Jon Landau has collaborated with James Cameron in producing both Titanic and Avatar and, with a bit of luck and a following wind, will go on and collaborate with him further in the future. But on which projects, exactly? Talking to the French magazine Le Film, Landau has given some indication of which pictures Cameron is planning to tackle next: his long awaited manga adaptation Battle Angle Alita, underwater romance The Dive and even a sequel to Avatar.

After the break, how Landau pitched the premise for that follow-up to this year’s most hyped movie.

Of course, he didn’t say much but Landau did offer a tantalising hint of what premise the sequel might have. Here’s my translation:

If the public likes Avatar, it’s a possibility. After all, here we are exploring the surface of the planet Pandora. The interior remains to be seen.

Beneath the Planet of the Na’vi, anyone? Yes please.

Cameron has definitely spent a lot of time on painstakingly creating an ecosystem for his fictional world. If it truly is holistic, then he must already have some idea of what lurks beneath the crust.

This is all dependent on Avatar being a suitably successful picture, of course… but what ’suitably successful’ means for a film with such a mammoth budget, I don’t know and can hardly dare guess. Will he have to outdo his own Titanic smash? Is that even possible?

Here’s Landau on the other two projects, both of which are talked about as though set in stone, though I’ve learned the hard way to never trust such promises, especially in translation:

We’ll go on to Battle Angel Alita and The Dive, a love story in the middle of a dive. James is directing both projects.

Beautiful. I’m assuming The Dive will be one of his tank-based projects with actors submerged below real water, far away from the relative comfort of the motion-capture ‘volume’. He must be craving a bit of physical danger round about now, surely?

I'm still wondering why Battle Angel isn't moving forward quicker...since all the pre-production artwork was completed the same time as Avatar..along with all the technology needed was developed for it and is ready to go...also the script was being written by Cameron himself during that long period of post-production...I'd hate to see him do the Dive first even more so an Avatar sequel...

I'd rather him keep working on science fiction originals, Avatar looks like it could be great...but I'd love to seem him continuing his concepts..rather than sticking to just one...he got bored with it after Terminator 2.. I'm sure after Avatar 2 it could happen again...
  • AWhitman
    Avatar Tw--I'm there.
  • Christopher_M
really? what kind of film could there be after a war between the humans and Nav'ai?....sounds like the sequel will just be a Nav'avi focused snooze-fest
  • Be consistent, Bro. "Nav'ai" or "Nav'avi"?
Pick one. Or the right one, "Na'vi."

Now, Cameron's already done a whole universe for Avatar. An entire universe, character's histories, motives ways of life, traditions... and not all necessarily explored within the film.
The man's done enough work to span a couple of trilogys, about 20 novels, several videogames, a comic book series and a series of japanese animated shorts.
With what he's done SO FAR.

I doubt he'd have to reduce himself to explore something he isn't as interested in.
  • Christopher_M
just because I made a spelling mistake doesn't make me less right...if Cameron goes and makes a bizzare and boring film about those aliens who look like elvish-smurfs...you'll stop defending a movie you haven't even seen yet...my opinion is based on the same amount of things you have, you like what you've seen...I'm not impressed with the alien/Pandora aspect of the film...the creatures look like rejects from a Star Wars prequel
  • RJBlakeAAU
I do not understand why people think Avatar is the most hyped film this year. It is in the film industry and to movie geeks like us, but for the general public, there is very little interest. I have heard more people think the movie looks stupid and like a bad video game than anything.

Truthfully, and this is sort of sad to say, the most hyped film this year was probably Transformers 2. I think Avatar is going to be a huge failure.
  • BrendonConnelly
I guess I'm separating hype from paid marketing.
  • Christopher_M
I have to agree I don't think anyone I know has even heard of this film...average moviegoers are in the dark about this film...I blame 20th Century Fox's marketing team, which is going to have to make up for their mistakes soon...it's coming out in like two and half months and it doesn't seem to be on anyone's radar besides film blogs.....the hype and expectations are coming from Fox and blogs, not audiences...

I also blame the horrible way Avatar Day was handled..combined with Cameron and Landu making their way through the industry circuits to promote this film...they aren't doing enough to present the story or even the characters to the general public...I know more about the motion capture technology than I do about the characters and story....

If Fox had someone like Jim from MarketSaw calling the marketing shots I think more moviegoers would know and care about Avatar being released...

