jackie_earle_haley_and_sinestro

Probably the most disappointing thing about Green Lantern is that the protracted and delayed production is going to ensure, without any doubt, that director Martin Campbell can’t be in charge of the next Bond film and turn that franchise round again (for the third time).

It’s not all bad news, though. On the plus side, a new rumour has pegged Jackie Earle Haley for the role of Sinestro in the picture. You may recall that he’s the mentor character that might just turn out to be a baddie (if they don’t save that for the sequel). The same unnamed gossipmonger has Superman down for a cameo role in the film, which sounds like a wild and unlikely idea but the character was in at least one draft of the script and since Marvel’s multi-picture mashup scheme, I wouldn’t be surprised to see DC try a similar tactic.

On the other hand, this particular use of Superman could be motivated by back and forth over the rights to the character as per the ongoing legal issues.

I like this Superman rumour because it means another silly season of speculating on the character’s casting is about to start all over again. What sport! Brandon Routh? DJ Cotrona? Jim Caviezel? Zac Efron?

A cameo would at least be a safe-ish way to test out the casting of a new Superman with the public and the internets before committing the actor to a full-on starring role.

Since his grand return in Little Children, Jackie Earle Haley has been signing on to franchise and high-profile genre pictures left right and centre. I guess he knows all too well what it’s like to suddenly drop off the radar and find roles hard to come by, so I wouldn’t blame him for getting some serious fat in his piggy bank while he can. It would be nice to see him do something else too, though, far away from the more stylised worlds he’s been inhabiting lately. And no, Shutter Island doesn’t count - that’s going to be as stylised as they come.

Via Aint it Cool.

Seems like a logical choice. I'm in support of that.
  • Hope this turns out to be true, I would definitely watch it.
  • LuMendz
Wow. Didn't expect that. Sounds awesome.
  • mangoshakes
I imagine the superman cameo will be a clark kent cameo. We'll probably just see the ring pass outside the window of the daily planet as the camera is focused on the desk with a name plate clark kent. Since the ring does bypass clark kent for hal jordan.
  • David
Yeah, it was always set up like that. Calling it a "Superman cameo" is a bit of a lie, since there will be no actor in the part. Calling it a "Clark Kent's Empty Desk cameo" is more truthful. That draft said the Lantern ring passed up Clark Kent because he was away and Hal Jordan was closer and available.
But the desk would still be kind of cool to see.
  • BrendonConnelly
    That's quite spoiler-tastic of you.
  • jasonb26
yer probably dead on with that one. excellent call.
  • terry
    Hugo Weaving = Sinestro
  • Hugo Stiglitz = Sinestro
  • Guest
hold on you mean German actor Til Schweiger who played Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz in Inglourious Basterds cause there is a actor named Hugo Stiglitz who was big star in the 70s and 80s in Mexico LOL.
  • Yeah but I think that guy is more recognizable by the name Hugo Stiglitz and not Til Schweiger. He would make a good villain.
  • Guest
yeah he is more recognizable by the name Hugo Stiglitz but his actually name is Til Schweiger.
  • AfroVince
i think the guy was making a hugo joke.
  • moviefan
i would be down with jackie if he ends up being selected as sinestro. Not my first choice compared to others like weaving, issacs, and a few more. As for the superman cameo, i know it was in the first draft of the film. But likely isnt going to be there. I doubt superman issues have been resolved yet. With all the legal stuff on going, and DCE pretty much saying no superman to its resolved.
  • Soundwave_17
JEH, is begininning to become my favorite Actor. Watchmen has always been in my top 5 Graphic Novel's, Freddy Krueger has always been my favorite Slasher Serial Killer & Green Lantern is one of my favorite DC character & the one thing they have in common now is Jackie Earle Haley. *on a side note Hugo Weaving would also be great..
  • Travis McGee
I just hope that they wait until the 2nd film before turning Sinestro into a villain. I really think that they need to exploit the mentor turned friend relationship that Hal and Sinestro shared.

I would also love to see a Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne cameo in the same manner as the Clark Kent cameo. Just have the ring pass both of them on it's way to Hal Jordan. That would further emphasize how strong willed and deserving Hal Jordan truly is.
  • The_Kid
Love the idea of Jackie Earle Haley playing Sinestro, but I hate the idea of a superman cameo, there's no need for one. Like you said it would just be like them trying to copy Marvel, there's no need for that.
  • Rockie
    this.............rules
  • ScanCase
I'm actually happy about this. Sinestro is a strange character that can be very hard to pull off in big screen adaption of the Green Lantern story. It's a very flamboyant character and seeing Haley being cast in the role kind of gives a feel towards how they're taking the entire tone of the film. Lets hope it works out.
  • i would only like to see zac effron be superman just to see the tons of internet protest. Be even better if people protested at a theater.
  • papasanchez
Like the casting if it goes through and if the cameo had a face, jim caviazel would be awesome. He's played Jesus for gods sake. Superman = messiah? Huh......huh? Superman won't be in this film.
  • Solid
I honestly wouldn't mind a tom welling cameo appearance.
  • Guest
hell no to tom welling cameo
  • Marco
I would love to see Tom Welling too for a cool nod, but as has been said above, it probably won't be any actor. We'll get Clark Kent's name plate instead. There is too much upheaval in the Superman franchise right now. Not to mention the lawyers would be all over their case.
  • Name
he's too small to be sinestro. jaskie earle haley 5' 5 sinestro 6'7.
  • Guest
his not even casted as Sinestro its a rumor plus he could wear a shoe lift to make him look taller. RDJ wore a shoe lift to play Tony Stark in Iron Man
  • mchops
Yeah he's way too small. Studio going the cheap route. Hugo Weaving would have been perfect for the role.
  • cheese over brains please
why don't they go after doug jones. he's abe sapien & silver surfer why not sinestro?
  • starscream9289
He looks like him, but I don't think I'd buy him as a villain. Hugo Weaving on the other hand...
  • That's not Timothy Dalton.
That's not Timothy Dalton at all.

