Sony Pictures Classics isn’t likely to put money into an awards campaign for Sam Rockwell for the sci-fi indie Moon, but that isn’t stopping director Duncan Jones from getting behind a grassroots fan campaign to get the actor nominated. Does Rockwell deserve to be nominated for his performance in Moon? Many critics praised Rockwell in reviews earlier this year, and I would personally like to see him get recognized in some capacity come awards time. SPC is taking the more conservative approach (what else is new — but seriously, Carey Mulligan is the much safer bet, so it makes sense) and Jones is trying to spread the world himself, and get fans involved.

How can you help? If you happen to know an Academy member, please tell them about the movie and Sam’s performance, and try to get them to see the movie. Chances are many of you don’t know an Academy member… for those of you who don’t, please head on over and sign this online petition asking the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to consider Moon. Also, since Duncan is very active on the social spaces, he’s asking people to tweet a link to the petition and include the hashtag #samrockwelloscar. You can listen to Jones’ appearance on LAGenX Radio talking about the grassroots campaign, embedded after the jump. A fan-made poster for the effort is also included below.

And here is a fan created award poster created by magnulus:

  • Petition signed. Tweeting away. Sam absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination.
  • mchops
    Sam's the man.
  • SgtDoakes
I signed that bitch faster than a teenage girl could jump on Robert Pattinson's cock.
  • eightslicesofpie
    Sam Rockwell's the man. Signed.
  • Moon blew me away, primarily thanks to Rockwell's performance. I hope he gets a nom as he deserves it. The way he separated the two selves was brilliant.

Moon is an amazing film, one of the best this year.
  • This is one petition I'm glad to sign.
  • Signed and a comment added to it, too. He and Jeremy Renner were just absolutely brilliant in their respective films this year. I would love to see Moon get a nod for Best Picture, too. Possibly even Best Director for Mr. David Bowie, Jr.
  • CaraZ924
Agreed. I have yet to see Moon, but after seeing 'Hurt Locker' I want nothing more than to see Jeremy Renner get an Oscar Nomination.
  • Josh
Renner will likely get a nomination. If the Academy sees Moon, I think Rockwell can get in.
  • GreatBigLion
I am behind this 100%. The only performance I've seen this year that matches this one was Jackie Earle Haley in Watchmen.

    Signed.

It should be between him and Sharlto Copley from District 9.

Compared to the past decade, 2009 has been a good year for film. There is still a lot of crap being released, but it seems as if the studios are noticing that they need to produce quality films to earn our money.

    Signed! Keep spreading the word!
  • Pat
Sam is LONG overdue for an Oscar nom. And Moon's his best role probably.
  • overwatch
oh yeah, they should start a campaign for Sharlto Copley as well.

they should start a campaign for sharlto copley as well.
  • Sam is one of the most remarkable actor's I've ever met. I'll never forget it. Was on set of the film Betty Anne Waters, and I got to speak with him WHILE HE WAS IN CHARACTER. One of my favorite experience of the past year. Sam is a brilliant character actor, ghosts of different people seem to inhabit him during his performances. The man will GET an Oscar during his career, its just a matter of time, he is far too talented not too.

I want (500) Days of Summer to get a 'Best Original Screenplay' nom...I think it was original, wasn't it?
  • Huffy
See, this is what I hate about the Oscars: it isn't about who gave the best performance or who made the best film. Its about which studio pumped the most money into their campaign and which actor holds the most clout in Hollywood. As great as Rockwell is he'll probably get snubbed because A) Science fiction isn't a "serious" genre in the eyes of many academy members and B) he isn't George Clooney. I just wish it could be about who gave the best damn performance in a particular year and not which A-Lister is due recognition for getting snubbed 20 years ago, or simply because he's an A-Lister.
That out of the way, pention signed. Its a long shot but Sam has been doing great work as a character actor for years and never being recognized for it. He deserves his place in the sun.

i'm not sure he deserves to win but a nomination would be cool if only to prove that people watched it. which they should because it's amazing.
i think i'd prefer Tom Hardy over Rockwell - and that's only of the top of my head.
wat are the rules for a getting a best actor nom? would Michael Fassbender have been eligible last year? or Toni Servillo?
  • Mza
He can get best supporting actor for this too ;)
  • drewbstew
Agree in full with GreatBigLion. I'd love to see Jackie Earl Haley and Sam Rockwell both get nominated for Best Actor. Will either get nominated? Probably not. But I'd love to see it happen.
  • Name
The Cove to win everything at the Oscars next year !..
  • Dayna
Moon was fantastic. Rockwell was too. Like Fassbender (Fish Tank/Hunger performances) - they deserve nods on very high scales as Melissa Leo did for Frozen River. Such a corrupt and morally bankrupt industry now so I doubt it. Be thankful someone is funding the smaller stuff so we can see some acting vs CGI...
  • DougO
Rockwell should get nominated for best actor AND best SUPPORTING actor for the same film! HA! Is that technically possible?
