Terminator Franchise Rights For Sale…Again

The Terminator

No major film franchise has been owned by as many people as the Terminator series. The future of the franchise was called into question recently when current owners Halcyon were forced to file for bankruptcy, but as a new piece in the LA Times points out, rights shuffling almost seems like standard operating procedure if you’re in the Terminator business.

Halcyon Holding Group’s Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek bought the Terminator rights in 2007, paying $25m for the privilege of making Terminator: Salvation.

The Terminator rights had been split prior to 1997, with Gale Anne Hurd owning 50% and a variety of companies owning the balance at different times. In 1997 former Carolco producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna unified the rights by purchasing the stake from the bankrupt Carolco as well as Hurd’s half. Then, ten years later, they sold the total package to Halcyon. But despite the relative success of Salvation ($370m worldwide — never suspect that questions of Hollywood accounting aren’t to be taken seriously)  Halcyon couldn’t pay back money borrowed from a hedge fund called Pacificor to make the Terminator purchase. (Halcyon claims they only owe $4m to Pacificor, which claims it is owed $32m.)

Because the Terminator rights are Halcyon’s chief asset, they’ll be the primary item sold to cover the debt. Anderson and Kubicek now claim the package is worth $60m, or twice what they paid two years ago.

So, two things. First, the Terminator series is one of the only major film series in Hollywood not owned by a major studio. (Star Wars is another.) But this sale could put rights in the hands of a studio like Warner Bros. or Sony, which would put an end to the series’ independent prospects. And finally, if you’re concerned about whether or not there will be another Terminator movie, rest assured there will be, sooner or later. (A fifth film is in development, though things are moving slowly.) The only question is from whom.

    Just let it die!
  • Guest
i would like to see more Terminator movies only if a good director does it not McG
  • Cameron should buy it and immediately announce that the franchise is dead.
  • Felipe F.
    true
  • stb247
Actually, that would be the coolest move ever made in Hollywood!
  • I think Cameron should buy as well, and decide for himself whether or not he wants to continue the franchise. He's earned it.
  • moose
Cameron is not part of the hollywood system. He's a canadian filmmaker.
  • enzomoran
Canadian or not he can still buy it.
  • mbellerbrock
ZOMG, Canadians don't have any ownership rights! Everyone knows that!
  • capawesome
    Pretty much this.
  • Josh
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Movie!!!!!!
  • CooperKai
Yes! A Terminator movie with little to no action! PERFECT!
  • uh, that show totally sucked... and john connor was a whiny bitch, he was cooler when he was 10
  • mchops
Terminator chronicles was better thanT3. Maybe better than salvation
    but probably not.
  • Jack
He was a pain in the ass when he was 10, T:SCC owns.
  • Geefis
    Disney is all over this!
  • ryz
    "THIS SUMMER"
"A MOVIE NOT TO BE MISSED"
"MICKEY AND HIS FRIENDS VS THE TERMINATORS"
  • mchops
Please someone get this franchise back to James Cameron. Then we can have a real intense future war.
  • James Cameron was one of the original SELLERS of the Terminator franchise... and if he wanted it back, I'm sure he would've bought it by now. I don't think he cares at all about the series.
  • Cameron had his reasons or selling... I saw him give a talk in Santa Monica this spring, and he still follows the franchise, and you could tell he still cares about what happens to it; although he admitted that the franchise was 'out of his hands' at that point.
  • RussFischer
He sold his stake for $1! (To Hurd, who would become his wife, but still.)
  • Hey! has anyone thought to themselves lately with these sequels and remakes.? "Hey I can make it 10 times better than this" it's bad with t3 was better than t4. I'm sorry it was!
  • Kyle C.
No it was not! At least Salvation tried to take itself seriously, plus it had much better action scenes. What ruined the movie was a bad script, all the peices were in place to make a good film except the most important. T3 had no redeeming qualities whatsoever, not even the "dark" ending.
  • mchops
I totally agree. Salvation wasn't great but it was definitely better
    than T3.
  • thepeoplesmovies
either let the franchise rest in piece or if you want to destroy any credibility the movie has left after salvation itll go to mcg or give it to s director who will do a better job than mcg
  • papasanchez
Terminator salvation was the bloody citizen kane of the robot world compared to rise of the machines! I shall compare ROTM with, oh, say......oscar.
  • probot
Let Len Wiseman director the next terminator and hire a new writer, though I did enjoy Salvation. It took the bad taste of T3 away for me.
  • bomberman
Okay. You want Len Wiseman to handle the next terminator? Contrary to your prior statement, you're not a terminator fan.
  • probot
I happen to enjoy Live Free or Die hard. It proved he can direct great action sequences and humor. My first choice would be James Cameron but you're a fool if you think he'll return.
  • Fir3Wolf
Like most people I'm a big fan of the first two Terminator movies and not so much of the last two. They should just leave this franchise alone before we start forgetting what made the series so great in the first place. Salvation was better then T3 but that is really not saying to much.
  • "Terminator Returns to Return Again For Salvation: The Prequel: In 3D."
  • RJBlakeAAU
Give them 100 million dollars and slap my ass. This is greenlit now!
  • Palmer
I'd rather have the return of the Sarah Connor Chronicles rather than a sequel to Salvation.
  • saeseetom
I'm of two minds. I hated Terminator: Salivation with a passion, and I want the series to be officially over, like Jurassic Park, so nothing worse can happen.

But, I wish someone like Cameron would come in and maybe produce a 5th that would end it on a high note.

    To Hell with McG.
  • Projectionist!
i totaly agree with what you put on your Blog for Terminator Salvation which idid not like, bring back Cameron for the 5th film if there is one, who ever own's the Terminator Franchise in the end, unless they get back Cameron for 5th film to give it the flair that the first two movies had it won't be the same as Mc G Terminator salvation was just a load of mixed up Crap!!
  • Vrangsinn
That sequel being planned by McG, with time travel to 2010 or some crap like that is absolutely hideous. I would rather cut off my veins
  • frank
yea YO HE WANTS TO HAVE ALL THE MACHINES AND CONNER AND RESISTANCE COME BACK THEY FIGURED OUT A NEW FORM OF TIME TRAVEL AND NOW ANYTHING CAN COME BACK ITS A NIGHTMARE
  • frank
Ok well this is i think they defintally need to continue the terminator series but def consider not us McG. Terminator Salvation seemed like the person who made it never watched a terminator movie before. There were so many gaps on the story line plus lots of mistakes in filming. It was just all action no story or emotion, i thought the terminator in T2 had more human qualites than Conner in this one. and now i read an article about McG wants to use this idead in T5 were everyone comes back in time to present time even all the machines and they fight the war than. theres room for a great movie dont butcher and cut this thing stay true to the story
  • Allara
It would be nice for Cameron to reacquire the franchise, especially with his new camera that affords actors a younger appearance. (Michael Biehn, anyone?) Joss Whedon would also be a fun prospect too because he would satisfy T:SCC fans by putting Summer Glau at the helm.