Oh, and you should read the draft. Guy Gardner has a cameo as an american football coach, and Clark Kent is just seen inside the Daily Planet staring at the window.

    SPOILERS
Sinestro is good throughout the entire movie, and Parallax/Legion is the baddie, alongside Hector Hammond, who wrecks the air show, and almost kills his father. Which he does later on.

The script is great. With plenty of fanservice (White temples, from GL: Rebirth) and Hal being his snarky self. And Alan Scott makes an appearence as a major character.

    ...
Alan? He should be played by SEAN BEAN. He's got experience with Campbell, so why not?
  • Spence_Mgence
I actually have and read that draft you are speaking of. It really is a truly great script and I am really excited to see it put on the big screen. While I think Ryan Reynolds fits, I really could have seen Nathan Fillion in the role instead. Your opinion?
  • I honestly can't see Ryan being "I'm Snarky because I can kick your arse", but rather "I'm Snarky because I have no other option." Something I'm sure Fillion could pull off perfectly.

But who knows? Under Campbell's direction, this might as well be the year's Iron Man.

...Oh, but I can't stress this enough. Sean Bean would be my preferred Pipe, along with Timothy Dalton for Sinestro.
  • Sketch
I like your idea of Bean as Alan Scott. For those who have read the script, are we going to see more of the Corp. Like Kilowog, Tomar Re, Arisia, Salaak and etc?
  • mangoshakes
my understanding is the corps is fully in it. Not sure about Arisia and Salaak though. Doug Jones would be a good Salaak
  • Can't blame Jackie for taking this paycheck-- at least it's good casting to boot. He seems a great choice.
  • Octoberist
he's the ultimate underdog in Hollywood in my opinion.
  • Tim
Man that just ruined my weekend, I'd much have another Bond film by the same director of the last two. Maybe they'll hold off the franchise 'til he gets back? Sad that that's more than likely not going to be the case though.

I laughed at the idea of Jim Caviezel as Superman, seems like the perfect casting option.

Shutter Island more stylized than Watchmen or Nightmare On Elm Street? I wouldn't doubt it. Well he is the only reason Watchmen was even remotely watchable, hopefully they don't pull a Batman and write a script that can hold itself up.
  • Octoberist
Martin Campbell didn't direct Quantum of Solace; he directed Casino Royale and it's obvious in the two different styles. And i don't get your 'batman' comment. at all.
  • riverman
    John Waters as Sinestro.
  • Mr.Nil
No, No, No! He going to be a mini-baddie, can't Stanley Tucci do this?
  • cruzzercruz
I wish everyone would stop shitting on Quantum of Solace. The movie was amazing and a fantastic companion piece to Casino Royale.

    Jackie Earle Haley, fantastic choice.
  • mangoshakes
i figure the villain in Casino Royale would be a beast Sinestro too. can never remember his name, mads mikkenson or something. but haley is good too
  • musicsoup
Martin Campbell is good at introducing new Bond leads. Hopefully he'll continue the trend when the franchise is done with Daniel Craig.

The whole Marvel vs. DC things comes down to the simple question of what movie gets you more excited, The Avengers or The Justice League of America?

If you had to pick one. Would it be Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, etc. Or would it be Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, etc.

I, for one, was always more of a Marvel kid myself. The crossovers were always more exciting. A Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 movie concept is enough to make my head explode. DC never quite got me the same way, though admittedly, seeing Batman and Superman on the screen at the same time does give me the warms and fuzzies.

Oh, and Jackie Earle is in Shutter Island for all of 5 minutes.
  • mangoshakes
i'll take the JLA easy. but i'm a DC kid. and a batman/superman thing. i can imagine Supes landing at the top of the daily planet about to go in the door when a batarang flings into the wall next to him and he turns to see batman crouched on a roof fixture. mm. then they walk towards each other. man that'd be killer.
  • frelling_cute
Glad to see Jackie Earl Haley getting roles again. Mickey Roarke too. Hollywood just throws people away.
  • Octoberist
That's why I get upset when ignorant people take Haley, Rourke or even Downey for granted..For me, I'm very happy for these guys.
