The main UK poster for Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus falls somewhat short, I feel. There’s more than a hint of Harry Potter about it and a definite waft of The Golden Compass too. Thankfully, however, it isn’t any longer the only UK poster for the film and not only is the new one better, it’s actually pretty bloody amazing.

Better almost late than never, I suppose. See the new poster in all its glory after the break - as well as a short film about the misadventures of the original poster.

Here’s the new poster in all of its glory. What do I have to do to get one of these for my wall? Note that I don’t have a single movie poster hanging anywhere so far - but I think I could be about to change that.

The poster was sourced from the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus Support Site. If you enlarge it and take a good look at the details, you’ll see there’s an awful lot going on. Rather like the film, in fact.

And here’s the promised short film that documents a day of direct action on behalf of the good doctor and his splendid Imaginarium. There’s pretty people, passionate reactions to Johnny Depp and the odd foot in mouth.

I’m amazed by some of those reactions, but more amazed - shocked even 0 that a film with so much obvious appeal is getting relatively short shrift in terms of distribution and marketing. Fair play to those poster campaigners though, who seemed to be having a lot of fun as well as lending support to something they were passionate about. I wish I had more of that in me, sometimes.

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus opens this Friday, October 16th, across the UK. On December 25th, New York and LA will be getting the film and if the demand is noticed, the release will then spread.

  • Good lord that's a beautiful poster.
  • Joe Nickenbacher
is it just me or should Heath's name be more prominent in the poster? As a sign of respect, and as a selling point
  • jank
if it's put on there as a selling point then it is no longer a sign of respect.

he has top billing and the most prominent (besides lilly cole, of course) picture. I think it works just fine like this. the poster itself is something I could see in an art gallery. stunning.
  • Looks like a ripoff of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Imporium to me. 'Course, what movie isn't?
  • simmy25
what movie isn't a ripoff of Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium? You're kidding me right?
Starting with the fact that Mr Magorium is a ripoff of Willy Wonka
  • Djoser
this movie could hardly be further from magorium, or willy wonka for that matter.

You really do owe yourself the favor of seeing some of terry gilliams other films to know that he's got heaps more vision than most any filmmaker alive.

I and many gilliam, depp, ledger & tom waits fans are extremely excited about this - mainly b/c of the opportunity to see gilliam's unleashed imagination, once again.

But also b/c he creates fully realized worlds, w/unforgettable characters.

I really can't imagine why on earth this isn't getting a wider release automatically. SO many marquee names on it!
  • Who is this Terry Gilliam chap you speak of? He makes movies you say? Why, thanks for the tip! Maybe I will rent one on my VCR.
And yes, I still say that every movie ever made is a ripoff of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. Why? Do you feel that statement was made in haste? Perhaps I'll rethink my position on that one. Thanks!
  • Django
For once I agree w/ you: Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" is a CLEAR ripoff of Mr. Magoriums Wonder Emporium.

I really have no clue what they were thinking - and sans COLOR, no less!
    Hahaha

Really, ancient japanese shadow puppetry truly is a mockery of its CLEAR inspiration: the Blue-ray diskette w/ 3-D immersion interplay!
  • Chris_Hanson
That ginger in the poster looks like my wife.
  • quintushalls
    pics or it never happened.
  • Tommy
It totally looks like a Python animation!
  • Django
    Noo talking please~!
  • tmitch1109
This movie better get wide release. I will be so upset.
  • simmy25
I would LOVE if Terry himself had designed this!
is it to much to ask for?
  • jason
this poster remind anyone else of The Invisibles?
  • handsofblue
    It's comcastic!
  • yer
Dude we get it, you like Terry Gilliam.
  • Joe
At times like these, I hate living in America. Get it a damn wide release!
  • I'm sure it'll feel right at home once I've seen the film, but damn that title is horrid. So many friends who don't follow film closely have tilted their heads confused when I've mentioned Heath Ledger's new film... replies are either "Isn't he dead?", or "Oh yeah-- the Imagination or Something..." *Sigh*
  • Django
Captain Howdy, it's fair to say - if they're tilting their heads, confused- you might be hanging out with the wrong types of people.

Just focus on "terry gilliams new film. Y'know, the monty python & fear & loathing in las vegas guy. Jonny depp playing heath ledger & tom waits as the devil himself!" that'll win over just about anybody.
  • Exactly in what way is it 'fair to say' that I'm hanging out with the 'wrong types of people' based on the fact that 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus' is - without question - a stupid fucking title?
  • Aladdin Sane
Having seen the film, I can say that this poster fits the film much better than the previous incarnation that the promoters were using.
I'm sure that the North American poster will be crap compared to this one. I hear the eBay calling me...
  • Romero
Cheers Brendon!! Your a man of your word. i take it your laptops back up and running!?

Shame really, this poster would have helped the campaign no end! a scantily clad Lilly Cole with her distinctive humming ginge is guaranteed to catch the eye... (Well mine and most males anyway) though you will probably lose the Johnny Depp fans

Lets hope the film gets the attention it deserves! I cant wait to see it this Friday

Let us know when your in London again for a pint!

    Jolly Good Show!
  • Oliverlover

no one wants to hear what you have to say

i'll be damned if a another man tries to keep me down!
especially a pasty white 13yr old fan boy who's balls haven't even dropped yet.
  • hellojacktoad
What's that, Cunt? I'll knock yer fookin' teeth down yer throat, cowardly little prick. You think you're a big man, talking to people like that on a computer? Say that to me face-to-face and smash yer smug little cunt face in.
  • You truly are stupid.
  • django
this is not the sequel to magorium. In fact, it may be too dark for kids if thats what they're expecting.
  • lorettajohnson
thank you chrisgst & django. i guess i won't be taking the kids to this.

what about this antichrist movie peter keeps talking bout? maybe ill take them to that. they could use some religion

    ;)
  • FYI this is not a sequel to anything and truly you probably don't want to take your kids to this movie man.
  • zoey
    film loves lily cole.
makes me wonder if she's real.
