I think the real world (or le monde, as the image has it above) is starting to wake up to James Cameron’s Avatar. Within the last two days I’ve been asked about the film by three non-cineaste and non-geek folk, the type who seldom go to the cinema at all and rarely take a punt on anything in some way off the wall or ‘risky’. They seemed keen on this one though and from what I could make out they all seemed to be expecting the most epic action film ever made. Is that what they’ll get?

After the break, a closer look at the new Avatar trailer and some rather interesting Russian and French posters for the picture.

Vimeo user Gurisa edited together the following video which allows a clear and easy comparison between the effects work seen in the teaser with that in the new trailer. I was actually an hour into my own comparison when I found this, so I’m particularly grateful to Gurisa for the hard work.

There was a range of Russian Avatar posters over at Kinopoisk but almost as soon as I saved them, they vanished without explanation. I feel it’s my duty to park them here now, then. At least until they vanish again.

The same gallery also featured this French poster which declares a release date of December 16th. The plot thickens.

See how they lean towards the orange a lot more than the posters we’ve already seen? There’s not really this much orange in any of the official stills, either - though, of course, we saw plenty in the trailers and great deal in the Avatar Day footage. In places, this will be a rather orange film.

Is there some sly marketing plan that involves slowly introducing orange into the marketing materials? Maybe. Or maybe that idea is just nuts. Cameron’s definitely using the colour scheme to some effect in the movie, but are that advertisements really keying into that?

The French one is the best, but I don't like that non-realistic light from the sun.
  • Yeah, all of the Russian posters have their contrast turned way up, it's pretty ugly. I wonder why that is. Do Russians like more color?
  • dAVE
    DEVIN FERACI AND CHUD EXPOSED!!!!

Why ? Well, it is a long story and actually quite a convoluted one, long story short, Devin actually got upset that he could not attend an advanced preview (as a member of press) to see an advanced preview of a picture that shall remain nameless. He also has a personal grudge against Jim Cameron himself. This i will explain, Devin has been blacklisted by FOX execs, the reason for this is partially down to the fact that Devin was obnoxious in reviews insulted core members of various teams and insinuated lies and lawsuits. This can even be seen today in his writings on AVATAR`s plagiarism claims. There is also it has to be said a great deal of backdoor shenanigans involving Devin and the hierarchy of FOX. In short Devin is blackballed. Devin found this out via his own message board forums. Now im not standing here trying to defend FOX`s output for the last 6 years, how could i ? What i am trying to inform you on is this... This is personal, This has nothing to do with fan expectation, it has nothing to do with the progress of cinema...

IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH A PERSONAL EFFORT TO DERAIL THE PRODUCTIONS IMPACT.

Yes it is pathetic, yes it is childish, but if you read Devin for any amount of time, you realise childish is exactly what Devin is. the whole AVATAR deal on Chud.com is what the online industry describe as "Leaf littering" take your core audience turn them onto your ideals and use that in turn to attack your enemies. Very simple and very effective. It has been done before and it will continue to happen. It can be a good thing, however when the motives become personal and not representative of the greater fact, that is when moral issues arise. I have it on high authority FOX and in particular Jim Cameron is highly upset with Devin and the continuing abuse he keeps throwing at not just the production but the people who this movie is aimed at (which by the way, is everyone). If you were to lay out the level of abuse aimed at AVATAR and pin that to the production outgoings, you will clearly see that Chud and the level of attack has steadily gone up with the anticipation, until finally we see an attack so blatant and mean that it will make even the most skeptic sit up and pay attention, Devin is literally trying to get third parties involved to actually file lawsuits against the core creators of AVATAR, in particular James Cameron. I am told this is serious stuff, and fox is itching for Devin to step a foot out of line so he can be drawn over the coals. This is a very childish and personal situation Devin has created for himself. My guess is the biggest backlash will eventually fall on Devin

