Bryan Singer Wants to Return to the X-Men Franchise

Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer says he wants to return to the X-Men franchise. Of course he does. While Singer has several projects lined up — a potential Excalibur remake/update, that Battlestar Galactica feature, and what should be his next, Jack the Giant Killer — the director now says he’s interested in going back to the superhero franchise with which he had such success in X-Men and X2. But what does that mean for the series?

Speaking at the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea, Singer said (as reported by THR):

I’m still looking to possibly returning to the ‘X-Men’ franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast.

This may be just fan-appeasing talk on Singer’s part. But taking it seriously for a minute, what film could he make? Based on everything we know, X-Men: First Class is the film that’s up next, with a spring shoot currently planned. Unless Singer bails on Jack the Giant Killer entirely, there’s really no chance he could take that on.

But there is that Wolverine sequel that may not re-hire Gavin Hood as director. And the related Deadpool film may need a helmer, too.

There’s also a possible fourth ‘real’ X-Men film. That would be the obvious place for Singer to return, as he could pick up the reigns of the franchise and start semi-clean. So many characters were killed off in X3, and so many remaining ones might want more money than Fox would be willing to pay, that Singer would have to either re-build his team or re-cast it. The former isn’t out of the question — rebuilding the team is pretty much the cornerstone of the X-Men universe — and would be a chance to get some more fun mutants on screen. But Singer did mention Hugh Jackman specifically, so look for that to be taken as an indication that he’d be interested in the second Wolverine film.

    He should do everything X-Men.
  • No... I think it would be better to do a spin-off movie that focuses on a X-Man character... please let's do a female superhero movie! I want to see a movie about STORM. I think Bryan Singer would do that one really well.
  • kingbry7
Because he handled Storm so well in the series...
  • That accent. What was he thinking when he let her do that? Ugh.
  • NorthPark
LOL. "Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning?"
  • wideawakewesley
Patrick Stewart was on Radio 5 in the UK today and announced that a script is in production that features Magneto and Prof Xavier
  • Would you happen to know of a transcript of that or a recording? I love Patrick Stewart.

As long as this franchise is in FOX's hands, I could care less. They have taken what was a good first film and great second film and turned the series into the Brett Ratner and magic bullet show. The series is utter shit now. Don't go back Singer, no matter how much you need a hit right now, this is not the way to do it.

On a side note, am I the only one who really wants to see what Bryan Singer's Superman sequel would have been like. I mean, people complain about the first one but it actually did a lot of great things to set up for a sequel, ex.-No more Lois relationship bullshit, no more Luther unless he can swim a million miles, and no more emo Superman. At the end of Returns, he finally found his place in life and was ready to kick aome ass.

The jump in qaulity between the first and second X-men films is huge and I think it would be the same with the Superman films. Give him another chance Warner. He even said himself that if given another chance, it would be the Wrath of Kaun of sequels.
  • papasanchez
I know you can't see me but I just stood out of my chair, clapped slowly and tried to hold back that single tear from my eye. Bravo dear sir, bravo.
  • Kyle C.
Haha, thanks! I just really feel that Warner never gave Singer credit for the world he created. It was the perfect tone for a Superman film and it closed the Lois and Luther story arcs perfectly if you look at Superman 1,2, and Returns as a trilogy. The next film would have been the real start of a serious franchise. Warner dropped the ball big time. When are people going to realize that Singer is a genius, even though Valkyrie was a bit of a misstep.
  • CC
Superman Returns raped my childhood. Damn you Singer for tearing down a great character. He delivered a mortal wound by convincing the world that an exciting Superman movie couldn't be made and topping it off with the stupidest soap opera twist ever of SuperBrat. Damn you Singer!
  • Travis McGee
I'm with you on the Superman Returns sequel. Singer did a great job in bringing Superman back to the big screen. I thought Routh was excellent in the role(s). And you are correct in pointing out how well Singer set it up for multiple sequels. WB dropped the ball on this one.
  • kudos
Singer did a great job in killing the Superman franchise right off the bat. We won't see another film for 20 years. Singer can pat himself on the back for that.
  • stb247
I agree to everything you just said.
  • wazuu
Im going to have to completely agree with everything you said. Except when you used the word "emo" come on dude are you in 6th grade?
  • Kyle C.
Thanks for agreeing but no I'm not in 6th grade. I'm 25 and have a college degree. Emo's just short for emotional. Get over it.
  • Dorthy
"I mean, people complain about the first one but it actually did a lot of great things"

