The Buzz: Michael Jackson’s This is It!

This is It

Sony released the Michael Jackson concert documentary This Is It tonight in theaters. Even movie critics and press were kept in the dark until nationwide press screenings on Tuesday night. So what is the early verdict? Lets take a look at the early buzz in the Buzz Report.

We Are Movie Geeks: “This movie is definitely a film for the fans, and everyone in the theater proved that with all of the claps after each song.” … “Think whatever you want about him personally but when you see this film you will walk away in tears, jump into your car and put your favorite MJ song on. I dont care what you have going on in the next two weeks, if you miss seeing this on the big screen you will truly hate yourself, and I will also hate you too.”

Film School Rejects: “As a blend of backstage footage, a few testimonials praising Michael, sharply-produced show elements, and the musical performances – This Is It is a stunning look at something that’s both epic and personal. Beautiful. Thrilling. Revealing. This film is a great documentary that delivers a larger-than-life figure in his natural environment as both a mega-celebrity and just a man standing alone on a stage.”

The Hollywood Reporter: “Looks like the world has missed one helluva concert. Whatever cynicism one might harbor about this Hail Mary piece of cinema — which can be called the first concert rehearsal movie ever — what this strange yet strangely beguiling film does is capture one of pop culture’s great entertainers in the feverish grips of pure creativity. The screen is filed with performers, musicians, choreographers, crew members and craftsmen, but the movie’s laserlike focus is on Jackson. You understand what it takes to attain such dizzying heights in entertainment — and perhaps why he chose to stay away for a decade.”

Star Ledger: “As padded, stitched-together, and improbable a documentary as there ever was – still does something quite remarkable. It clears away the months of lawsuits and medical reports, the years of weirdness and scandal. And, at least for a little while, it recalls those old joys by showing us Michael Jackson in the safest and most normal place he ever knew: On stage, in a spotlight, in front of an adoring crowd.”

Florida Union: “If you had time traveled into a screening of “This Is It” from, say, 2008, you could watch the entire movie and not know that Michael Jackson is now dead. That’s how restrained, how remarkably unsentimental, is this exuberant, astonishingly entertaining concert film. It doesn’t try to deify him or explain him, and it’s all the more moving for that understatement.”

I went out to a pretty new big multiplex a couple of weeks ago to a movie theater that had just updated its sound system and screens.

I was waiting for UP to start and I had already heard about the Michael Jackson movie but I'm not a MJ fan(I'm 23 so he was active and popular when I was too young to really realise) so I wasn't interested in it.

Then they get the cheesy "For two weeks only crap" out of the way and show you extracts from him on stage performing...

I've never heard Billie Jean on a sound system worth tens of thousands nor have I ever seen such a colourful performance with hundreds of performers on screen.

I mean just the sound of Billie Jean on those hi tech spears, that big glorious screen with hundreds of colourful performers.. god it was incredible.

In terms of sheer entertainment I really can't ignore this movie and I wish I could because every ounce of logic in me says it's just a video of a performance no longer happening.

I am going to go watch it. Not sure if I will enjoy it or be blown away by it but I know if I don't see it within that two week period I may never be able to see all those glorious colourful performances and that great beat at a hi tech theater again.

I suppose this depends on your local theaters set up but the colours were so vibrant and the sound so crisp and the trailer just complimented it so well it was absolutely stupendous. I'd recommend most people go give it a watch too it's probably not worth missing.

This seems like something that you would kick yourself if you dont see it in theaters.

How does the fact that he was a child molester get glossed over here?

Say what you want about his music, he was a messed-up joke for years until he died. How does that change the second he flatlines?
• Innocent until proven otherwise, I guess. In the same way you believe he absolutely did the unthinkable, others equally believe those two boys were told to say it happened so parents could get their hands on MJs wealth.
• Thumb_at_FistOfBlog
That's insane. I'm pretty confident that he was weird like that. Other people aren't. That's cool. Crazy, if you ask me, but whatever.

The thing that blows me away is that he was the butt of every joke in the world until he died. He spent years being laughed at. We watched in horror as he held his (admittedly radly-named) children over certain death. We thrilled at pictures of him in his greyhound mouth mask. We, as a country (and I'm overstating it a bit here, but give me this one for effect), wouldn't have left our kids alone with him for ten minutes.

Then he dies and we, again, as a country (and world), manage to crash most social media mourning the death of someone who was, two hours earlier, the setup to and punchline of more jokes than you could count on all the fingers and toes of an overcrowded gradeschool class.

We forget too fast.

He was the butt of jokes because society cannot bind the hands of genius. You wish you could begin to scratch the surface of his impact on humanity. Do something with your life instead of bad mouthing someone you didn't know. He has the Guiness Book record for donating the most money in the world to help needy children. What have you done lately for anyone?
• starscream9289
Isn't it funny how parents kept sending their children down to Neverland to play and sleepover, even though Jackson was being accused of molesting children at the time.
• clarence1
Read "Redemption" by Geraldine Hughes. She was the sole legal secretary of Barry Rothman, the attorney for the boy that was alledgedly molested. It was blackmail on the part of the boys father. Then read "Conspiracy" by Aphrodite Jones. The media condemned Michael Jackson before he was proven innocent by perpetuating hateful rumours, innuendoes and reporting despicable accusations. Read before you make ignorant statements. Most pedophiles have hundreds of victims. No child ever corroborated any story of molestation by MJ. It was all for the greed of money by the children's parents. Get your facts straight.

i really enjoy lots of MJ music. And at the end of the day, i feel sorry for him more than anything. but touching kids is just not ok. and once you meet someone where something like this had happened to them, it really changes your perspective. or at least swings you to one side more.