Excuse me but this person is entitled to his opinion as is Feraci. Who are you to flag his post or assume that this is speculation. Perhaps its true - but thats the sole purpose of forums: for users to express their opinions and viewpoints. So Feraci is allowed to express his opinion / ramblings and this user is not??
  • @twilightsection, Wow, you must get a lot of hate on these boards with that name. Perhaps it is true, but this isn't the place to report it. Putting it here and presenting it as fact can make people believe it's true even if they are wary of the source, it's called the sleeper effect, they forget where they read it but they don't forget the alleged facts. And this isn't a forum, it's a blog. "Keep the conversation civil and on topic. If your comment does not add to the conversation, it will be removed." This is hardly at all related to the posters and trailer comparison of Avatar. I don't know anything about Feraci or this feud between CHUD and FOX, nor do I care, why do you think I'm defending him? I'm guessing you're in cahoots with dAVE.

THE SUN SHINES DIFFERENTLY IN OTHER GALAXIES.
  • To be honest, I'd rather see a movie called Abatap than Avatar.

"I think the real world (or le monde, as the image has it above) is starting to wake up to James Cameron’s Avatar."

Yeah, i think it's just you. My family and friends still think that it looks stupid.
  • MattEss
Yeah, I have never had a human being ever bring up Avatar as a topic for discussion, aside from online.
  • Well...my family thinks it looks good. So na na naa naaa.

This posters deleted because there is some trouble with gamma and color correction. Here is normal poster: http://img2.pict.com/9e/65/c9/1878692/0/foxavat...
  • Ashitaka
Less saturation and contrast - that looks SO much better. Good find.
  • The trailer FX comparison is amazing. I think the improvement is stunning. I thought it looked better when I was watching the trailer, but I assumed I must have been imagining it or that I had just gotten used to the look of the film.
  • Martin
The russian posters are just awefull.

My two cents on the trailer: EPIC

But I´d rather see less footage released untill release. They showed too much and the internet featurette spoiled the whole fucking movie for me. I wish I could just delete everything I just saw and then see the movie with fresh eyes.

Cameron should trust his gut and hold back all the cool footage. I dodn´t think he would show the Leonopteryx and show a glimpse of the awesome chase set pieces involving said creature.
  • RosanatorDA
maybe thats not the cool footage.
  • keesvd
Well, it's oftenly best not to watch any footage of a film you know you want to see. It's only meant to get people into the cinema and for that, most of it is spoiled, otherwise the big audience wouldn't see it. It's strange that fans are known to watch every single thing, whereas they should know that it's way cooler to see things on the big screen for the first time... Ah well.
  • MattEss
"rarely take a punt on anything seemingly off the wall or risky"

That's what I'm worried about with this movie, it does look about as little risky as a movie gets. I'm afraid i will have no genuine feeling while watching this, i'm afraid it will try to give me goosebumps by reminding me of scenes in The Lord of the Rings, try to make me care about forbidden love by reminding me of Pocohantis, try to make me care about natives unjustly treated by reminding me of Dances With Wolves. It'll all be emotion through suggestion of another time I've felt emotion, rather than real emotion. This arenas to be a tactic used increasingly more often in modern film and it just doesn't work for me.

That being said, I think it looks like it may be fun, but I fear I may just forget the film as a whole soon after, no matter how cool the 3D is.
  • Mike
I still can't get over how ridiculously stupid the Navi look.
  • Mandrakeroot
Everything about this movie looks and sounds terrible. This must be Cameron's punishment for beating his ex-wives.
  • cambion
By beating, you must mean "being a jerk to." Cameron didn't beat his wives.
  • brokenhelix79
Both my girlfriend and my niece have asked me about Avatar, and neither of them are particularly into sci-fi or action films. In fact, my girlfriend seemed genuinely excited to go see it in December, and that was BEFORE I showed her the newest trailer online. I'd say the impact of the marketing will start to really be felt leading up to Thanksgiving and on into December, which is to be expected.