Like lifting stuff, moping, clownish Luthor, lifting more stuff, frigid Lois, moping even more, and bastard child. The greatness just piled up. No wonder there'll never be a sequel. Bryan knows he screwed up big time.
  • Kyle C.
Your entitled to your opinion but I feel like a Singer directed Returns sequel is better than no Superman movie at all.
  • chops
The WB honchos have said we'll be getting a reboot. What's so hard to understand about that? A few Singer fans go on and on trying to drum a up a sequel that Singer himself has admitted will never happen. It's bizarre. Singer himself wants to move on and is looking for work, the diehards won't let him. It's Superman sequel failure or nothing. X-Men is not good enough for them. Battlestar is not good enough for them. A return to thrillers like Usual Suspects is not good enough for them. No, it has be a doomed sequel that almost nobody wants to see. A fan of Singer would hope for his success instead of wishing a sequel failure on him.
  • fanboy_d
Yeah, I desperately want to see Singer's The Man of Steel. I don't think the audience for that movie is vocal enough - still waiting on that Tarantino essay.
  • Kyle C.
Me too!!! I would kill to read Tarantino's supposed 20 page essay on the film, which he thought was brilliant by the way.
  • Dan
Most people would prefer Singer do an X-Men sequel rather than a Superman sequel. Seriously, is that even in question? lol. They would far, far, FAR prefer the X-Men sequel over a dreaded Superman sequel.
  • Kyle C.
Why? The way FOX is operating, it doesn't matter who is directing, they always fuck up films with their meddling. You really think that piece of shit Wolverine was Gavin Hood's original vision? I don't think so. The only director they wouldn't fuck with is James Cameron. Hell, they even ruined Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven which would have swept the Oscars that year if left intact.

At least with Superman, Singer can have some sort of creative control. But you sound like someone who probably liked X3 and Wolverine more than Superman Returns, am I right? Man, the hate against this movie astounds me!
  • I have to say that it would be a great move if Singer does come back.
  • theig
FOX has said they will never do another X MEN movie which is why we're seeing all these prequels and spin offs.
  • Kyle C.
FOX should go into the Guiness book of World Records for Film Studio who went from the best to the absolute worst in the sickest way imaginable.
  • chops
yep. The original cast is too expensive now. They're all top A and B actors who command big bucks. This is why I don't think we'll see more than one Avengers or Justice League movie. The cast gets too famous and has to get paid top dollar, so then the movie finances don't make any sense anymore.
  • mchops
he would be an improvement over that idiot that did X3.
  • uknowit
All of Singer's X-Men movies have been the Wolverine sequels, because Singer doesn't know the meaning of TEAM. Which makes him a good choice for the next Wolverine sequel and a poor choice for the X-Men, who are supposed to be a ... TEAM. Wolverine has had 4 movies now, and various X-Men have gotten to show up as his background players but it would be nice if the X-Men team actually got their own movie.
  • DeviousMrBlonde
brilliant, I feel like I should be falling asleep while someone drones on over a powerpoint presentation.
  • jasonb26
go watch the usual suspects, & see how he handles a 'team' perfectly.
  • lotf
Based on the bonus footage of the X-Men 1.5 dvd, I just think Hugh Jackman is like his favorite actor to work with (it's not blatantly obvious; just a strong hunch), next to Ian McKellen of course. I wouldn't say he's thinking of a spin-off more than a "real" sequel. He just really likes Hugh Jackman (and who can blame him? Am I right?).
  • David1225
No! Please god, spare us from Bryan Singer's tone-deaf storytelling and pathetic directing. He is the most overrated of the lousy "artiste" directors in Hollywood. Send him home to work at some insurance company.
  • Kyle C.
Wow, "the most overrated", really? I actually think he's held up pretty well. If you look at a lot of "artiste" directors these days, once they go "Hollywood", their films suck. Keiser Soze would be ashamed.
  • jasonb26
we knew this 2 months ago.
  • Solid
This just in... Tim burton returning to do batman 8!
  • CC
    lol Best reply EVER
  • fanboy_d
he needs to ignore x3 like he ignored superman 3 and 4. seriously.
  • Ahahaha
Because that worked out so well for him. It didn't confuse the audience at all. "So wait, Lois is married to someone else but she and Superman have a kid? When did that happen?" "Luthor isn't famous for trying to nuke California and never went to prison? But the movie tells us Superman arrested him for something and Luthor got off because Superman wasn't there to testify. That wasn't for almost nuking California?" "When did Superman become immune to Kryptonite islands?" "If Superman can reverse time, why did the trip take 5 years and why didn't he go back and stop the kryptonite island from ever getting made?" "What happened to Superman's giant plastic S-thingy that he threw on Zod? Couldn't he have used that on the goons beating him up on the island?"

