Just ahead of the DVD and Blu-ray release of Gavin Hood’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine in “the rest of the World”, here’s a couple of video interviews I carried out with Hood and Wolverine’s original creator Len Wein. They’re short, but sweet, and Hood’s comments in particular brought a smile to my face. I like him a great deal.

Quite what Wolverine’s claws mean to you can be discussed in the comments section below. First of all, though, let’s hear the guys talk about that themselves, amongst other things.

As Hood pointed out, the Blu-ray is a faithful archiving of the theatrical version of the film. It looks absolutely astonishing - truth be told, much better than in it would have in many theatres, and definitely far beyond the leaked workprint. And what the cinema and torrents couldn’t offer you, the discs can - Hood’s compelling commentary track, some fun nonsense with Stan Lee and a dose of Len Wein’s sincere, one-of-us fanboyish charm in the supplements.

And on the high-def disc only, there’s also that IMDB Live Lookup gizmo that I think represents a genuinely enticing hint of where Blu-ray is headed.

Should Gavin Hood return for another Wolverine film, as has been rumoured (though only rumoured) I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed in the studio’s choice of man. I might, however, question the man’s choice of studio. Couldn’t they please just leave him to his own devices?

At a group Q&A just prior to these 1:1 interviews, I tried to get Hood and Lauren Shuler Donner to comment on the casting of ‘franchise characters’ in the film, such as Deadpool or the young mutants. It should come as no surprise that they both admitted, if not exactly stressed, the ’studio involvement’ in such matters.

The Wolverine discs will be hitting shelves in the UK and across Europe from next Monday. Those of you in the US can already swing by the store or futuristic kiosk device thing to pick one up. As per my previously published review, I’d say it’s worth at least a rental.

So you don't like Spielberg, but you loved T4 and you're a fan of Gavin Hood, the hack director of Rendition and X-Men Origins: Wolverine? :/
  • Isaaac
    Hood also made Tsotsi.
  • D
I know. I only mention his hollywood films, but i didn't like Tsotsi either.
  • Buster Gif
I don't think he loved T4 once he'd actually seen it but was just optimistic about it before hand.
  • provoice
Americans have a problem with the film Rendition because they don't have a problem with rendition. Slugs.
  • Once again, the mind boggles...

Amazing as it might look on Blu Ray, it's still an incredibly shitty movie.
  • Solid
No don't waste your money on this. It's just a weak ass version of x2 and blade 2. try again. It was done better when I was 16.

i just re-read your review...i'm thinking this has to be one of those cases where love for the people involved is so overwhelming that it blinds one from truly seeing what has happened. no foul committed, i've been there myself with spider-man 3.

there is no doubt that we all wanted this film to be remarkable, but the end result is just a fucking abortion. i don't blame the cast, that would be irresponsible and naive to the process of filmmaking. but:

-hood didn't demand more from his actors, almost like he was starstruck - shame on him for bringing so many embarrassing moments to this film, and probably leaving the editor quietly laughing to himself and pulling his hair out at the terrible options he had to choose from.
-the scriptwriters, whomever they may be, delivered one of the biggest & most contrived pieces of shit in recent comic-book adaptation history.
    -just fuck FOX forever.
-shame on anyone else who dropped the ball on this ridiculous film, and could've prevented it.

a rental could be accepted, but in all honesty no one should financially support this film any further, regardless of the very cool DVD/blu-ray options.

and for the record hood is waaaaaay off on the origin of the claws. it's an evolutionary 'darwin-esque' thing that has happened, not an emotional transcendence.

Hood can't be way off on the claws - he got to make the choice. This is his film not the comic we're talking about here.

ya ya, i meant that part in jest. i am well aware that an opinion cannot be wrong.
  • shadow
Yay! So now everyone can notice the godawful greenscreen work in the final sequence!
  • I can say one thing a cinema can offer me: a screen much bigger than even the largest HDTV. Nothing beats the cinematic viewing experience and don't even try to argue otherwise.

I won it at a college event, and I was very happy with it! There were a couple TERRIBLE CGI shots (Wolverine's claws in the bathroom. You'll know it when you see it...), but most were GREAT! Definitely worth free. :P
  • just got finished watching the film (on blu-ray, btw) for the first time. that movie was embarrassingly bad.
