TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN

Producer Don Murphy maintains a pretty lively website and forum that was crashed for a bit this morning when Roberto Orci confirmed in a forum post that he and Alex Kurtzman would not return at all for Transformers 3, leaving script duties entirely in the hands of Ehren Kruger. (Well, not entirely, as Michael Bay will have his input.) This is no surprise to anyone who’s been following along over the past couple months.

One poster asked today if ‘Bob and Alex’ really weren’t returning for the next film, to which Orci responded “It’s true.” Back in March, Orci had intimated, also on Murphy’s forum, that the pair would not return to write the third Transformers film. “Time for fresh blood!” Orci said . “The main reason we would move on is because we risk getting stale and comfortable. If you only sing one song for too long, you miss the opportunity to sing news songs. We’ll see.” Since then, the screenwriting name bandied about with respect to the film is Ehren Kruger, who also worked on Revenge of the Fallen.

I’m no great fan of Kruger’s, and many peg the writer’s work with Michael Bay as being the source of the ‘humor’ in Revenge of the Fallen that many found juvenile and terrible. (And, judging by the box office numbers, more found delightful. Go figure.) Can we expect more of that funny stuff in the third film? Seems reasonable to assume so at this point. The most interesting post from Orci, however, was one concerning the crude humor of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. One post brings up anecdotal tales about parents not taking their kids to see the second film because of the humor, to which Orci responds, “I can’t blame them.”

Meanwhile, we know that Bay has a story in mind and is already beginning work on the third film for that 2011 release date that Paramount announced and Bay originally renounced.

alex and robert are smart people
  • Could there be no more reporting on Transformers 3? Please?
  • oh the humanity
Agreed. Isn't there anything more worthwhile to report on?
  • Synergy
Really really sad...that these people are supposed to be some of the best writers and directors and producers that Hollywood has to offer and the shit that they produce is just beyond words. Transformers 2 was such a crapfest with no heart. It was produced and put into production for one reason and one reason only, to make money. There was absolutely no thought of the fans or the nostalgia of the series. I hope they take a more serious tone..I'm not asking for an R rated Transformers movie but please, don't tell me you didn't feel like you lost a few brain cells after watching that slow, scrambled together mess of a film. Michael Bay is rich he doesn't care if he ruins this franchise, he's got tons of credentials and he's going to make the movie he want's. It's just sad. I could go to the store buy a pen and some paper, then go to a zoo, throw that in a cage full of monkeys...wait a year...bribe the monkeys with a few bananas for the papers back and I guarantee you that the scrambled mess that they wrote on those pieces of papers, would be better than what Michael Bay could come up with for Transformers 3.

    ...yep

Kurtzman and Orci are great writers just look at Star Trek.
Spielberg is just doing some bad choices in the last few years.
Michael Bay has no skill at all, im sure there's people here could get a few explosives and shake the camera about.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Star Trek script good? No, the effects and the actors were good and they were directed fairly well... But the script... no, it wasn't good. They blew up Vulcan, killed Kirk's dad (and that scene made me cry but only because of the way they made it), killed Spock's mom (really... in order to remake a series they had to destroy everything???), made up some stuff about a black hole and Leonard Nemoy at the last second and didn't think out the bad guy's evil weapon of doom...

If new Spock... in a tiny fighter jet with 2 small little blasters can shoot down the giant evil mining planet cracking totem pole thingy of doom.... then why didn't anybody ELSE try that???? It's like... did anybody else think of shooting the pole mining rod thingy of doom??? It's not like it was shielded...

you all need to really think about what your sayin! honestly!? Shut UP! Bay worked F^$%*@G hard on that movie and it turned out absolutely amazing! Yeah it strayed away a little from the old series but its a new age! its 25 years later! if it remained really close to the original we would have a friggen tape player soundwave, a gun megatron, and a VW bug Bumblebee! What the series needed was a new image! IT still has that nostalgic feel of watchin the transformers come to life on screen but yet you have that amazing feeling that this is what they would really look like if they transformed! Go back to your mothers basement and masterbate to the thought of actually getting a girl some day! grow up. BAY DID AMAZING! Cant you see that this movie is what the franchise needed!? Back in the 80's it was cool and all to have that cartoon but its the 21's century! and lets face it people wanna see realistic shiny cars transform basically into what they would really look like! BAy deserves a big round of applause and 5 oscars for that movie. TRansformers 3 (if ever) will be great, and it will b done by the amazing director, Michael Bay.
    _@#$% you critics_
  • oh the humanity
This is your brain on TRANSFORMERS.

