National Lampoon's Vacation

No, no, no NO NO NO NOOOOOOOO. I start overacting like Shia LaBeouf when I learn news about Hollywood remaking or sequelizing movies from my childhood. I’m not an anti-sequel person, and in that area, I’m a lot more optimistic than most film fanatics. With the advances in technology and special effects, I understand the want  to update some of the big sci-fi and effects heavy classics (not that I agree, but I at least understand…)

But some movies just need to be left alone: particularly dramas and comedies. The Karate Kid doesn’t need a remake starring Will Smith’s son and Jackie Chan, and Nation Lampoon’s Vacation doesn’t need another crappy sequel/spin-off.  New Line/Warner Bros has signed Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus director David Dobkin to produce and possibly direct a new film in the Vacation series.

New Line has already developed a storyline, which they are now meeting with screenwriters to pen the script. The story follows Rusty Griswold, the son of Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase in the original films), who is now a father in his own right and takes his family on a, you guessed it, road trip vacation. Heatvision reports that New Line hopes to make a movie that skews more towards Planes Trains and Automobiles or Little Miss Sunshine than RV or Are We There Yet? Thank God…

And the movie will not be a remake, but a sequel/spin-off/reboot. The first trip would be acknowledged and the story will focus on a new adventure. The plan is to write in parts, although it hasn’t been established if it would be a cameo or something much larger, for Chase and Beverly D’Angelo to return as grandparents. Of course, no deals are in place.

It is unlikely that any of the original Griswold child actors will return for the new film, since Rusty and Audrey have been played by a different set of actors in each film. This fact is actually made into a joke in Vegas Vacation when Clark tells his children that he “hardly recognizes” them anymore.

It’s hard to complain about another sequel since this franchise has already been milked to death. It’s not like this film could ever hurt the series’ legacy, at least not any more than Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure (which is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen… ever). Christmas Vacation is one of the few third films in a movie series that ended up surpassing the sequel, European Vacation, by leaps and bounds. The 1997 film Vegas Vacation wasn’t horrible, but also wasn’t on the same level as either Vacation or Christmas Vacation.

Is this such a bad idea? Would it be fun to return to Walley World with a new generation of Griswolds?

  • Chevy Chase isn't too old, and I bet he'd love to be in it. If he's in, then I'm in!
  • MCA
He isn't too old I agree, but doesn't he just look weird and scary now? I've seen him in a few bits and pieces in the last few years (was there a Law & Order or something too?) and he looks like a guy in a weird fat suit, I just didn't like seeing it.

    As for a new one...
You think its shit now, wait til you watch it, arf.
  • CyT
I miss Chevy Chase. It would be great to see him do something natural and funny again, but its been so long I'm fearful of ruining my happy memories.
  • Easy: watch Community
  • DKS
Agree- But, Randy Quaid must also be in the movie too, and I'm in. Randy RULES !!!!!!!!
  • TVN
    It needs to end.
They are officially killing the joy that was my childhood.
    Curse you Hollywood!

    Get new ideas already.
  • Octoberist
as long as it's not a 'remake'.
  • jackdurden
Does this really need to be a Vacation movie? It can't just be an original family road trip film?
  • jimmytheghost
As long as sequels don't change the original, they really don't bother me. The Kung Fu Kid will have absolutely nothing to do with the original and most people of this generation won't even tie the two together.

The Point Break sequel terrified me. I LOVE Point Break and one of the reasons is because Bodhi kills himself at the end. But then there was mention that the sequel would involve Bodhi robbing more banks because he actually swam away in the first film. That literally changes the ending of the movie I love.

With all this said, I don't know how I feel about a new Vacation. If they are trying to make it good like they claim, then that's rad. But if it sucks, that's another black eye on the Vacation franchise.
  • The_Kid
Make it Anthony Michael Hall the original Rusty Griswold back in the role, I wonder if he can still do comedy, I know he's become a very serious actor.
  • Guest
Yeah. Why not Anthony Michael Hall?
  • DS2412
Agreed! Why not bring in Anthony Michael Hall? He would bring so much more credibility to the project on all fronts then just some douche that steps into the role.
  • I love the original, and I guess as long as this isn't a "remake" then it's okay. I'm not expecting good things though, I hope I'm wrong.
  • enzomoran
I want to kick the makers of the King Kong sequel in the balls, they started all this...
does anyone know who made the first remake ever? Maybe then I can find them and kick them in the balls.
  • michaelmorley
well i dont know i beleave there making another cause there running out of ideas for other movies to make and put there poor story in a famous franch size so they can put that name all over that title so it will get noticed so people will watch it its fucking stupid how they wont leave franch sizes alone these days why dont they go and make new movies rather then remakes or sequels and plus dont get rusty to star in it get chevy chase back hes the one who gave that movie all the money in the first place please dont do this without chevy chase or especially Beverly D,Angelo and also randy quiad there the money makers of the movie that will make people come to watch that if your gonna make a sequel do it in a fucking smart way you cunts
  • Matt
I just got dumber from trying to read this post
  • Bkey
Bring in Anthony Michael Hall, and if Chevy Chase would make an appearance, even a cameo, that would definitely be a plus. Also, Dobkin did a good job on Wedding Crashers, haven't seen his other work, so he might not be a half-bad choice to direct.

