Jon Favreau Will Not Direct The Avengers

avengers1a

Speculation has swirled about whether or not Jon Favreau would direct The Avengers for Marvel after he finishes Iron Man 2. Now we know the answer: he will not. And furthermore, Ed Norton will not appear in Iron Man 2. So there.

MTV talked to Favreau about The Avengers while he was promoting Couples Retreat, and his statement about directing the film was quite clear:

They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available. It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.  It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor. How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.”

Normally this sort of thing would be a non-issue, but there was plenty of reason to suspect that Favreau might take the job, not least because he has expressed interest in doing so. Now the wild speculation can begin: who will Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios hire to helm the film? Marvel has made some interesting directorial choices of late (Kenneth Branagh for Thor) so it’s not like there’s reason to expect a hire along the lines of Paul W.S. Anderson.

Finally, we more or less knew that Ed Norton would not be making a cameo in Iron Man 2 (persistent rumor suggests Bruce Banner or the Hulk might appear in the film, to set up The Avengers) and Favreau agreed that Norton is not in the film.

interesting. i wonder who has the chops to direct a team based film.
  • djoser
Brian Singers work in the Usual Suspects seemed like a good prep to wind up tackling the X-men franchise.

Id have confidence that he could handle an ensemble cast - it seems to be what he does so well, as supposed to , say, that Ubermensch reboot.
  • Depending on how Thor works out, I'm not too negative of Branagh getting the Avengers-gig...
  • Spoonz
that's like saying "if player X is the NFL mvp this year then I'm not opposed to him being on my team next year" well no kiddin.
  • jasonb26
i'd say get someone entirely new to do the ensemble films, & let the individuals have their own directors.
  • mchops
very disappointing to say the least. favreau would have been great for the avengers.
  • teddy123
I kind of wished Norton and the hulk were still there... I think the combination of Norton and Downey Jr. playing off each other would have been great... even having the Hulk as the villain wouldn't have been bad...
  • goobity
I don't know quite why, but Peter Jackson (and Philipa and Fran on the writing team) would likely kick a whole bunch of ass on this. He seems to get the whole 'Epic Scale' thing, that few current 'name' directors can pull off. I'd suggest Del Toro, but he's spreading himself a bit thin of late...
Avengers deserves to be BIG - both in terms of story and visuals. Who else could pull it off?
  • mchops
James Cameron could pull it off IMO.
  • I say Guillermo del toro if he wasn't busy for the next 20 years.
  • Guest
sorry to say this but no to Guillermo del toro
  • lest78
I agree, Del Toro brings too much of his own (brilliant) visual style, which isn't needed in this film. This is a film in which a director needs to step in and be faithful to the Marvel look, not bending the Marvel look to suit their style.
  • fanboy_d
Joe Johnston should direct it, seeing as how it should essentially be a Captain America sequel, what with the first Cap movie being WWII-set...
  • thrillhouse
I'm aware that this is a really bad idea, but give Tarantino the Avengers and a mound of coke and you'd certainly have a movie.
  • A superhero movie where they just talk pop culture 80% of the time?? Might as well give it to Kevin Smith. At least you admit it's a bad idea.
  • matthewstarr
I wouldn't mind Paul Anderson. If you take out the W.S in the middle and add a T.

Who can direct action and drama these days? Christopher Nolan, Kathryn Bigelow, James Cameron. Not too many.
  • Name
a james cameron directed avengers movie would be epic... but it would probably require a near 500 million dollar budget...
  • RosanatorDA
camerons not going back to superhero movies. he already did aquaman.
  • Phontsolo
    Classic line bro! haha
  • isavedlatin89
    Two Words.

    KATHRYN. BIGELOW.

    Good call my friend
  • outuendo
Oh so Norton isn't going to be in Iron Man 2 eh? Just like Sam Jackson was absolutely not going to be in the first one? I'll believe it when i see it.
  • mchops
I don't think we'll see norton, which sucks.
  • Guest
Matthew Vaughn should direct The Avengers
  • Michael Bay is directing.

    /wrist
  • lelandbrungardt
that may be my favorite comment ever.
  • Quite simply the greatest /film comment I have ever seen. A big thumbs up from this guy.
  • Rick_Dickulous
Whats with the Paul WS Anderson hate? Seriously he's the only guy ever to make decent video game flicks...

He's no genius but there's plenty of less talented people to pick on.
  • Goobity
Like Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat?!

    Fuck. No.