Personally, I couldn't care less about the 3-D aspect. I chose to see Up in 2-D and I don't feel I missed anything. I also couldn't care less about the rather flimsy comparisons to Fern Gully and Delgo and whatnot. I don't quite understand the hatred for this film. Aside from Cameron's boasting and admittedly large ego, there is no real reason why this movie can't work.
  • alaninthehood
yes, there are real reasons. the design of the na'vi is incredibly unappealing, unoriginal, and silly. the trailer features some rather corny dialogue (a long with the scenes shown at comic con[sigourney weaver's scene...jesus christ]), and with the recent script leak last thursday it's no wonder that some speculate on Cameron's sole authorship of the script.
none of his previous films feature dialogue this by-the-numbers, ludicrous, predictable; and i'm appalled at how simple the film's arc is.

and it's hilarious that brendon connelly mentions a color scheme, as Cameron has tried avoiding a consistent design approach to this. trying to keep it "real" and "if you're breathing Pandora" has hurt the overall silhouette of Cameron's design approach; the colors are vibrant and silly, it's a kiddie tale of Sci-Fi cranked up on a $300 million budget.

Cameron is one of my favorite filmmakers, T1, T2, and Aliens are some of my favorite films; I consider those films defining what Sci-Fi means to me. but it's become more than apparent that Cameron has become gimmicky with this new technology, and as a result has focused too much time on style rather substance.
i'm incredibly disappointed with the film's story overall, the script was too much of a pain to finish (why the FUCK was Laeta Kalogridis' name on the draft I read?). it's just as mechanic and formulaic as everyone speculates, and the dialogue is just as silly as the trailer unfortunately claims.

i could go on about how disappointed i am with this film, something i'd look forward to for years and years, especially when i grew up in the 90's loving Cameron's work. the fact that the main argument is to see it in 3D IMAX is not only ridiculous, but furthers the ludicrousness this film has already established.
those who say you've never seen anything like it are right; you're going to see a VERY safe Sci-Fi film, created by a once-great director.
  • brokenhelix79
Look, James Cameron is one of my favorite director's, too. I agree completely with you about T1, T2, and Aliens being favorites. That said, I think we can all admit there are some pretty cheesy and silly parts in both Terminator movies (although, in my humble opinion, Aliens is nearly flawless in terms of tone). The script for Avatar may not be the groundbreaking story we were all hoping for, and the effects might not be the perfectly realized vision we were promised, but can't we all just wait until we can experience the final product in all its glory? I AM excited about this movie, despite the naysayers, and I'm holding out hope that it will not be a waste of all of our time.
  • mcfly
  • Rockie
thanks for that link mcfly. cheers.
  • MickJ
Thanks, that featurette got me a lot more pumped than the actual trailer.
  • That effects comparison is pretty awesome. It is looking better and I'm warming up to Avatar. As long as you going in expecting a decent fantasy sci-fi action flick, you'll be good. If you go in expecting the most amazing film in the world, you'll be disappointed.

3D or 2D, I don't care. I'm looking forward to seeing this in the theater.
  • The poster fits the epic scenario.
  • Martin
I totally agree that average joe will be expecting to see the biggest action movie of all time after he sees the new trailer. The trailer was truly epic and did a perfect job of selling the movie.

But as I said before, I´m more worried that James Cameron and Fox now will oversell the movie, that they won´t hold back because they are afraid that geeks think the movie doesn´t look geekasmic enough.

I say that Cameron should have faith in his own work. I think he has, but that fox have started to sweat. My prediction is Avatar will do great at BO. Positive word of mouth will spread quickly and everyone and their sister will want to see Avatar.
  • keesvd
I don't like the immense saturation on the russian ones, the French one looks better. Then again, they're pictures of pictures, so the real thing probably looks different.
  • Justin
I showed the new trailer to a friend of mine's son, who is 4 years old. Once it was over, he asked me a thousand questions in rapid-fire succession, then asked if we could go see it NOW.

