the first time a studio goes back and cuts a cooler trailer to test on audiences based on audience feedback. Keep the derogatory comments coming people.
  • riggs
the ending of that trailer reminded me of the game, they shouldve scrapped the love story and kept the action going for most of the movie.
  • Sky-what?
Ive played the original, the trilogy (skipped the crappy new one) and
being a fan of Bruickheimer ill be there day one...i can see some of the green screen work needs some fixing...but they have till may to sort that out! Im confident that this film will be turned into a trilogy or atleast "Warrior Within" will be made...next summmer blockbuster.

And if people complain...then why go see popcorn flicks...and dont deny, everyone has a dirty taste for popcorn summer blockbusters
  • Dr_Gonzo
Looks awesome, can't wait. It actually makes me want to play the game again.
  • davidtheartist
This looks fing epic. I have lots of respect for jake both being a really good dramatic actor (Donny Darko) and a goofy clown (bubbleboy). Hes a well rounded actor and a serious one. I expect many many more things from him. I think this is the movie that will bring him to the forefront of peoples dream hero when casting movies. I think the quality of this film looks amazing. I cant wait to see it. They packed so much into it that you cant really say that they put all the best parts in it. You know they are saving so much for the full experience!

The only way I'd watch this was if nothing else decent was out and I was extremely bored. I am a fan of cinematography. The story just seems so blah and I doubt I would care for any of the character.
  • Regicide
    Really?

Who put together this trailer? Why are they showing us the absolute worst traits of the movie? 'You must go to the Temple of Magic and survive the Shadow Assassins!' Yeah, cause I needed to be reminded that it's adapted from a video game. Wonderful job.

It's got a budget, just show us special effects (that apparently works on half the commenters) to distract us from the inexplicable lack of a decent fight scene.
  • Haha thank you, I hate when people complain about movie accents or how a White Guy is playing a Persian Prince, It's based on a video game people, if you want to get nerdy (which it looks like everyone does) I highly doubt that in a long time ago in a galaxy far far away they we're speaking perfect english on many different planets, They don't care, they are going to make millions off of this movie as well as the 2 sequals to follow.
  • SERIOUS DISCUSSION ABOUT PERSIANS:

To open, first of all, it's a freaking movie people...

Second, if you actually do think Jake Gyllenhaal not being Persian is worthy of wasting space on a comment thread, I smite your retarded argument with these simple facts:

    1. The majority of Persians are CAUCASIAN. Sure, there are Arabs too, but many even have blonde hair and blue eyes...GASP?! Wikipedia, folks, Wikipedia. "Indo-European Aryans" <--google THAT.

    2. If we're holding a Jerry Bruckheimer movie to the same cultural / dialect standards as previous historical epics, I will burn my copies of Ben Hur AND The Ten Commandments (Heston ain't a Jew...he's Aryan!), Passion of the Christ (Caviezel...raging Catholic! Ack!) and Gandhi (Ben Kingsley ain't...err...we'll he's only HALF...oh...crap, his real name is Krishna Bhanji...um...well Gandhi was FULL ON INDIAN! Screw that movie, it's off my shelf!)

    3. It's a freaking movie.

Can we stop this discussion now and judge it solely on it's merits as a Summer popcorn movie that will take up all of 2 hours from your Memorial Day Weekend?

    Q.E.D.

    I'm out.

Hey bud, let's get some things straight.

Yes, the word "aryan" originated in the Persian region, but the word came to describe a very different type of people in the 20th century - mainly the Nordic peoples of Northern Europe. "Aryan" has a very different connotation today; the word's defining attributes changed over the centuries, from Persian to Nordic, so to say that the Persians can be described as "Aryans" in this day in age wouldn't make sense. Thus, the Persians (Iranians), at least the vast majority of them, have dark skin/dark hair.

And just because you referenced Ben Hur, The Passion, and Gandhi as similar casting instances doesn't mean Hollywood's inherent racism is somehow justified. And in any case, it kind of makes sense for Christians to play the Jewish characters in those films because they are about Christianity and or conversion; Ben Hur gives Jesus water while he is walking towards his crucifixion and it is implied that he has received Jesus as his savior after this instance. In The Passion, what Jew would play Jesus being crucified? Especially under the direction of Gibson?

Furthermore, and most importantly, this is a discussion forum. To call people "retarded" for commenting upon the casting of a clearly non-Iranian for the title role of Prince of PERSIA is very trollish of you. These casting comments are in the realm of film, so don't preach what can and what can't be commented upon.
  • Yes, I understand Aryan doesn't refer to the "Hitler" Aryans we all know and love, I'm just trying to say that Persian doesn't (and didn't) always connote dark skinned Arab. Besides, Gyllenhaal is dark skinned and dark haired, so I'm not sure what people are worried about. For example, THIS dude (http://www.iranian.com/Arts/2007/January/NIMANY...), an Iranian "movie star." Looks pretty much like Jake, but I doubt a studio would cast him in a lead role. Enjoy Jake, I think he'll surprise us.

