Duncan Jones’ Mute Faces Financing Difficulties

foreign_dreams_wip7

Ever since seeing Duncan Jones‘ indie feature directorial debut Moon, I’ve been waiting to see what he would do next, when he has a bigger budget and more resources. And we’ve been closely following every little detail of Jones’ next, a sci-fi thriller Mute, which has often been compared to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Now Duncan has told The Age that Mute is “mired in financing difficulties,” although the piece says that Jones is “sanguine about events.”

He believes that if there weren’t difficulties getting it made, then he must have got something wrong. ”Every problem,” he points out like a scientist happily positing a theorem, ”is proof that we’re planning a movie very different from the norm.”

Co-written with Mike Johnson (Sherlock Holmes), the story follows a mute bartender looking for his abducted girlfriend in a future Berlin. The villains of the piece are a creepy comedy double act. Jones has said that he hopes to find a budget of $25 million for this follow-up, a much larger sum than Moon’s $5 million price-tag.

If he made Moon for $5 million, I can't wait to see what he'd do with $25 million.
  • Downright criminal, Moon is going to be the most overlooked film of the year. Though I believe based off the last worldwide box office returns I saw for it Moon had made a pretty nice little profit. Also it is the kinda film I think could do very well on DVD and TV rebroadcast. I can easily see Moon as a big cult hit in 5 years.
  • Last I heard, they had made $6.5 million in revenue (not profit) off of $5 million. Not exactly that great of a profit.
  • After a search it looks like you're right and I was mistaken. Though it is my understanding that it is only opening in Australia now so it may a fraction but not much. I stand by my cult classic prediction.

Well, we'll have to see how it fares on DVD. Although Moon may have not made a profit yet, I think other studios will see what he can do with such a small budget. After all, Sony Pictures Classics doesn't really handle their releases too well.

I still don't get why Sony didn't get behind it, like they did with Usual Suspects, and give it a wide release. The movie could surely pull its weight against some of the bigger titles.
  • He made Moon for only 5 Mil?! My Mind has been blown, that's amazingly low. The movie is freaking great too, probably gonna be in my top 10 of the year.

Moon opened here yesterday (finally) in Brisbane, Australia.

Can't wait to see it over the weekend!

Why doesn't he just ask his dad for the money? Bowie could afford it, plus that's what parents are for.

Hey dad, can I borrow the station wagon for my date tonight and $25 Million for a movie?
  • I can't wait to see what he will do with $25 Mill if he gets it. Should be awesome.
  • hmm
Looks very blade runnerish from the concept art

i really can't imagine what this man could do with $25 mil - Moon was amazing. only thing that worries me about this film is the involvement of someone who wrote Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes looks dire. even with RDJ

oh and of course this was going to have financial difficulties!

First he makes a movie a little like Alien then he wants to make one a little bit like Blade Runner? I guess that means he'll be doing a Yakuza flick followed by a feminist road-trip movie followed by a couple of expensive flops before his re-invention of the Roman epic gives his career a second wind?

Sony's method of opening new films in LA and NY and then waiting to see what happens does not work! Moon came to 3 theaters in New Orleans, eventually, and didn't have a single tv commercial. Who goes to movies without a single tv ad? Everybody loved it! $5 million in revenue is pathetic! And they acted like they were thrilled with the ticket sales.

$25 mill? Why doesn't he just ASK HIS DAD?!

    Where's the donation page.
  • Please get this done, Jones, i love Moon. And there aren't many movies which are similiar to Blade Runner's Art-Direction/Style. I'm really excited for this new project.
  • He should talk to the people who are producing "Monopoly" and "Battleship", they have money, and it's clear they are out of ideas, so who knows, may be worth a try....