So if that's any indication, this movie will do just fine. As much as some of you might like to think otherwise, us sweaty, overzealous film dorks do not really do much for films in the long run.

Anyway, I think it looks amazing. Drew McWeeny's article on Hitfix pointing out that the film geek community hates anything bright and colorful is dead-on.
  • Is it just me or does it look like Sam Worthington is ALSO computer-generated in these posters? LOL
  • dogless
You didn't know? Sam Worthington IS CG. He's a modern day 'Simone', but the twist is, Avatar is really about him! He is James Cameron's avatar!

Did that not just blow your mind?!
  • zoey
i think the nav'i [sp?] look really really lame.
im looking at this as just a technical experiment with new film making hardware.
im know its already got its audience but im just not there.
and when i heard theres a 'falls in love with the alien' angle my cameron cheese alert woke up the whole neighborhood.
the guy just cant write that stuff without my eyeballs involuntarily going into a bad cheese seizure.
  • SgtZim
Good God, those posters are awful! Especially the one of her riding that creature. Not a good way to sell the movie...

On a side note, my friend had commented on how awful the Avatar teaser was so I showed him the new trailer last night and when he saw the opening shot of Jake in the bar being approached by the two military guys, he said 'Wait a minute, that's live action! What's going on?' He'd thought the movie was an animated film based on the teaser. And he works in the CG industry. Dunno if that's a good sign...
  • waqman
Your friend is kind of stupid if he didn't notice the LIVE ACTION SAM WORTHINGTON AND COMPANY AT THE START OF THE TEASER. I find it hard to believe that he could even get work at McDonalds.
  • John
Or there was another color pass still to be done...
  • starscream9289
Is Cameron intending for this to flop?

Because I don't think this is something that would appeal to mainstream audiences.
  • The Other Guest
I can't think of anyone who this film would appeal to. Just because he made good films in the 80s doesn't mean people are going to shed out cash to see a generic space opera.
  • brianrodden
The theatrical trailer is so much better than the teaser and it definitely made me want to see film. I was going to see it anyway, but that teaser really sucked.
  • Something tells me the trailer for the film James does after Avatar will NOT include the sell-tag 'from the director of Avatar'.
  • tek
The story is not original, the technology has been used in computer games before cameron got his hands on it. It is nothing we haven't seen before. Photo realistic cgi is still cgi. On the other hand had cameron genetically engineered real navi and filmed them and created 3d where you can physically walk around the film and view it from any angle than you can say this film is a game changer.
  • Martin
But you forgot the spaceship that Cameron would need to build for the space journey to another planet so that he could film the real alien environments and flora and fauna.
  • Skinny
Delgo 2 is gonna be awesome
  • The Guest
Aside from the splendiferous CGI, this seems to me like a very expensive, but very conventional fantasy movie. I also don't know how much people are really going to care about the Nav'i. They're sort of ugly and the Sam Worthington character's avatar is goofy looking (and not in a good way). The question is not whether people will see it (they will, of course) but whether it can really make back all the money being thrown at it, something we won't really know until years from now. Of course the studio will proclaim a glorious victory after the first weekend which will be huge of course. But when you add up all the CGI and promotional costs, I don't think you will ever see a movie of this bloated scope being made ever again. I think this is the end of an era, not the beginning of one.
  • concretelogic
Move budgets are going to keep rising. Every couple years there is a new "most expensive movie ever".
  • The Other Guest
''The question is not whether people will see it (they will, of course)''

I don't know anyone who wants to see this movie. I like movies as much as anyone else here, and I know that I won't even be watching this on DVD. This will most likely be a box-office flop.
  • Josh
I think the aliens and things would be better if they looked less CGI/cartoony. But appart from that I think it looks excellent.

And please sign the Avatar 2 petition too cos it's great

Everyone was saying that Titanic was going to flop.

... then people saw it. Rest is film history.