The Avengers deserves a good translation into film.
  • CyT
Res Evil and Mortal Kombat have their place though. I wouldnt say they are great films .. but they are enjoyable and watchable. Unlike say .. The Core or something.
  • He's totally right about the mixing of the tech and the supernatural elements being a hairy issue. Could be a case of 'double mumbo jumbo' which doesn't tend to work in movies. Eric Snider holla.'
  • hoooyah!
i didn't understand the problem with mixing the tech world with the supernatural i mean... it's Iron Man... who's his nemesis? the Mandarin. Those two basically symbolize the eternal struggle of technology vs. mysticism.
  • jasonb26
good. fav is not the god that ironman has made it seem he is. ever since that pompous dinner for five bullshit, i just cant get into the guy. yes, IM was successful, but it was beyond too formulaic for me. there was absolutely no true danger in that film. the avengers deserves someone better at the helm.

now, who should do it? i always thought james cameron would be the perfect guy to pull all these worlds together, but there's no way in hell he'll do it. maybe brian singer, i dunno, i'll have to ponder this one.
  • Daniel
Steven Spielberg! Who's more suitable to direct such film than the best action director in the world?
  • Depending on the script, if its gonna go top heavy action, then go Tony Scott. If there's a plan to go top heavy with character driven story, then hand it off to Oliver Stone. On the other hand, if we were talking about A-list directors doing Marvel projects, how about Tarantino doing a Wolverine sequel with subtle nods to Kill Bill? Spielberg doing Magneto.
  • Daniel
    Tony Scott? Oh, God no!
  • Tarantino... doing... WOLVERINE?!
Holy shite, Charlie. You proposed the best idea to Hollywood EVER!
  • thorofthunder
    Fail post of the day.

    I so sad.
  • The_Kid
I just imagined the best Avengers film ever, Speilberg directing with each indiviual director producing, Favraeu, Letterier, Branagh, and Johnston all working to make the greatest superhero movie ever.
  • musicsoup
    that
  • lest78
    How about Zack Snyder?

Admittedly I wasn't the biggest fan of Watchmen, but I dug 300 and Dawn of the Dead.

Aside, I am currently working on his next flick and from what I see he is a guy who really gets into what he is doing and it would be interesting to see what he would do with The Avengers.

300 and Watchmen prove that he clearly sticks to the source material.

But I am disappointed that Favs is out of the Directors chair.
  • CyT
I was thinking Zac. Im not a fan of comic book movies much so maybe Im the wrong person to day, but I really dug Watchmen for its style and design. He does seem to lack the nack of characterization though...
  • Moose
    HELL NO!!!!

Zack Snyder is the last person on earth who should direct this. his films are all style and no substance.
  • Bingo, they are vapid moving pictures, nothing else. Though to be fair how much substance is this movie going to have anyway.
  • David1225
Let's just hope it isn't Bryan Singer. Horrible. Truly horrible.
  • musicsoup
The reason Norton isn't in Iron Man 2 seems rather obvious. We've already had a Hulk movie. Thor is next. And if you look on IMDB, Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is in the credits. Clearly, they're trying to set up Thor, since it's the next film in the 'series.' And you can probably bet that Captain America will appear in Thor. Then we'll get Captain America. And then BAM! The Avengers will jizz all over our faces. It's actually quite brilliant, and fills me with a fuzzy feeling. I welcome the jizz spraying. Just sayin.

As for who should direct The Avengers, I agree with Spielberg. A lot of people will try to argue over his recent 'failures' as why he shouldn't direct. But if you think about it realistically, in order to make what will likely be the biggest movie ever (suck it, Avatar) - you need someone who can handle action, actors, emotion, depth, structure, realism, surrealism, etc., things that only an experienced, master filmmaker can do successfully.

Or Ridley Scott could do it. That would probably be as awesome.
  • musicsoup
And I just got a flash of pure comic bliss -- just imagine how The Avengers first teaser will make you feel. I'm almost in tears thinking about it.
  • The_Kid
I know right. It's gonna be amazing, I can't to see just the teaser, I'm still interested who's gonna get the role of Captain America. I love how Marvel is setting this up just like they would with a big comic storyline.
  • I love how confident that Russ is in Norton not being in IM2.
  • CyT
Give it to the Wachowski brothers. They are good with big budgets and can make a team of stereotypical characters weave through a cool story line. Would be rather interesting. And I also really dug V for Vendetta so they have an idea on comic book flicks.