Sequel confusion worked out so well.
  • agemoi
hahaha man i could not agree more. Superman 3 and 4 should be ignored but Superman Returns didnt know what it was. It was basically Bryan Singer trying to copy Superman 1 and 2 except taking all excitement out of it. It was crap. Superman is SUPER, not a fucking mopey bastard. The movies have never gotten it right and all singer did was make a bigger dent.

But if he wants to do wolverine.. go for it. It needs some of Singer. considering there really wasnt an "XMEN" movie ever made anyway. Theyre all about Wolvie =\
  • James Brock
I guess I'm just bitter, but him leaving after X2 really killed the X-Men movies. X3 sucked as did Wolverine. If he's going to return then he needs to do all the movies. But really, they don't need a Wolverine sequel. And a Deadpool movie? Thanks to "Wolverine," I don't see how that could really happen without rewriting everything.
  • bob124
Why did they kill off all the great main characters?! it really made no sense
  • Kyle C.
Because FOX + Ratner = EPIC FAIL!!!
  • Khuzud
Fuck him. It's because of him we got X3. Asshole.
  • GregoryV
Superman Returns felt unfinished, I would love to see Man of Steel. But you know, another Bryan Singer X-Men film would be awesome, total fan service.
  • spderweb
honestly, it's rediculous that celebrities demand more money as a franchise takes off. It's annoying and just rediculous. They don't ened more money. They should be excited they get to do that for a living. If i was in a superhero movie and was asked to return for the same pay, that'd be fine with me.
  • Name
was there any good about the singer x-mens? it was horrible... why would anyone want to see him helm another x-men movie that won't be even at par to how comics-to-movie franchises that are being made now?
  • frelling_cute
    Bryan....
Do the Logans Run movie while I am still young enough to enjoy it.
  • greggorybasore
I think it'd be really great if we saw all the current prequels that are in development come out (Magneto, First Class, Dead Pool, a young characters story [generation-x or new mutants] and a second wolverine prequel) first and then have Singer do X4. That'll give him so much fertile ground for doing a full on X-Men movie and give him the options to use the following characters:
    Wolverine
    Storm
    Cyclops
    Emma Frost
    Gambit
    Deadpool
    Beast
    Ice Man
    Rogue
    Sabertooth
    Mystique
    Magneto
    Toad
    Xavier

And so many more. For one thing we could finally get to see Scott and Emma as a power couple on screen. For another thing the prequels to come are likely to introduce more than enough new characters to compensate for the ones killed off at the end of X3. It would also give Singer and excuse to be involved as a producer on the prequels and keep a firm hand on the wheel of progress.