I'm sure this film is great, and i'm interested in seeing it just for the dancing almost. He was so good. but, if he really did touch kids. i'll always judge him by that. just sick.

I touch kids all the time. Does that make me evil??

Micheal Jackson was a genius. He motivated, and inspired people of all ages, color, and religious beliefs using his extraordinary gift of sound. His words broke barriers and bent boundaries. His voice reached limitless limits, and his beats pumped life into our hearts. Using creativity, and original angles of thought, he changed modern music forever. Michael Jackson embodied the true essence of a musician through every facet of this beautiful art. "This Is It" offers us one last chance to absorb the phenomenal transcending sounds, and movements by the greatest performer who ever lived.

Oh my God, this is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you the statement that MJ was a "genius," but for Christ's sake he wasn't the deity you are describing him to be, nor was he for certain "the greatest performer that ever lived." It is a great loss that he died because I truly liked the man's music, but I'm not about to put him on a higher pedestal than musicians past, present or future just because his death is recent.

Wow, kinda surprised at all the positive reviews so far given how polarizing MJ was and the notion of this film being released at the time of his death. But as a MJ fan I'm happy to see that this last video document of a legend is the real deal. I mean at 1 hr 51 mins, there is a substantial amount of footage I'm guessing. I was skeptical of this project at first, but now I have to see it.

They should show it on a double bill with The Woodsman

So putting the focus back on the film, I went to the NY press screening last night. Yes, this is a must-see for MJ fans and perhaps for all to see a musical genius in his element and on the BIG SCREEN. I may go see it again in IMAX. & yes, this would have been an AMAZING concert to go see live. RIP MJ.
• mvp
Wow, I knew this would be well received but am even more thrilled to see such glowing reviews. Getting my tickets on Fandango for this week, sounds like this is not to be missed -- for fans and non-fans alike.
• CyT
Seeing this tonight, cant wait! Wished I could see him performing it in real life though :(
• CyT
Ok .. saw it last night.

To everyone who said this is an exploitation of him for Sony. To everyone who said this man is not an artist. To everyone who said this movie is a waste of time. And finally to all the commenters out there who make their minds up before seeing a film...

SUCK IT

This movie/doco/rehearsal tape/strange thing was a very interesting and candid look into a superstar doing what he does best. I felt in no way that I was giving Sony my money, or exploiting his memory. I didn't even think about the fact he has passed away (except for a small part where it shows rehearsal videos from the Jackson 5 as kids) and it was an honest, open look at what goes into making something that really looked like it would have been the biggest, best concert ever.

MJ looked really happy to be doing it. It seemed to just come effortlessly to him, and everything he said resonated in a way that showed he understood the art of entertainment on a level beyond almost everyone.

Add in the things he said and talked about, I couldnt help but think this human being we were seeing (not some deity for once) was just a lovely, amazing person.

Im glad it was made, and Im glad I saw it at the cinema. It felt like a cut down version of what everyone would have been given the opportunity of experiencing it. Highly recommend.

Listen who cares about what he 'did' or 'didn't' do, yes if he raped children that's a terrible thing but this movie isn't about that, it's about what he did best, writing and performing music. I believe the artist showed always be seperated from the art, Polanski should have his trial and be done with it, MJ had his trial, it's done, its over, if you don't believe in your own justice system (not that I don't blame you) that's a different issue.

For any one that has seen it, is it worth seeing it in Imax, I don't want to waist my money to see a movie I can see on a still pretty big screen.

I do not know whether This is it is the last goodbye the Michael Jackson left to this world, but the fact that could not be denied is This is it shows us some real and warm details in Michael Jackson’s life. During his life, he always was the hottest topic, from his wonderful voice, his amazing song, his fantastic dancing to the scandals of abusing children and bankrupts. He was always the center and the peak of the entertainment field.
In the film, lots of scenes show that he is a great man, a genius who was full of dreams. He could work with the staff well and just be one of them. After watching This is it, sometimes I imagine that this King of pop kingdom who was unwilling to grow up might like to wear the lanyard and become one part of the crew, he might need the warmth of the crowd. In my opinion, life of Michael Jackson is a tragedy about loneliness. When I look at the pictures of his wonderland house, tears always run out from my eyes and I could not control them. I could picture in the midnight, the genius and king of the pop kingdom would sit on the carousel and look upon the sky. He might wish he could fly in the sky and could get rid of the bad news from him. He might wish he could live in a better place in where the color of skin would not be a reason for to be disgusting.
In the rhythm of Heal the World, Michael Jackson, the king left us forever. And all he left is the wonderful music, the moonwalk dance and the good wishes for a better world, which he did not enjoy in his life and could not see the day when it comes true. This is it and it is the end.
