Billy Ray Taking Turn At Gears of War Screenplay

gears_of-war_dude

Earlier today, Russ told you that Billy Ray will be writing a ripped-from-the-headlines movie about Captain Richard Phillips vs. Somali Pirates. That’s not Ray’s only new writing gig, however, as he’s also taking a crack at the Gears of War movie. Last we heard, director Len Wiseman was collaborating with Wanted scribe Chris Morgan on the project, superceding an ill-liked Stuart Beattie draft. Like that fellow with his One Red Paperclip, this sounds like a constant series of uptrades.

So, how did Billy Ray get the gig?

I’d imagine it’s a case of who he knew, not what he knew. Ray has been working with director Wiseman on Motorcade recently, and it looks like that must have been a fruitful and pleasurable experience for the two of them to choose to do it all over again.

I agree with Russ’ position that Ray is a very talented filmmaker but that the films he shares scriptwriting credit on, which is to say those he didn’t direct himself, turned out less well than those he saw across the finishing line himself. All the same, I think it would be completely pointless to wish for one second that he’d ever take up directing Gears of War from Wiseman. Besides… doesn’t he have better things to do?

I would imagine that Joseph Kosinski would be the fanboy’s choice for the Gears of War gig after his phenomenally popular TV commercials for the games. Myself… I guess I’d have to get a better idea of what Gears of War really entails before I could make a qualified judgment. Something about pressing buttons and things going bang, right? You can tell me if the man behind Breach, Shattered Glass and bits and pieces of State of Play and Flightplan is a good candidate for the Gears of War script or not.

I do know that the game features characters called things like Marcus Fenix, Dizzy Wallin and General RAAM. That must make script meetings a real barrel of laughs.

Story read in Variety.

I thought for a second Billy Ray Cyrus was up for the lead as Marcus. Thank god :P

i even thought that too LMAO
  • Needs to be CGI.
The graphics from the game (with MINOR adjustments) will suffice.

you mean they should cast the Rock as Marcus?

I do know that Billy Ray wrote an amazing 9/11 script called 102 Minutes, which basically chronicled the chaos that occurred inside the Twin Towers between the time when the first building was hit and when the second building fell. It was a really great script. I think it even made the Black List a few years back. It was an adaptation of a book by some NY Times reporters, I believe.

I think Billy Ray is a great writer when it comes to adaptation. Not so sure when it comes to coming up with fresh storylines. But I'd pick him over hacks like McG or Akiva Goldsman any day.

Michael Bay needs to direct Gears of War.
  • Michael Bay needs to STOP Transformers 3! PLEASE do it for the fans!
  • FreakCLAW
Hell no... That is the dumbest option I have heard yet. Have you even seen Transformers 2? This movie needs to be dark and engaging. Not just random sequences of explosions. Plus Michael Bay would probably try to make it PG-13 and that would just plain ruin it out of the starting gate.
I would vote for Danny Boyle.

have you even played Gears of War? It's right up Bay's alley. I highly doubt GoW is the pinnacle of story telling, in fact it's nothing more than "Big tough manly military guys kill everything and then blow up underground tunnels." Gears, while extremely enjoyable severely lacks in the story department and the characters are so 1 dimensional they make a stick figure resemble something so depth defying you have to invoke MSUGRA to properly explain the dimensions in which they inhibit.

The movie doesn't have to be exactly like the game... I have played it.. a lot... and I think that they could develop the characters and make it a really incredible story. You might disagree but I think that Michael Bay is a hack that depends on some really basic but overused directing tactics. I mean.. I loved Bad Boys... but I don't want this to be just another thoughtless loud Bay movie. It's probably a pretty moot point though. Bay would cost too much.

GoW is God of War...Gears is what you should put.

Why Danny Boyle though? He only made 28 Days Later from what I know of, he doesn't strike me as the realistic and gore type of person for the job? I do agree with you though, Michael Bay just needs to stop with Transformers. Either way I wouldnt want him to even try and pick up Gears of War, it's like giving PBS (Sesame Street) the rights to like God of War. Get the picture?

Danny Boyle also did Trainspotting but I would be looking for the kind of direction that came from Shine or 28 days later. Shine was a super under-rated sci-fi flick with a great soundtrack. Really the closest thing in a movie that I have seen to the spectacular Gears commercials. I think it was Fox Searchlight but if you haven't seen it and you like sci-fi it is a movie you shouldn't miss. Boyle would also keep it from getting anything lower than an R rating which it obviously should be. If kids want to see the movie they'll see it anyway, but this is an adults game and should remain an adults movie.
  • I have no good experience with games adaptation, except with this one. Max Payne Movie SUCKS. They left behind the all game (that deep, dark, and black police story). The story was like... i dont know, McFarlane story maybe...
Gear of War dont have the same content or script, i think Max Payne had more potential, but is not good enought it seems to make a good movie...
So, in my opinion....Dont touch the game please!(as gamer and movie addict!:D)
  • FreakCLAW
You have to wonder if they will go with a live-action or CGI approach. I can't think of anybody cool enough to actually play Marcus so I hope they do CGI
  • adE
Mickey rourke as marcus would be awsome, but that will probably never happen. I'm still not sure if they should go ahead with this, done right it could be as big a hit as d9. I just fear the studio will fuck it up
