You want the rights to some of the classic horror franchises to escape the clutches of Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes? Be careful what you wish for.

A lot of people really don’t like the Platinum Dunes horror remakes. Easy enough to understand; hell, as far as I’m concerned there are only two real Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, and they both have Tobe Hooper’s name on the director’s card. But people who will see and complain about the Dunes films won’t even touch the Saw franchise. (Which leads me to wonder just who is seeing the Saw movies to make them successful. Damn kids!) Where does that leave fans of a series like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which is now passing from Platinum Dunes into the hands of Saw’s Twisted Pictures? More to the point, will we ever have to suffer through the marketing for a Texas ChainSAW Massacre?

Variety reports that Twisted is closing in on a deal to take over the Chainsaw rights. And while the Dunes film were period pieces meant to be remakes with some sort of resemblance to the original film, Twisted’s plan is to make a modern version of the story…in 3D. The Grudge’s Stephen Susco will write. The company is partnering in the deal with Lionsgate, which has very happily released all the Saw movies to date.

For the two recent films, Platinum Dunes had made per-picture deals with Chainsaw rights holders Bob Kuhn and Kim Henkel. But Dunes couldn’t make a deal that worked this time, so Twisted stepped in. This deal will be for multiple films; one would expect that Twisted was able to make a multiple picture deal based on proof that it has leveraged the woeful Saw franchise into the little shop of horrors that could. Will we now see a new Chainsaw film every year for the next few years? Oh, lord.

  • What a winning combo. Grudge's screenwriter + Twisted Pictures + 3D!!!! = Sure fire oscar nom. Stoked!!!!!

Grudge had a screenwriter??? I thought they just copied and pasted the original Japanese film script into a microsoft word and took out what made it good.

Hey, they still had to run the original Japanese script through Google Translator first. Give them some credit. ;p

I know I'm going to eat some crap pie for this but... As a horror fan I truely love when a film like "Drag Me to Hell" elevates the genre, but I started out a horror fan because of the USA Up All Night movies and when WPIX 11 did their annual SHOCKTOBERFEST which featured a highly edited version of a mediocre horror film (usually an awkward sequel to a succesful franchise).
Because of those humble beginnings, I appreciate some schlocky horror and never saw sequels as bastardizations of the originals. I also feel that remakes and reboots should just be treated by fans as sequels and the r-words are more of a marketing tool akin to real estate developers making up new neighborhoods in NYC. I love Halloween III Season of the Witch. Good movie? No way. A horrible rift in the Halloween series? Debatable. But I also like that Saw comes out with a new horror entry EVERY HALLOWEEN! Like them or not (I'm not a fan, but I'll go see them if friends are going - cop out, I know), they're not watered down slashers of the 90's, they pack the theaters full of movie goers who are there for the macabre.
The "Grindhouse" era is chock full of awful awful movies but we look back on it as a hip, fun block of cinema that excelled in bad taste and I think that's what the Platinum Dune/ Saw pictures are. I hate to say everyone should lower their standards, but I will say it's fun for me to lower my standards for horror movies.
Did people complain when Hammer pictures re-treaded classics? I'm sure then people whinned but those films are appreciated nowadays.

I don't get it. Freddy, Jason and Michael Meyers all had annual sequels. When Saw does it, everyone acts like it's the only horror franchise that got milked for every penny its worth.

As for the new TCM, that idea sounds terrible.

The problem with this is statement is that the ones that were done back to back for all of these series are the ones people say are shit and are terrible.
  • THIS is why films like Trick R Treat and Paranormal Activity are a breath of fresh air for the genre. Saw was once upon a time as well...

agreed. i had no intention of seeing Saw, but it was on starz one day and seeing as i'm not one who enjoys horror films, i was surprised by how much i liked it. Saw 2 i didn't mind so much, but saw 3 just felt like a mindless gore fest and i haven't seen 4, 5, and definitely not 6 yet. Although last year my city was the lucky one that go the infamous Saw haunted attraction.
  • The problem with Saw is that it was actually better before the sequels. They make the original (which was at one point awesome with a kick ass ending) a part of the soul sucking machine that were the sequels. Maybe 15-20 years down the line time will have separated the original from its sequels and it can stand as a great horror film again.

Oh god. This is just going to turn into Torture porn. Like everything Twisted does. GODDAMN! I love TCM.

I just dropped on the saw franchise by chance i was supprised i enjoyed them 1to 4 realy like, was disapointed with number 5

Okay, now I liked the Saw series. I really shouldn't, but I hope every year that one will live up to the first's originality. A Texas Chainsaw remake could be good but it has to be in the right hands. And no 3D. That's just a gimmick nowadays.

i didnt know my palm could hit my forehead so hard

Man, thats like trading AIDS for Hep C.
  • God, I really wish the whole concept of 3D would just go away and never come back. Except maybe for major all-out events like "Avatar" (but who knows if even that will work for me).

Cheap little horror movies need to stay far, far away from anything 3D.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake is awesome, they are soooo much better than the original. The acting in the original was so bad and leatherface was not one bit scary. As for saw, why does everyone complain about sequels, I'm so sick of it, if you don't like them don't watch them...god, other people (like myself) see nothing wrong with them and like to see sequels of certain movies. Bring on Texas Chainsaw 3, 4, 5. Not in 3D though, I hate 3D.
