Cool Stuff: XKCD’s Movie Narrative Charts

zz3fd52a6b

XKCD has produced a series of highly detailed charts showing the character interactions in the narratives of some of the most popular films of all time, including the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars (original trilogy), Jurassic Park, 12 Angry Men, and the insanely complicated to follow indie sci-fi film Primer. Click on through to see the chart in high resolution.

Actual primer timeline for anyone interested:

When I saw this earlier today, I wondered how long it would be before it was posted on /Film. . . .

The Primer one was the best LOL

12 Angry Men should've had Juror #8 on his own and then show everyone slowly coming over to his side. :I
  • The Primer chart is totally inaccurate. Aaron's timeline goes squiggle up, circle left, crisscross, backward spin, and THEN squiggle down. Were they even paying attention? Jeez.
  • Amazing!
  • Some utter LotR nerd somewhere has already printed this narrative chart and pasted it to his or her wall. Probably his.

I was actually considering doing that this morning when I first saw it...and I'm a girl.

Girls who are into LOTR are sexy as hell. I dressed as Gandalf for Halloween, complete with a 3 foot Frodo on my back (piggy-back style) and some girl at my college bar said "So when's Shadowfax coming to pick you up?" And she was cute - the LOTR girls are hotties, unlike the Trekkies or Star Wars ones. Why is that? Anyway, I went back to her place that night.... (Thank you White Wizard!)

Ahahaha I'm glad us LOTR fangirls are paving the way for attractive nerddom. The Tree of Gondor tattoo on my back applauds her (and you.)

Fun fact: I had just finished watching Primer for the first (and last) time about 30 minutes before I checked my webcomic bookmarks last night.

Good thing you didn't get spoiled.

And I went as Marty McFly for Halloween this year, and the day after I came up with the idea xkcd posted this comic:
