Clint Eastwood’s Invictus Movie Trailer

Invictus

Warner Bros has released the first trailer for Clint Eastwood’s new film Invictus, which tells the “inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar, to help unite their country.” Matt Damon plays Pienaar, and Morgan Freeman plays Mandela.

Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid.  Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

Invictus looks like it will definitely be in the running come awards season, which shouldn’t be a surprise, especially considering the track record of the modern-era Eastwood’s films. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

I love morgan freeman...I love eastwood...am I the only one that was a bit bored by this trailer? Seemed quite...meh...

OMG!! LOL!!WTF!!LMAO!!!!Damon's accent is HORRIBLE!!Freeman looks NOTHING like Mandela!! This film is a WHITEWASH!!!!

Sorry, just channeling the usual trolls & idiots who even now are doubtless preparing all manner of snark for what seems like a classy movie for grown-ups. I like this trailer although I note they're not giving much away are they. Come to think of it that's actually a rather refreshing change for a movie trailer. Just think of it - going into a movie without knowing every plot twist in advance. Wow!

Is there another place that has this trailer except apple? Can't view it on my computer.

I'm feeling a bit worried. I agree with Fred about the trailer and the lack of spoilers or giving away the movie, but still, I do feel slightly apprehensive about this flick. Eastwood is either hit-or-miss when it comes to his movies, and Changeling left a really bad taste in my mouth (I actually liked Gran Torino). Hopefully this isn't one of Eastwood's misses or ends up being a conventional sports movie, or both.
  • I'm impressed by Damon nailing that accent. Impressive. With Eastwood behind this it's sure to have the passion and soul required to carry it over the line. Pun intended.

Get ready for the Spike Lee backlash! Spike while promoting his dull WW2 movie Miracle at St. Anna publicly criticized Clint for Flags of Our Fathers. Now Clint has made a Mandela movie.....anyone else expect Spike to be a jerk-off again???
  • Curious Cat
notice how matt damon's golden boy smile lights up the poster while morgan freeman's back is turned. Nelson Mandela or the rugby captain of relative anonymity? Hmm, let's put the rugby guy up front..... not so much
  • Name
    Looks real lame.
  • Ashitaka
It sounds like Freeman is talking like...Morgan Freeman. I don't know if his accent is convincing enough.
  • john
Yes very much so. Morgan Freeman and matt damon have done their homework and practised the sa accent. Well done to both.
  • Octoberist
It could be me, but I think that Matt Damon - who does have a lot of fans and admirers - doesn't get enough love from the geeks and fanboys?
  • gracefulfailure
The film looks bland and uninspired.

Eastwood has taken the muddy and unimpressive visual aesthetic of Gran Torino and applied it to South Africa, which apparently was hit with a large case of "the overcast."

I really hope Clint knows where he's going with this one. As of right now, I'm rather turned off by the entire thing.

Can't really do better casting than Freeman for Mandela.
  • There just seems wrong that an Eastwood/Freeman/Damon movie takes place in South Africa. I know this kind of american film imperialism happens all the time but for some reason I con't get over it this time.Is it that Mandella is too much of a legend?
  • They couldn't find South African -- or even Australian or British -- actors to play these two leading roles? Like others said before, the accents are laughable, which is a shame b/c it sounds like a good story. Poor casting choice that seems designed only to pull in an American audience.

Fairly average trailer on the whole. First impression of accents: Damon = spot on. Freeman = jury still out. Very good move not giving too much away - I assume they're banking on most people in the US not knowing who actually won. It's been 14 years and I am still gutted by the result.
  • G Darling
Of course we are gutted - and the results of the next several World Cups - wonder if the film mentions the ABs' food poisoning the night before.
  • FedUp10
First of all i am South African and those accents are BAD! Seriously they could have used SA actors for this. Secondly dont you think this dog has been beaten to death by now... i am so sick of all these rah rah movies about South Africa overcomming apartheid, and have the stories portrayed in the movies are made up. I dont see how they could have made a movie about us winning the world cup in 95 unless there has been another made up story line about us bad whites!

This guy would love to go back to appartheid. I cna see it in comments!

I am also South African... an Afrikaner in fact... and I think those accents are GOOD. Compared to the lame African accent Leonardo Di Caprio did in Blood Diamond, Matt Damon nailed it.

2nd of all, I remember that day in 1995 so well, and coming from an anti-apartheid Afrikaner family, I felt very proud. I've been living in South East Asia as an English teacher for a few years. When my wife and I returned to our beloved South Africa, we were confronted on how negative South Africans have become. I have never seen so much anger and resentment between people before. Especially after seeing how loving groups of people can be towards each other in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

I became negative myself... I shut out any form of South African patriotism and emotional sentiment attached to our country. I was very cynical about watching Invictus... but, I don't know... it just grabbed me... and believe me... I fought it... But, it made me feel very patriotic. I think... in general... excluding what really constitutes a good film... for the general South African populace, a film like this is necessary.

Victory meets Last King of Scotland?
  • Sean-Paul
It's a story that needs to be told, especially to a clueless American audience.

I am looking forward to this film. Its a story that is close to my heart as it is one of the few events I can actually rememeber from growing up in South Africa during that time. It's a stroy about unity and about bringing a nation together the book is amazing. I have high hopes for the movie. And maybe having well known people in the lead roles is just a way to bring the story to more people. Im excited.
  • Curious Cat
in the poster - why is matt faced forward and morgan faced backward in the background?
  • Dawn
Loved the book....can't wait for the movie (yes people, READ a book), I wonder at Matt Damon, he's a little small for a rugby player, but the movie looks like it will give most clueless americans a taste of history!
  • check out www.invictustours.com - capturing the history of apartheid and rugby in South Africa.... watch the movie then go see it all firsthand. neat idea indeed!
  • UndercoverBlonde
As a South African this trailer makes be really proud because of the importance of the story they are telling. If i can get over Freeman butchering the accent (shame he tries) or Damon being 30kg lighter than Franscois Pienaar then people who aren't from South African should be able to. I think their choice in actors gave this movie the potential to reach people who wouldn't see it if it was just a south african cast I mean how many people really saw Tsotsi?

If Eastwood chose the title based on the poem, then the title is a slap in the face to Mandella. Mandella was a Christian and the Invictus poem is anti-God secular humanism.

but that would be no suprise from Eastwood

Just saw the Invictus last night. I'm not a big Eastwood-the-director fan at all. Yet, I must say this last production is thoroughly enjoyable and more. All of you up there dissing Morgan Freeman: he's superb as Madeeba, the guy is like a chameleon channeling Mandela: gait, speech, etc, even when he does nothing and sits watching the game, you can feel Nelson's there, not his Hollywood rendition. Damon plays this rugby captain a bit one-dimensionally, as it shd be. Sure it's simple, straight-forward cinema, but it's quite well driven to the point, using Eastwoodian themes: old/young pair, black/white, etc. Not so many white directors touch the subject and CE must be commanded for that. Also the sport metaphor as the most unifying principle for humans at this stage of their fastidious development toward universal brother/sisterhood is well deployed and made me (a sports non-fan) realize how important it is. Obviously, Clint preaches for a great b&w reconciliation (not only in South Africa...) and he can't be blamed for that, even if it feels a bit heavy-handed sometimes. It's a very honest and sincere film.

I just saw the movie and am a former south african, Morgan Freeman,Damonastwood really did a fantastic job. I have followed Clint Eastwood from childhood and watched the movies he directed, I woud say he out did himself on this one, hope they all get Oscars. I really miss home after watching this movie. Once again congrats to Morgan Freeman, Damon and Clint Eastwood.

This movie is should be about the courage& determination of the New Zealand All Blacks after maliciously poisoned by a mysterious waitress, still managed to go into three overtimes & lose as most of there players were sick. The Springboks V All Blacks is probably one the best & toughest rivalries in any sport. This result was good for Apartheid but I am sure the bookmakers played a part in it. NZ All Blacks are the only country in the rugby world that has a winning record against any country they have played including S.A. See you in NZ for World Rugby Cup 2011.