Furthermore, heretofor, etc, etc, yes, you take my other movie examples far too seriously...again, just trying to say people can complain about Persia, but they should think back on all the other "mis-casting" and Queen's English in other movies they've looked past and enjoyed.

And, yes continue discussing this on a movie site if you want, but we've been discussing this for a year. Now the trailer's out, so discuss it. We get it.
  • Ashitaka
I still don't understand why Jake Gyllenhaal is the Prince of PERSIA. Oh yeah, Disney are xenophobic.
  • razor
    i'm sold

Is it just me or is that Naveen Andrews at 2:16?

Anyway, this actually looks really good. Glad to see they didn't go with that modern font for the logo like they used on the poster.
  • waqman
Looks like shite. Notice how Arterton doesn't shut up throughout the entire trailer. Were we really that stupid that we needed narration throughout the entire thing? Like Sherlock Holmes I don't think this will be too good. POTC: Curse of the Black Pearl is too high a bar for either of these films to reach. I'm guessing Shanghai Knights and the Mummy Returns are more...realistic expectations.
  • Chipmnk
Looks a little generic to me, personally. Sort of like another Mummy movie. I suppose it could go either way though.
  • Some scrub
Dear Hollywood, this movie looks fucking terrible. Signed, the moviegoing public.
  • Rick_Dickulous
It looks pretty unappealing to me. A bunch of lame-ass CGI nonsense interspersed with some expository dialogue.

Everything looks like a pedestrian Bruckheimer production. Pass.
  • You know what? I freakin' BUY this. I didn't think I'd be able to suspend disbelief with Jake's casting, but I'll be damned - this could be a hell of a lot of fun.
  • sickwithunwisecommercialism
im so sick of these big movies! dont they care that people are tired of shitty remakes and predictable stuff? its all the same. stop! ur ruining movies for us! and that self absorved lady deserved to be cut from the movie! ladies dont act like that in persia!
  • dozo
damnit... I actually enjoyed it. looks like a typical summer action romp, yet I couldn't help but chuckle at some of the jokes.
  • It's like Donnie Darko with a big bugdet, what with the time traveling and end of the world vortexes. If the action is good I'll be there.
  • looks awesome, and the opening shot of the city looked like assassins creed, which reminds me that they should make that into a movie, it has a lot of potential
  • existenz
From the trailer it seems as if that girl has a LOT of dialogue. The action could be cool, but I'm having flashbacks of The Mummy.

I'll reserve judgment until seeing it, but the trailer is not impressive.
  • Guest
The Mummy films was not based on a Egyptian character it was set in Egypt. if it was called Prince of Egypt the lead should atleast be played by an Egyptian or someone with a Egyptian background.
  • Snorthog
Gotta say that I'm quite pleased with Disney lately, seeing how their going a bit more "out there" with their ratings (PG-13s for this, Tron Legacy, hopefully more).
  • starscream9289
Definitely has Pirates feel to it.

    Looks like summer popcorn fun.
  • Aladdin Sane
Pretty underwhelmed. Then again, it's competing with Tom & Jerry for my attention right now. I'll give it another go in HD later.
  • Russel
I would put this at the level of the Pirate movies, save for the charisma of Johnny Depp's Captain Jack, though an upgrade from a Pirate's movie that only had Bloom and Knightly.

This'll be fun to watch, as long as the action set pieces aren't too incredibly 'busy'.
  • Meli_V
It doesn't look great, but it looks like a fun popcorn flick.
  • Sketch
I wonder if they'll have like the option to rewind after he gets shot or dies. Or if the movie sucks.
  • Fir3Wolf
I've played all the games including the newest one, which wasn't that good at all. The trailer was cool and it looks pretty so I'll probably see it. I think it's going to be an enjoyable watch.
  • digby
Don't lie, you nerds are ALL going to see this...bad accents or not.
  • kfizz
I don't really think your any better your on a comment thread of a movie trailer. It just such a odd word nerd to use in this time and day. Back in the day it was a pretty brad game for its time.
  • Sorry, kfizz, I meant to call you an "ESL Nerd"
  • luke
yes im going to watch it i never said i wont watch it. even with the bad accent LOL
  • The Great Cambino
    Nope.
  • Moviola
Looks like Conan the Barbarian meets The Mummy. That's not a bad thing. We need more Conan styled adventures. Shame that this won't have beheadings and naked women. For that, I expect that Conan will still be superior to this, no matter how much better the effects are. Barbarians will always be more bad ass compared to princes.
  • Frodo
MUST ..BRING ..THE RING ..TO.. MORDOR!
  • Brandon
Looks pretty, but nothing grabs me. Pass.

this is going to be funny when the racist people who is Anti-Islam going to watch a movie that is based on Islamic culture.
  • PoP background
The Persians in the games have nothing to do with Islam at all because the period they are in is pre-Islamic Iran where the state religion is Zoroastrianism. The newest PoP game touches upon a tiny bit of that religion.
  • albert123456
Actually, the persians depicted on the games (and on the movie) have nothing to do with Islam. Islam came way after the historical time period that inspires the game and movie.
