Well, I definitely didn’t see this coming. Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal have cast Adrien Brody in one of the lead roles for Predators. We also now know a few more minor members of the cast for the upcoming visit to the Predator planet, and there’s a last-minute report that Topher Grace is negotiating to join the cast, too.

Variety reports the details and says that Brody and his people lobbied hard for the deal. I can see why he might want it, but he’s definitely not my vision of a space marine. (And it may be that he’s not a ’space marine’ at all.) He’s more like the Shane Black character in the original Predator. (”Get it? It’s because of the echo!”) But I did just catch Brody again in some of The Brothers Bloom, so I’m pretty up on the guy right now. He’s a great actor, and if his lack of bulk isn’t a deterrent, then sure. Let’s see it.

The trade blog also reiterates the rest of the cast, some of which we knew (Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins) and some of which is new or has gone under-reported in the recent past: Alice Braga, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Louiz Ozawa. The film begins shooting soon in Hawaii and Austin and is still set for release on July 9, 2010.

THR chimes in with a breakdown of the cast and their roles:

Brody is a man who ends up inheriting the mantle of leader and is known as a hunter of men. Grace would play an accountant-type whose unassuming facade masks a dangerous serial killer. Braga is the tough female killer. Ali is a man not afraid to die, Goggins is the loose canon of the group and Taktarov is a former Russian special ops agent. Trejo, already cast, is Cuchillo, a hardened warrior with twin uzis strapped to his back.

Hopefully we’ll soon hear some more details to flesh out what we know of the script. Recently, we heard (possible spoilers here) that the film will feature Predator dogs and falcons, and that one of the film’s Big Bads may be the enigmatically named Black Super Predator.

    FIRST.

This is shaping up to be awesome.
    Except for maybe Topher Grace....
  • Choice M
Really? A "first"? This is 2009. Lets cut this sh*t out sometime near the turn of yesterday. I understand people we're declaring first when they landed on the moon or stumble across the inca but jesus man. A blog post on a predators remake is hardly desirable undiscovered country. And this one filled with very odd news, and disappointing news.
I'm not sure we need oscars winners throwing their hapless clout around a creature feature. You should be worried than Ari Emmanuel's going to be pulling for a screen ratio of 80/20. 80% Adrian Brody. 20% Predator. Wakeup.
  • jasonb26
amen, because we normally don't get the 'first' bullshit at /film...fucking yawn.

anyways, i didn't really care at all for this film, but now that brody is in, i think i just got interested.
  • Choice M
    Fucking yawn is right.
  • Name
I'm not looking to replace the original timeless Predator movie. But I am excited to here that they r making one that might be worth watching. I do expect Brody to lose some body parts though.... He better not be the one who lives at the end. He looks toooo woosy.
  • You're clearly jealous he got first.
  • Christopher_M
don't forget Topher played a great slimeball in Traffic
  • AfroVince
Hey, at least he had something else to say other than "first".

    Ease up Django.
  • nindie
First is right! A first class loser! AAAA-lllooo-oose, oooo-ossse, eeeerrrrrr
  • GNO
    GNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  • Name
    why?
  • FH99
Adrien Brody vs a Predator? Presumably this will be a five minute short film. ;)
  • jason
    it Walton Goggins, not Walter
  • Christopher_M
Brody did look pretty tough firing off that tommy gun in King Kong...I think Topher is a good actor I recommend people re-watch Traffic..when he's given good direction and lines he can deliver the goods...
  • Dear God. We've gone from Arnold Schwarzenegger, to Danny Glover... and now to Adrien Brody.

    This is just sad.
  • Octoberist
if you're talking about physical, then maybe.

If you're talking about career-wise and acting, Brody is damn good. Hell, he's a friggin' Oscar winner.
  • Haha, no offense, but that oscar doesn't really mean shit. This isn't going to end well.
  • Christopher_M
he did a decent job in both King Kong and The Jacket..he's been in genre films before don't count him out
  • Octoberist
my point being is that, yeah, maybe Brody isn't the best choice, but people online love to brush certain actors off, as if it's an absolute. As if Brody is some talentless hack, when he's not.
  • Name
I'm sorry but I've enjoyed waaay more movies from Arnold than I have from Brody. Actually none with Brody. Then again, I'm not really the oscar movie type...
  • Django
Adrian proved he could do action w/ a confident actor's panache in King Kong (brought down by Jack Black & Naomi Watts, not him) -
and you guys want muscles & attitude?