Sounds like ur jealous of their talent. I happend to love Transformers 2 just as much as the 1st one. So if u think u can do better, lets see it
  • Seriousness
    Synergy,

I completely AGREE with you. I hope the third installment will bring more seriousness to the franchise. I enjoyed part 2; however, it was the humor was way too childish. I want to next film to have a more serious and dark tone to it and less of the humor. As for the twins? Why have them in the film? They don't do squat. Hopefully, Kruger will put a dark and serious twist to Transformer. Doesn't necessarily have to be an R-rated film, but that doesn't mean Transformers has to be childish either.

Interesting that you are suprised that a franchise designed to make money by selling toys is continuing in the same veign! The original series, if you actually go back and watch it, was exactly the same as this second film. Cheeky, messy, the same stories week in week out, that was the whole point! Plus no matter what anyone thinks, Transformers is all about the special effects, not an in depth plot! C'mon! It could have been better no doubt, but i still think the critisism is ill placed and unecessary.
  • Mark
Dude u gotta be joking me. The movie is really good for a sci-fi sequel. I don’t see anything wrong with the story or the characters. What did u expect? Titanic?!!!?
  • punchline
I can't believe anyone blames someone other than "Bob and Alex" for the terrible humor in ROTF. That same terrible humor is what killed Transformers 1 and Star Trek for me.

Where's the "Phantom Edit" for these three flicks?
  • bomberman
Star Trek would be tricky and really unnecessary.

Transformers 1 and 2 would either be 5 minutes of madness each... or a blank screen
  • Tetsuo_Man
    Blank screen = )

btw, ur post made me lol.
  • Esben Madsen
Actually if you skip by all the scenes that has humans in them TF1 becomes much better.
  • Revenge of the Fallen had writers!
  • clarencesomerset
I'd rather think they had done a decent job with the script - but that wasn't what we ended up watching. Things get changed a lot during shooting, and I won't be surprised if a director like Bay decided to make the changes that dumbed down the film e.g. the Twins. Look at what Orci and Kutzberg did for Star Trek - not a masterpiece by any standards, but a pretty solid scipt all the same. I blame the director.
  • Great to hear this, finally they will have more time for some good projects like Fringe or new Star Trek. Judging by rushed release date and new writer, Transformers 3, 4, 5... will be even worse that the Revenge of the Fallen was. Transformers 2 without bad and childish humor and some half hour of the running time could be even good movie.
  • turok1134
Sucks. They're solid writers when given the time to write something adequate, which they were not in the case of TF2. Oh well.
  • mchops
As long as bay doesn't touch the script that's the key.
  • jackdurden
They blamed Michael Bay for the racist twin Transformers. But Transformer Heaven? That was all them.
  • edc2
you mean the Transformer Heaven from the comics from years before the movie?
  • Tetsuo_Man
Let me explain a bad idea... if it's a bad idea in the comics, just don't add it. Kinda like Wolverine's bone claws... bad idea, no... a stupid idea, so let's just forget about it and move on.
  • Kyle C.
The crass unfunny humor of Transformers 2 (I refuse to call it by the other name) ruined that film for me, Shia going to robot heaven didn't help matters either. I really liked the first one but Bay really fucked up the sequel. I'm officially done with that franchise, and Bay as well. I keep hoping he'll follow up the greatness that was The Rock, but I honostly think the more successful he gets, the less he cares. That's why the first Transformers was good, The Island bombed and he realized he actually had to put some thought and care into a film. Then Transformers was a huge hit and he transformed back into the douchebag who made Armegeddon and Pearl Harbor. I just hope that audiences noticed the dip in quality (I doubt it) and don't turn out for TF3.
  • Name
u should really learn how to spell. Honestly is the correct way and I loved TF2, as u call it. Armageddon and Pearl Harbor are also 2 of my favorite movies, so get over yourself & learn to enjoy things for the way they are.
  • Dysthymia83
Ehren Kruger has written 1 good movie : "Arlington Road". Everything else on his filmography is feces.
  • King Le Douchee
You douchebags (Not you Russ) are the people that were griping even bfore the first one came out. Just be happy you got to see some giants transforming robots kicking ass. What a bunch of fucking whiners.
  • Just because people have a different perspective from your own doesn't automatically make them wrong. And just because you make massively ignorant generalizations doesn't make you correct.

