Edge of Darkness Movie Trailer and Poster

edgeofdarkness_trailer_frame

Warner Bros. has released the trailer for Edge of Darkness, featuring Mel Gibson’s first starring role since 2002. Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale) directs the movie, which is a remake of the very highly regarded UK mini-series from 1985 that Campbell also directed. Sadly, the trailer mostly looks like a routine potboiler, but it has a few moments that shine through. Check it out after the break.

Originally Robert De Niro was cast as the character now played by Ray Winstone, so my first viewing of this trailer was all about reconciling how I’d once imagined De Niro working that role in comparison to Winstone’s work. I like Winstone a lot, and he gets a couple of my favorite moments in this clip.

And, really, things are going pretty well in this trailer as it sets up the story of Gibson’s murdered daughter, a possible conspiracy and presents what looks like an alliance between Gibson and Winstone. And then Gibson actually says “I’m a guy with nothing to lose,” and I’m taken right out of it. That’s a line you should only hear in a Family Guy parody of a film like this. But elsewhere the old Mel Gibson intensity is very much in evidence, especially in the trailer’s kicker line. (A consistent Boston accent isn’t quite as much in evidence, but I can look past that.)

The original mini-series had nuclear power and environmental concerns as motivating issues, and I don’t know if those carry through to this version. While Campbell and original producer Michael Wearing are part of this remake, original writer Try Kennedy Martin is not.

Warner Bros. has also released the poster for the film, which you can see below the embedded trailer. Edge of Darkness will be released in January 2010. Meanwhile, Martin Campbell should soon be getting to work on his Green Lantern film.

So I wonder if the last line of the trailer (Mel Gibson's line) should have been included in the trailer?
  • The last line was fine. Anyone who gets offended at it really needs to just chill, though I will say probably not the best thing for the general public, it does give the scope of the movie.

    ahh.. the angry man

"You'd better decide if your hanging on the cross, or banging in the nails"

Hell yes! I found the trailer to be great. I think it's the first time Mel has been in front of the camera since 2002 (Signs). Welcome Back!
  • bomberman
I forgot how much it rules to see mel gibson getting violent.
  • mangoshakes
def some clunky dialogue. though that "hanging on the cross or banging on the nails" line is sweet. and the directing on the action looks uber sweet. alright campbell, done with that. on to green lantern.
  • Henrik
I think DeNiro relised this might be a good movie and backed out then. He is done with good movies now. He is doing a film with Steven Seagal now.
  • Riggs has some salt in the pepper but can still drop one liners and kick some ass. I'm impressed.
  • Ignoring everything else Gibson looks badass in that poster, it's like he is staring into your soon to be dead soul and is totally smug about.

Damn, welcome back to being a badass Mr. Gibson. I really liked that trailer and even though I bet they just showed us all the action in the film, I'm still excited. It looks intense and feels like a smart version of Taken, but I hope that Gibson's murdering the basterds Liam Neeson style. The dialogue wasn't cliched at all, to me those lines sound cool and is the reason I watch films like these. Man, with Casino Royale and now this, Martin Cambell has dramatically shifted from being a decent director to being a phenomenal one. I can't wait for The Green Lantern just to see what he can do with a super-hero movie.
  • This looks awesome.
  • papasanchez
I remember the mini series. I was 4 and my parents told me I could watch it as long as I covered my eyes at the bad bits! I watched it recently and it's awesome! Hope the film does the job, lookin good so far.
  • riggs
that poster makes me think mel gibson with slick hair can pull off the punisher
  • Kyle C.
That would actually be badass. You could do it "Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns" style and have Gibson play an older version of the Punisher.
  • I love that poster!

Looks interesting. Kind of a Ransom/Conspiracy Thriller/Payback mashup. Martin Campbell is the kicker here.

What's up with the 50+ rage as of late?
Expendables, Taken and now this. I suppose there's nothing worse than a pissed off pops.
  • I've missed Gibson. Yes, he looked like he might have lost it a few years ago, but this looks good. And it has Danny Huston. I love his stuff.
  • Gibson as a loose cannon, awesome. Another movie where they try to make Bostoner's look tough, lame.
  • ScanCase
So this is pretty much Lethal Weapon 5 then? I'm starting to get a little tired of these revenge flicks. It's always some family member that gets killed and the grizzled hero has to uncover the truth about the family member. This feels like I've seen it before. But I'll still go see it due to the fact that Martin Campbell is directing.
  • Henrik
How is this anything like Lerhal Weapon? This character is nothing like Riggs at all. And there is no Danny Glover.
  • Man. Gibson and Winstone. Looks like a pretty formidable duo.
  • rant
The mini series is one of the best ever made in my opinion with perhaps THE best ending I've ever had the surprise to watch. Hope this does it justice.
  • lorettajohnson
very exciting. this might be mel's comeback year first the beaver and now edge of darkness.