I raise you ONE Danny Trejo for a single Arnold, Jesse, or Carl Weathers.

I'm not one to say who can kick who's asses - but I would put money down that right now, right here, Danny Trejo would skin them alive.
    LITERALLY.
  • yer
After his Oscar win Adrien Brody's career plummeted. Another bad move.
  • The_Kid
This seems like an awesome cast, I'm excited for this, I just hope the plot doesn't suck ass. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
  • The Great Cambino
I hope this kicks as much ass as Predator 2 and AVP sucked balls. Even the original holds up pretty poorly these days, especially compared to, say, Alien. This monster is too good for shitty movies.
  • Name
you suck. The original is great.
  • The Great Cambino
Get over your nostalgia, it's a cheesy 80's movie with a few good moments. Yeah, it's fun. Great? No fucking way in hell.
  • That casting is pretty awful.
  • pat
Topher Grace? Bleh... can't he just stick to the "hi, I"m an awkward guy trying to talk to a girl" sort of roles?
  • sauce_1
I think everyone just kinda said a large collective "Huh" together on this one.

The original cast of Predators was a pretty long list of action stars and big burly types. When they announced this movie I imagined they would go The Expendables route and hire a whole slew of big macho guys again.

A wait and see I suppose.
  • Goro
Feel similarly. If they could gather something like the cast from THE EXPENDABLES for PREDATORS, THEN we're talking. Yes, Brody can act, but he doesn't energize the screen as an action type, imho. Jason Statham, FTW.
  • With all the beefy action stars available to them how on Earth do they settle on Adrien Brody?
  • Christopher_M
I don't think they'd want bad acting to ruin the film...if you notice the cast is very impressive...a majority of them are known for their acting abilities rather than their fame or action roles

an example Walton Goggins is also an Oscar winner...Alice Braga was in City of God and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali was in Benjamin Button
  • I agree, but let's face it -- acting performances are not what are going to ruin this film. Lackluster action sequences featuring a lanky git who can barely lift a BFG are worrying. Sometimes you just need big fucking muscles and lots of explosions.

Jesus I'm starting to sound like Michael Bay...
  • Christopher_M
I trust Rodriguez casting abilities... when he cast Freddy Rodríguez as the lead in Planet Terror I had the same issues you have with Brody...Freddy ended up coming off as badass instead...I don't think lackluster action sequences and Robert Rodriguez have ever gone together in a sentence before....wait for the trailer and I'm sure it will change your mind
  • Christopher_M
I also didn't really think of Johnny Depp as an action star until he was in Once Upon A Time In Mexico...so it really is the film itself that should be judged
  • You are and I like it!
  • gigaherc
Walton Goggins IS NOT an Oscar winner man.
  • Ben
Just throwing this out there. Am I the only one who enjoys the lunacy of Predator 2? Its so ridiculous and hilarious. But 1 is definitely better.
  • Christopher_M
I loved Bill Paxton and Gary Busey in that film...but it wasn't as entertaining as the original film...
  • Name
It's not a bad movie if you think of it as a Predator movie, not an action movie. It's about the predators' hunting skills and them trying to find the biggest hunt. 1 and 2 are completely different types of movies.
  • freemachine
Poor Adrien Brody...from an Academy Award to a Robert Rodriguez film. Ouch! What's next? "Cash 4 Gold" commercials?
  • justinlecair
Topher Grace? Isn't it bad enough that he ruined Spiderman 3?
  • Name
    that wasn't his fault...
  • justinlecair
That's true. He never should have been cast as Venom. Making the awkward kid from That 70's Show play Eddie Brocke was really idiotic. Having him play a serial killer is more believable.
  • Guest
he didnt ruin Spiderman 3, Sam Raimi never even liked Venom
  • justinlecair
Well it showed because he sure did screw up the character in nearly every way imaginable. I'd also like to point out that Raimi is part of the minority because almost everyone else loves Venom; especially the fans!
  • Guest
Nice casting against type. I have hope for this movie...
  • I'm suddenly more interested and excited for this movie.
  • probot
I had no interest in this film until I heard Mahershalalhashbaz Ali was attached. YESSS!!!
  • musicsoup
this is what both aliens vs predator films lacked... a cast.

for that reason alone, this movie already wins.

think about it. we all know the cast of the original predator. but the cast of predator 2 was pretty impressive at the time. danny glover, bill paxton, gary busey, maria conchita alonso.

name anyone in the avp films.

    exactly.

let's give this one a chance.