    Don't forget Randy Quaid.

    Christmas Vacation>Vacation

That said, this is just a horrible idea, the franchise is dead and no one cares about these films on a name basis anymore. Just make a new roadtrip movie and call it something else.
  • Chris
Sorry, who in this economy can even AFFORD a vacation?
  • I would love to see another Vacation movie and if it will involve Rusty as a grown up I would want to see at least Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo and Anthony Michael Hall reprise their roles. It would be an historic event.
  • The Great Cambino
I call a flooooooooOOOOOOoooooooppppppp. I think we've all had had plenty of Vacation movies, thanks.
  • bubblyduckey
WORST IDEA EVER. I love vacation and christmas vacation... but I just think they should be left alone.
  • thrillhouse
Peter, no one's walking out of here - no, NO! We're all in this together! This is a full-blown, 4-alarm Hollywood emergency. We're gonna press on and we're gonna have the hap-hap-happiest movie website since Harry Knowles blew his load all over the Phantom fuckin' Menace.

And when Hollywood squeezes this piece of shit into theaters someday, they're going to find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the world wide web.
  • wonka bar
Ummmm....last i checked the great John Hughes has passed away, and he was the original pen of the first 3 vacations and that is why they were such great films. Hughes didn't do vegas vacation and that is why it sucked and why anyone else's attempt to make another vacation without hughes should be laughed at.
  • existenz
I have no problem with them writing a script. But if the script sucks, don't make it! If they find a writer who comes up with some magic, then do it.

It's not really that complicated. All of these horrible sequels and spinoffs we see were horrible in script form, but someone decided to fund them anyway.
  • JPX
I say, bring on the sequel! All the sequels are somewhat lame but fun to watch. Why the faux outrage? Your time to be angry would have been when they made Vacation 2, not Vacation 5. That would be like getting angry that they're making Friday the 13th 12.
  • An impoverished screenwriter enters the office of a studio bignob, and is forced to spend the duration of the meeting on his knees. He is forbidden from looking the bignob in the eye (if you’ll forgive the expression).

Screenwriter: “Please sir, I’ve cobbled together a script for a comedy. It’s a bit like those National Lampoon’s Vacation films, only not as good. In fact it’s rubbish.”

Bignob: “Silence, pipsqueak! Leave it to me, we’ll slap the National Lampoon name on it, offer Chevy Chase a one-scene cameo – he’ll take anything these days – and people will flock to see it like idiot sheep attending an idiot sheep convention!”

Screenwriter: “Oh, sir, what a splendid idea! It’ll make a fortune and I can finally buy some shoes!”

Bignob: “Silence, pipsqueak! I’ll be the one trousering the cash, thankyou! Now bugger off back to your one-room bedsit with the bucket-toilet. Your rats must need feeding.”

And with that the screenwriter shuffles backwards on his knees out of the office, keeping his head bowed. As he is ejected onto the street by a burly security guard, a single tear falls from his filthy face onto his bare foot. It’s the only wash he can afford.

I actually think Vegas Vacation is a very underrated movie.
  • Christmas Vacation is pretty much the only film in the series I watched more than once (since I consider it obligatory holiday viewing).

