I love a well-told story.

That’s why I really enjoyed a small film called Stephen Tobolowsky’s Birthday Party (hereafter abbreviated as STBP) which made the rounds at many film festivals a few years ago. The film features a series of short stories, as told by legendary character actor Stephen Tobolowsky on the anniversary of his birth. The stories are funny, profound, and moving, and many of them stay with me to this day. In his lifetime, Tobolowsky has had some pretty wild and crazy adventures, not to mention the fact that he’s worked with directors like Paul Verhoeven, Harold Ramis, Christopher Nolan, and Spike Jonze, just to name a few.

Deep in my heart, I knew that even with STBP out there, Tobolowsky probably still had a bunch of great stories tucked away in the recesses of his memory. So, shortly after one of his recent appearances on the /Filmcast, I pitched Stephen the idea of recording more of his stories and releasing them in podcast form in an effort at continuing to promote the STBP DVD. Stephen agreed.

Thus, it gives me great pleasure to present to you the first episode of the Tobolowsky Files! The Tobolowsky Files is a new podcast from the people who brought you the /Filmcast, featuring a series of stories about life, love, and the entertainment industry, as told by Stephen Tobolowsky. In this very first episode, Stephen recalls stories about Halloweens past, along with their attendant sexiness, fun, humiliation, and danger.

What's with the Jerry Lee Lewis music in the background?
  • If you listen to the entire episode, this should become clear.
  • SgtZim
Just finished. Never mind, nothing to see here...
  • m_manzi
You will know once you listen to the story
  • Michael
That was fun. I look forward to future installments.
  • "You suck. You have no chance of having sex with a UFO."

    Nice. Keep em coming.
  • Sgt. Pepper
Thought this was a fun first ep. & look forward to hearing more stories from Stephen. The addition of this new podcast is welcome & interesting. Thanks for putting the time in to do it, Dave. Good job!

  • Stryker
Love this, Tobolowsky is a Prince, must have more.

    I haven't laughed this hard in a while :))))

Haven't listened to the show yet, but I'd like to make a suggestion of putting these episodes in a separate feed.

For those like me who sync the most recent episodes of their podcasts daily while removing older episodes, that leaves us just a day or two to listen to each of the shows you put out (/Filmcast, After Dark, Tobolowsky Files, interviews/specials, etc.).

Or do you you already have separate feeds for the different shows that I'm not finding?
  • fumuthabeotch
    Loved it! Keep them coming.

Ya I agree with Jason, these should be in a separate file. One feed for this many shows is getting to be a bit too much. Maybe have one for /Filmcast and After Dark and another for Tobolowsky Files and interviews. But hey if you keep them all in one I will keep listening.
  • MBFilms
Thanks was pretty entertaining. I like it. Keep it around for sure.
  • Celia
    don't you know anyone else?

I know a tall rabbit named Harvey. He travels with me everywhere but everyone keeps ignoring him like if he isn't even there.

Stephen's great, I hope this series continues. I would follow this to its own feed if people wanted it out of the /filmcast feed.
  • What a fantastic idea for a podcast! Keep it up. Love Stephen T!

Best podcast ever!!! More, more, more please
  • SlapAyoda
The first show was really fantastic. Can't wait to see more appear in my podcast list.
  • Cal
    That was awesome, thanks guys!

The narrative style with the music is great. Stephen is an excellent story teller.
  • Josh
Hilarious story. I'm very excited for more. But I do think it deserves a separate file. Still, great listen and ready for more stories.
  • It's gotta go somewhere else. I would almost recommend that Afterdark should have its own feed, or create multiple feeds (in iTunes) for everything and individual podcasts.

Great stories and laughs. I love how each one comes full circle and has a sort of message at the end. Also, totally agree with everyone who's saying Stephen is a great storyteller. Now I need to check out the movie while waiting for next week's podcast, haha.

As for the feed, maybe it'd be best in a new one. That way the /Filmcast feed is organized and people who don't even listen to the /Filmcast can easily find it. I'm sure there a bunch of Tobolowsky fans who don't visit us (yet).

My first thought was: why would you dedicate a whole series of podcasts to a boring old guy with a pretentious voice on order to advertise his DVD... but listening to the first episode completely changed my mind! His stories are well told, i got used to his voice and I might even take a look at STBP! Great idea!
  • Stuntman Mike
I love the show and can't wait to hear more.

Just wanted to add I e-mailed Mr. Tobolowsky saying how much I loved the show. And the man is nothing but class, got a response about an hour later thanking me personally and chatting about some of the other stuff I wrote.

Just wanted to say Stephen is #1!
  • Great podcast, thoroughly enjoyed it. Had me smiling whilst doing some shopping today and looking like an idiot. Keep them coming!
  • Greg Freeman
Fantastic story. Keep this in the normal feed please.
  • loki50187

  • syndromepix
This was a great listen. Looking forward to the next one. Will definitely try and check out the movie as well. Great stories!
  • That was awesome. I don't care if you keep them in the same feed or create a seperate one, just keep 'em coming.
  • Robijnson
This was great. Tobolowsky is a great story teller and definitely has some things to share. Please keep these coming; I'd prefer it in the same feed so I don't have to subscribe to another podcast.
  • paul
I'd also much prefer to have them in a different feed.
  • Kirk
Fantastic. Please do more. Stephen is an amazing story teller. i laughed out loud and chuckled the whole way through. Stephen is a master of what may be a dying art. Thank you for bringing this wonderful joy to my life.
