LOL: 2012 Without The Special Effects

2012

Remember that clip from Roland Emmerich’s upcoming epic disaster movie 2012, where John Cusack saves his family and ridiculously outruns an earthquake in a limo while almost all of Los Angeles is turned to dust around him? White Colours Studio has decided to reedit the five minute clip but remove the “distracting” special effects so that we can just focus on the performances. Watch the one and a half minute edit after the jump.

Thanks to FilmDrunk for the tip.

Did not like this Editord version no continuite.
  • Can't spell 'edited' or 'continuity' but got 'Projectionist' right. Fascinating.

My dad watched that clip when we were watching tv. He was really in too it. I was like he cant be for real. It does look like the effects are finale catching up to where they should be in these kinda movies. I don't care if movies have alot of CG its just that it looks like crap compared to movies that do it in more practical effects. Like lord of the rings or 300 or sin city. The one thing I can harp on is the effects in. Is I am Legend everything was stellar but the effects of the monsters. If they had gone Practical on that it would have been even better.
  • AlexTamayo
I apologize if I'm misreading what you wrote, but are you saying that The Lord of the Rings, 300 and SinCity had more Pratical Effects than Visual Effects (VFX)?

Because if you are, and again, pardon me if you are not. But if you are saying that, I think you are very far from the truth. All three of those films were mostly shot in blue/green screens, as far as I'm concern. Actually they are VFX heavy movies.

Though I have to admit I kind of agree with you on the sense that I think that movies that have a lot of VFX deviate from the story/plot/character development to concentrate more in the VFX part of it. I love Chris Nolan's point of view on effects in general, they are aids to help tell a story, if they're irrelevant, they should not be there (that's my interpretation). You don't do a story after the VFX (ahem, Michael Bay). I go to movies to see a story of human emotions and interactions, not to see pretty things flying by.

Though ironic, I'm a CG Artist. But still that does not keep me from appreciating movies for what they are, stories told by a group of artists.
  • PalmliX
Yah, I have to second that motion. 300 and Sin City were basically shot entirely in front of green screen, maybe he was being sarcastic?
  • Bahahaha.
  • terk
I can't wait until the movie comes out so it can fail already..
  • You kidding? It's gonna haul in some serious scrilla. General audiences eat this stuff up.
  • dagreenman18
I would watch the entire movie done like this.
  • It would be about 12 minutes long.
  • lungstarr
is this including or excluding the end credits..?
  • It'd would actually be cool to have an entire sequence like this where we never leave the car, Children of Men-style - a lot more intense, character driven, and overall cheaper to make
  • hailstate
That would require creativity and good acting. We're talking about Roland "How many times can I make the same movie?" Emmerich and John "How many times can I play the same character?" Cussack, here.
  • FRICK! There's ALWAYS some huge caveat!
  • todd
you motherfuckers and your fucking bullshit
  • Oh wow...that ending is fantastic!
  • bud
does john cusack have any lines that are not yelled?
  • darrin
if 1:26 is just acting in that clip, that means around 4:34, is cgi.
  • capawesome
I just lost my shit. lol!
  • tony5787
and the academy award for best supporting actor goes to.......KEYBOARD CAT for playing the doomed city of los angeles as it crumbles into the sea in "2012"
  • ednrder

  • Arnold Vosloo
I love how all of your are film aficionados now. Too cool to enjoy a stupid popcorn movie? Christ..

  • mnk
    AHahaHAh lol KEYBOARD CAT!
  • Joe VFX
Entertaining... but it was soooo much better WITH the CG effects... they freaking ROCK!!! That's a big reason why me & my friends will go see this... to see the incredible, outlandish and utterly insane destruction and mayhem!!!
  • Dysthymia83
John Cusack is too good for this dreck. Too bad we never got that "Grosse Pointe Blank" sequel...
  • omarswarez
    ...or that Serendipity sequel
  • ... or that America's Sweethearts sequel.
  • juanv
This was GREAT!!! This is why story and acting are the most important elements of a film. No matter how impressive the special effects are, they can never make a movie great.
  • Wait.. Your implying that the acting wasnt top notch in this?
  • Ano
oo my gosh , the movie 2012 is great like you sad but the special effects make it great ! and you said not ? i don't get it , the movie is great and that's just the reason of the special effects . also the story , but most of all the effects . i think you've to learn what makes a movie great . bastard ! shut up about 2012 , you have to say good things about it , not negatives ! Kate Curtis is my friend 'nd John Curtis is my dad . believe it or not , i don't care what you think . I have a lot of family who's playing in the movie , so if you say one negative word about 2012 , i swear you , i call the cops !
  • enzomoran
Um...the cat at the end ruined it.
  • omarswarez
Yeah I know. That giant cat is such a jerk for destroying LA
  • Was like 5 Seconds Movie meets Keyboard Cat, brilliant!
  • Moose
John Cusack is one hell of a driver!!! that piolot is pretty good also
  • Fiona Moneygrubber
Did he say, "Take the freeway. It's half the time"? When was the last time the writer drove in LA?
  • Mr Ferryman
    2012+Keyboard cat=Huge Box Office
    2012+No keyboard cat=Cat Poo
  • Sure is a little cheesy. I don't know but most special effects look cheesy 10-20 years after the fact. That's what they are using at the time....
  • Marie
the movie was great . you see a lot of special effects , it's not fake, it looks real ! i was happy at the end , it was a good idea to do that with the arks . you can see the movie free and online with very good Quality ! on www.freefullmovies.net ! there are no subtitles but don't worry , it's not difficult to understand them .