hey mel i'm your Dark Beaver! ;)

    (kids dont read this one)
  • Fasten Your Seatbelts its Taken 2.0. Good to have you back Mel

It is really too bad Mel Gibson is a good actor, given the fact that he is an insane anti-semite. It really makes me debate myself whether I want to see his films or not.
  • sickofyouall
You are more of zealot than he is by the sound of things
  • quintushalls
No. It would be the same reaction I would think watching Roman Polanski movies after he raped an underage girl.
  • Hard for me to call Gibson anti-semite. I believe he is a man with character. Look, he probably understands the horror of war more than the average person because his acting methodology is to submerge himself in the character he plays. He did so when he produced and played the lead role in We Were Soldiers, which was about the battle of the Ia Drang Valley - a ferocious battle. That movie pleased Vietnam Veterans for its accuracy and for once depicting those who served in Vietnam as the true and honorable warriors they were/are. Gibson played Hal Moore, the battalion commander, who was first on the ground and last to leave. He spent every day with Moore during the shooting. Prior to shooting, Moore took Gibson "to introduce him to some of [Moore's] men." It was the cemetery at Ft Benning Georgia, where they were doing some early shooting. Moore led him from tombstone to tombstone telling him a story about each man. Then Moore turned to Gibson with narrowed eyes and said, "You will not embarrass any of my men."
Gibson gulped and said, "Yes sir."
I interviewed Joe Galloway (played by Barry Pepper) on Veterans Radio. Galloway said that pre-shooting Moore was worried because Gibson never asked him anything. But what Gibson was doing was absorbing both Moore and the battle like a sponge. That can affect a man if he has empathy.
So, who has not gone nuts in the past and lashed out at someone innocent just because they were handy. One hears constantly that Jews are responsible for wars, because they benefit from war. Yes, it is said constantly. I study history and pay attention to what is said by people from the left and the right.
Even if you don't believe something, in a moment of extreme stress you might angrily repeat it.
Gibson was stressed over a new war and who can blame him and who knows what else was going on in his life at the time.
Americans should all wear black robes because we all seem to be judges. God, I hate it.
  • babyjaypan
    looks awesome!
  • kolbe
    Looks really good
  • taylordubose
jesus christ! the fades/cuts to black over and over again??? really? i can handle a few but this is a bit too much
  • Pay Back 2?
  • Bull
If this is anything like the miniseries, this is really misleading the audience. Most people are comparing this to "Taken" which the miniseries is far from.
  • jrice73
For starters, I saw the miniseries on US tv (in syndication mind you) back in the middle eighties when I was 13 or 14. After THE DAY AFTER and THREADS, I thought this was one helluva prophetic and dangerous story. For people who have not seen the mini which was directed by Martin Campbell for the BBC, its not just a tough as nails Mel Gibson character killing people to get revenge. There's a mammoth speculative science fiction thread that runs through the whole thing about the future of humanity and its eventual extinction. Add in some mysticism about just what the planet we live on is and this was heady stuff when it was a mini. Hopefully Campbell won't lose that edge.
  • darkloardpiggy
Is it just me, or does that poster look an awful lot like the Max Payne 3 cover for the August issue of GameInformer......O_o
  • I love that new Genre "Slightly-too-old-farts-kicking-ass".
First Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Eastwood, then Michael Caine and now Mel Gibson.
    Great.
  • Fir3Wolf
I've always been a huge Mel Gibson fan and will see this one for sure. I've seen all his movies and this one will be no different.
  • Mel Gibson in an action movie...really didn't think he'd do it.
  • Looking forward to this one.
  • NoName7579
    Gibson is back.
  • I just found it kinda hilarious that the person who cut the trailer would leave you with Mel Gibson saying that line. Ha!!
  • About time Mel Gibson comes back to the big screen. He's one of those actors, like Clint Eastwood, who will always be badasses regardless of age.
  • Name
    Oh FUCK YES.
  • Looks good. Apparently the bad guy turns out to be Mel's mullet, back for vengeance after years in the wilderness.
  • Fellini
    Conspiracy Theory meets Payback ;-)
  • Edge of Darkness
  • This looks pretty good, in my opinion the mentioned line only drew me out of it because of what was written about it. Otherwise I'm alright with it, I mean I understand the annoyance but still, it's alright. It's only one line :)
  • gee
    I don't like it,looks lame.
  • Jose
Welcome Mel... Looks so good. You're what the whole film industry has been all these years.... Way to go...
