The Toy Story 3 media blitz continues! More and more, it seems that filmmakers are taking to Twitter to make major announcements, or just to share some cool stuff about the movies they’re working on. Today, Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich used the micro-blogging service to announce a few tidbits about the upcoming sequel to the Pixar classics. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

You can find Unkrich’s entire video announcement by clicking here, but Unkrich started off by saying that the Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2 re-release in 3D has been quite successful (the double bill has already grossed $22 million domestically), and as such, will be in theaters just a little bit longer. The double feature was initially only slated to be in theaters for two weeks. Unkrich says that the Toy Story 3 trailer (which you can watch here) is best watched in that venue, where you can experience the 3D elements as well.

Unkrich also announced two interesting bits of casting news. The first is that Kristen Schaal from Flight of the Conchords will be voicing a new character in the film. While Unkrich didn’t specify who she would play, he praised her talent and expressed his gratitude that she’ll be joining the project. Also, Unkrich answered a question that many of us have been wondering: Who will take over for the role of Slinky? Turns out, the task will fall to comedian Blake Clark. Slinky was previously voiced by Jim Varney, perhaps best known for his role as the titular character in the Ernest films, but he unfortunately passed away in 2000.

Finally, Unkrich confirmed what we already knew: John Morris, who played Andy in all the Toy Story films will play Andy again in the new film.

Below, a clip of Kristen Schaal’s work on The Daily Show.

    I love Kristen Schaal!
  • Andy III
You know, what's odd here is that these movies take a looooong time to produce and it seems odd that there would be anyone added at this stage in the game. You'd think she would have been locked down literally a year ago.

Ah...who cares...she's great. Love how Pixar picks people because they have interesting voices/characters, not because they're known names.

    What about Annie Potts?
  • I love Blake Clark. He's hysterical and his voice really does sound like Varney. I thought that was him I heard in the trailer, though.
  • ...Squirrel Girl?