If your opinion of whether a film is good depends upon how many robots explode then I can understand why you might have a problem with people who enjoy movies with plot and substance. By the way you talk, it would seem to be a foreign concept to you.
  • Octoberist
if everyone thought that way, then what defines a bad movie, your majesty? I believe that certain movies should be entertaining but just not absurdly stupid. Transformers 2 was absurdly stupid where I was worried about the intelligence of society. BUT I did enjoy part one, so don't go there pal!!!
  • Kyle C.
Your name is Douchee! That's all I have to say about that.
  • Esben Madsen
    I hate you as well.
  • probot
When can we live in a society when people stop giving Michael Bay there money? I think the only Bay film I actually payed to see was the first Transformers...that's last he'll see me open my wallet.
  • it is sad these 2 won't be on board... let's hope the transformer 3 is better
  • twinmom
I don't understand how you assume box office receipts mean people "liked" the humor of the 2nd film. We took our twins to see it, HATED the robot "humor" (it wasn't even funny, let's not get started on offensive) but we never received a refund from the theater because of it, or even thought we COULD get one. Your statement would suggest that all moviegoers who didn't like the stupid humor of TF2 should have received refunds and therefore the box office receipts would have been lower, and the fact that they weren't means the movie writing was ok? *sigh* If only it worked that way. At least I wouldn't have PAID to lose 5 IQ points.
  • drewbstew
How could these guys be so awesome with Star Trek, and not so awesome with... everything else? Granted, MI:III was alright, in a campy sort of way. And granted, Star Trek was a great movie but not necessarily a great screenplay.

I'm guessing their successes with MI:III and Star Trek had more to do with the director than the material. Abrams for the win.
  • Blake
alex and robert are terrible. Both Transformers and Star Trek had so many plot holes it still hurts my head to think about them. I'm not looking forward to more juvenile humor but maybe we'll get a more coherent storyline.
  • Phontsolo
Totally agree with you. Star Trek had a lot of holes. These two writers are just ok.
  • Phontsolo
Great news! If only they'd get rid of Michael Bay. ;o)
  • Esben Madsen
Oh you doe-eyed optimists who actually thinks there is just a shred of hope that TF3 will be any different from the first 2. Please don't do anything drastic like pay to see it when it comes out. DL that shit, laugh once, and move on.
  • Royalstoner
Yo man Transformers 2 ROTF was mad don't go dissing good owrk you no good son of a B*TCH
  • Name
Transformers 1 and 2 were the 2 best movies ever made, you idiots are insane.
  • Mr.tallica
Rotf one of the WORST MOVIEs EVER!!!!!!! Ever!!!!!!!!I Hollywood is a joke bottom line and the punchline u people who fuel it with ur money LOL
  • chillout26
what did everyone think rotf would be?? seriously?? second installments of movie franchises are always the most epic an big as far as action/fighting. the more action, less plot. no action, full of plot. no plot, all action. tryin to do too much with rotf will kill the movie dead as much as bad humor etc. the main draw for films like this is the action, hello??? big fighting robots people. not pussy ass actors with performances that attempt to win academy awards. nobody watched the cartoon and was like "good dialogue, for a saturday morning cartoon." go bay, thank you for the live action transformers movies.
  • dirtycs
I like what you said chillout26.
And basically if you ever followed the original cartoons and comics.. there was good storylines, but its not like they were academy award storys... they were fake characters and action figures! Look at what the writers and producers have created from such a simple thing.
Im all for great plots and actors and no plot holes but come on; these movies are awesome for what they came from! its fun to see old school stuff from growing up become integrated into live action, 3d animation type movies. looking forward to the 3rd even if its cheesy
  • Peter Griffin
So here we go with Transformers 3.. So is it me or is Michael Bay trying to be another George Lucas (remember the Star Wars series with that lame Jar Jar whatever). It just happens that Michael Bay is upping George by adding even more lame characters..
  • turok1134
Uhh... Why are you acting like making 3 movies in a series is so unheard of?
  • Peter Griffin
I have no problem with Transformers being a series of movies, it's the lame characters that are added to the movie ( the twins as an example) that ruin the whole idea. Come on now, do we really need those lame characters to be in the movie.
  • Spirit
wow people that did not like the 2nd movie ( revenge of the fallen ) are out of there mines.... transformers has been around a long time and i don't see any reason why they shouldn't keep going with them.... but they should put in old charecters too like hot shot and red alert.... but i think a third one should be great