I have to say that without Chevy Chase, any new Vacation film would not be worth seeing.
  • BScott
I gotta admit I wouldn't mind if they really got some top notch writers on it. Truth is, I'd see it even if they don't. Bad as they seem to get, we all have a copy of Christmas Vacation. And dumb as it is, Vegas Vacation was funny. Recently I was at a buffet and randomly said "I'll have some of the yella'" and like a call & response another 30-something dad nearby responded, "And don't get cheap on me."
Vacation movies, like cotton, are part of the fabric of our lives.
  • BScott
Plus, I vote for Ethan Embry to return as Rusty. As long as we also see the return of Nick Pappagiorgio . . . from Yuma.
  • I would love a vacation sequel... If it had Chevy Chase in it... The four real vacation movies (not the Randy Quaid one...) are either slightly better than decent (european, Vegas), or great (Vacation, Christmas Vacation), so with a track record that good, I wouldn't mind to see Clark get back in the saddle. What I have no interest in is a vacation movie without Chase... Not a good idea. I think it would be easy to have Clark play the role of Grandfather in this one, and he could take his kids and their kids on a trip, or just the grandkids. Either way, if it were slightly better than Vegas Vacation it would be worth it. Also, it can't be PG, damn it.
  • butchwax
They need to let it rest Dont beat it , But If you do make another one Make sure Chevy Chase is in It some how he made the movie
  • Rick
Never understood why he was always fantasizing about that other chick when Beverly D’Angelo was sooooooo much hotter.
  • butchwax
They need to not beat it , But if they are in the makings make sure to have Chevy Chase in it some how !
  • Joel
As someone, who has loved all of the Vacation movies, including the most recent Vegas Vacation, I would be willing to give another 90 minutes of my life to another Vacation movie... However, probably not the movie they are talking about. Unless Clark comes along for the ride as grandpa Griswald.

This just sounds like it has the makings of such great sequals as "Caddyshack 2" and "American Pie: Bandcamp"
  • Rob0729
Skip the reboot and go onto a porn remake with three of the four Audreys getting it on. The Dana Baron (original Audrey), Juilette Lewis (Christmas Vaction), and Marisol Nichols (Vegas Vacation) are all still hotties. Rather see them all get it on rather than a lame sequel/reboot.
  • Danny85
I love all four of those movies. I always wanted another one, but I don't like this premise. Now if they did something were Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo are grandparents and they want to take their kids and their grandkids on a trip. I would see that in a heartbeat.
  • frelling_cute
I have no interest unless they bring Chevy and Beverly back. Also maybe Anthony Michael Hall.
  • Tim Malooly
My friend and I already wrote a prequel to this series--called "National Lampoon's Honeymoon," with a present-day framework in Los Angeles at Audrey's wedding (with roles for Chevy, Beverly, Randy, Johnny Galecki, and Juliette Lewis).

The bulk of the story is a flashback to Clark & Ellen courtship in college, their wedding, and their wild honeymoon in Acapulco in the 1970s.

But we don't have an agent and haven't been able to get anybody to read our script. If you're reading, New Line/Dobkins--let's take a meeting!

A new writing team has written a prequel to the Vacation series titled, "Honeymoon". From what I hear the story line follows Clark and Ellen from engagement, to wedding, and honeymoon mixed in with a present day story line of Audrey (Juliette Lewis) getting married in Los Angeles. Sounds like a great way to work in the old cast plus introduce the "next generation" Clark Griswald. Thoughts??
  • Jeff
Since Rusty always mentions going to Hawaii it would be cool if they went to Hawaii this time.
  • TomG123
I think its a brilliant idea, Chevy and Beverly need to play more than a cameo role to make it work though. Hopefully this will happen. I always though it would be a shame to end the franchise with xmas vacation 2 which was poor.
  • Shane
I totally agree the original vacation movie was great and christmas vacation was even better.. I still quote them both... Its almost a way of life... My wife says Im just like Clark, she even calls me "Sparky" sometimes. My kids even call me Clark sometime because I take things like trips alil too far sometimes... So, I feel I have great insight :) Go ahead make another, why not you cant kill a classic. But, If you dont bring back originals to give a good connection for us then dont expect good word of mouth for the film. Do the movie justice. Get people working on it that LOVED the movie as much as I STILL DO. They are both in my van and we can quote almost every line. Hey, Im availible!

I really hate when sequels don't use the original actors it ruins the hole film without Chase & Beverly there's no point doing another one. Christmas vacation is one of the funniest films ever made.

No way is Christmas Vacation better than Vacation or European Vacation. Christmas Vacation felt like a child's movie in comparison, the characters who were chosen for Rusty and Audrey were horrendous, and they didn't even play Holiday Road. They could have at least had it played in the beginning while the Griswold's were on their way to search for a tree.
  • bfthill
It'd be a great idea to make another movie if they could just do it right. But I'm sure they'll just f.... it up. What's this about Chevy Chase barely being in it? That'll be the first mistake if that happens. Like I said more than likely they'll just f... it up.
