men-in-black

We learned that Columbia was finally moving forward with a third Men in Black movie back in April, but at the time there was no script attached to the project. While there still isn’t much to report yet, we have learned that they’ve tapped the now-hot writer Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Idiocracy) for the screenplay. There’s no word yet on Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ involvement, but I can’t imagine they would bring the franchise back without featuring them in some capacity.

I’m also hoping that they’re able to bring Barry Sonnenfeld back to direct. He’s been working on the television end of things recently (we can thank him for Pushing Daisies gloriously candy-colored style), and I’m sure he’d like to get another feature under his belt to distance himself from the Robin Williams fiasco RV.

The studio is mum on what MiB3 may actually be about, but I do hope they avoid the usual pitfall of making the original young upstart a veteran who must then train more young blood. (I’m also saying this because I’m hoping we won’t get a chance to see Shia LaBeouf as a bumbling young agent.)

Cohen’s involvement with the film is a sign that it will probably be better than the disappointing Men in Black sequel. He’s a graduate of the Mike Judge school of comedy—having worked on Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill, in addition to Idiocracy. In my book, that’s good people.

Strangely enough, I’m actually sort of excited for a third Men in Black film. I loved the original when it first came out (admittedly, haven’t revisited it in years), and I think the series deserves a better successor than what we got with the sequel. The concept is undoubtedly ripe for further exploration.

Discuss: Men in Black 3, yay or nay? Who else would you like to see join the franchise?

  • as long as it's better than MIB 2. such a horrendous disappointment.
  • mbellerbrock
Yeah, I was opposed to this at first, but Devindra is right, if they can make something to make me forget 2 exists I'd be very happy.
  • MiBII was better then the first. No disappointment at all.
  • You live up to your name krazy joe :P
  • MIB was genius. extremely clever and fun and well-written.

i don't know what they were trying to do with MIB 2 but they failed miserably. seemed more like a cash in than anything else.

Yeah that second movie was gay as hell. The first film was a childhood favorite that obviously came from some actual artistic effort put forth to make it a good ass movie. Then the second movie just tossed all that good stuff in the toilet.
  • Why would you want to give Sonnenfeld the reigns after MIB2?
Very new blood is required to get anyone interested in MIB3.

(I still can't figure out why he didn't put Linda Fiorentino in a very, very short black skirt at the end of the first one.)

"good people" Indeed. I watched the first 2 the other day on AMC. Still a guilty pleasure. Jones and Smith are a great pair.

I anticipate this the same way that I am with GHOSTBUSTERS 3. With extreme prejudice.

The first MEN IN BLACK is one of the few fx comedies that works (along with GHOSTBUSTERS, GALAXY QUEST and arguably HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY) because it managed to strike an even balance between the humor and the fx. It's a very volatile alchemy that if handled wrong ends up in a putrid mess like MIB2 (as well as GHOSTBUSTERS 2).

So while I am interested in an MIB3, like I said, extreme prejudice.

You guys have got it all wrong, MIB2 is the new hotness and MIB is old and busted.

From what I remember hearing back when MIB2 came out, neither Smith, Jones or Sonnenfeld were interested in making a third one. But, I could be wrong on that statement, since I heard it a long time ago.

But, I think that if they were going to make an MIB3, I always felt that they should do a plot where someone finds out about aliens, and tells the whole world about them, and now the MIB have to red-flash the entire planet about their existence, on top of catching the guy who exploited them (who could easily be an alien in disguise, if you really wanted to have it be that way). Or maybe even just develop a weapon that, whenever an alien race is approaching Earth, has the power to red-flash from Earth into space these enemy aliens, and make them forget about ever attacking Earth and humans in general. But have it so that somehow along the way, the MIB accidentally red-flash the entire planet with this new massive weapon, and now they have to somehow tell every single human being what life they should now live. This could open up a new and interesting plot door and carve out new characters, because with this plot, the MIB can now control the future of every person and country simply by telling them all to get along and not hate each other anymore, or what have you. I don't know, I think my idea makes for an interesting plot (granted with some tooling of it), and I definitely remember reading or hearing Sonnenfeld say that if a third one is made, and it's again about an invading alien race and the basic buddy cop premise, don't bother seeing the film, because it'll be nothing new.
  • Tommy Lee Jones seems like he'd be way too ancient to appear in a third film.
  • shamrocknroll28
Anybody else get weirded out when they thought Ethan Coen was writing this?
  • The Great Cambino
Yeah, for a split second I thought we were going to get a quirky existential black comedy starring John Goodman and John Turturro that defied genres as it reinvented them. But we'll probably get a buddy cop movie with alien dick jokes. Which is ok with me.
  • "Cohen’s involvement with the film is a sign that it will probably be better than the disappointing Men in Black sequel."

Men in Black II was better then the first film. It had a wittier, funnier script.
  • Better script? Maybe. Better execution than the first, not so much.

i wanted mib2 to be about J and L, but they contrived to bring back tommy lee jones...which didn't work because the whole first movie hinged on the emotional resonance of K finding a replacement and going back to his fist love. Hate that sequel. This franchise is dead to me.

Even though I don't like the "introducing younger character as an agent" I'd take Lebouf over a horrible idea like Jaden Smith.
  • existenz
    Jaden Smith = barf.
  • existenz
Men in Black II was one of the worst movies I ever had to sit through. And that despite it being only 67 minutes long or whatever it was.
  • Kyle C.
I couldn't disagree more. The one thing that could hold Men in Black III from greatness is Barry Sonnenfeld. Don't get me wrong, the guy was awesome back in the day but he's seriously lost his touch. I cannot think of a single film he's made since the first Men in Black that has been any good. I mean, the man made Wild Wild West for godsake, RV was even better than that piece of shit.
  • starscream9289
    MIB II doesn't exist.
  • dangeer
Loved both movies. Good ol' cheesy fun. Can't wait for MIIIB!
  • Despite the Sequelitis that has been cast onto Hollywood by Forces Unbeknown to me I can safely state: it can only get better.
I am eager to see what they come up with.
  • MIIB had a cameo from Michael Jackson... 'nuff said.