I still think seeing Avatar 2 being made is the least on anyone's priorities when thinking about seeing a new James Cameron film....Battle Angel is much more wanted considering it's existing fanbase and the possibility to see Cameron return to R-rated science fiction...

If you think Transformers 2 was a hyped film by actual cinephiles I'll let you figure out why you're an idiot.
  • Christopher_M
well Peter from /Film and Frosty from Collider made us think Transformers 2 was going to be the second coming of Christ...the same thing about Terminator Salvation...they do mislead us with their personal excitement for projects
  • Drew
    Haha you were so wrong.
  • RJBlakeAAU
haha Oh, I know. I was just talking to somebody about how wrong I was about almost everything Avatar.
  • nemon
Even if Avatar wasn't so mind-bogglingly expensive, even if it didn't look like a remake of Ferngully, it'd still have to face Sherlock Holmes: period adventure film (think Pirates of the Caribbean) starring Robert Downey Jr.

Christmas will be a bloodbath and Cameron's credibility as a big-budget action filmmaker will finally be expended.
  • Christopher_M
Avatar will have a full week before the release of Holmes...I think it's going to make a majority of it's money on opening weekend and from international box office...while I think Holmes could be a threat to Avatar's overall numbers it won't hurt it as bad as you think...
  • super_aj
Here's the deal. No one in my family has even heard of Avatar other than myself. Thats not a good thing for the film. None of my friends or co-workers even know it exists. I've tried explaining it to a few, and they think it sounds stupid. Fox needs to get their shit together and start pushing this movie. let people in on just what it is. Start selling it as the first film from the director of Titanic in 12 years, or something like that. Because people still love that movie, and remember just how much of a pop-culture phenom that movie was. Just hype it as the biggest film ever ever ever made! and people might be a little bit more interested. Average movie-goers are very stupid (you all know that already though). They need to figure out how to sell it, because at the moment, us movie geeks are the only ones who even know what the movie is.
  • DrLickies
The movie doesn't come out until the end of December. "Average moviegoers" don't need to be marketed to this early - they simply won't remember.

That said, I've seen an Avatar trailer before every movie I've seen for the past month, so I'm not sure I agree that it's not being pushed.
  • Christopher_M
really? I have yet to see a movie with the Avatar trailer attached to it and I've been going to the movies on regular basis since the trailer was released online...

super_aj has a point I mean people know months in advance when a film like Sherlock Holmes or Iron Man 2 is coming out...and we're talking average moviegoers...he also brings up a big problem the story isn't simple and it's odd to explain to others....people think it's an awful sounding movie, while it will more than likely be cool...

this 2nd trailer is really going to tell the story because the first trailer is beyond confusing for people unaware of the world of James Cameron...

it's beyond idiotic to believe just because Cameron's name is attached this can't flop because of bad marketing..we've seen a few large movies in our time tank at the box office because they're confusing to moviegoers...Watchmen for an example was too odd and long for audiences and under performed in theaters...
  • super_aj
I haven't seen the teaser attached to anything yet. So it's interesting that you can't seem to escape it. Also, Christopher makes an excellent point when he says that average movie-goers already know about iron man 2, I know that for a fact because it was plastered on the cover of Entertainment Weekly in every grocery store by the registers a few months ago, and that doesn't come out till next summer! So your point about advertising too early doesn't exactly hold up. I know a lot of people excited to see Alice In Wonderland, & that doesn't come out for a long while either.
  • Daniel1246
How can Avatar be "this year’s most hyped movie" if most of the general public doesn't even know it exist?
  • Christopher_M
I think this movie could be the biggest movie nobody knows about...Cameron's plan to make this film a big secret has worked to the point the general public lost interest or is clueless about it...Fox marketed the shit out of their awful films over the last couple of years and this one is getting the least attention
  • Daniel1246
Oh, and the people i show the trailer to said it looks like - and i'm quote - "A dumb Disney movie".
  • Christopher_M
I still think it looks like a Star Wars prequel...

it seems to me this is just a way for Cameron to become a marketing genius like Lucas...he's created his own kid-friendly world similar to Star Wars...more than likely to sell the video game and toys, which he gets a piece of similar to Mr. Lucas...I still think it was bizzare we've seen more marketing from the video game than the movie...
  • Daniel1246
The irony is that i heard kids who watched the trailer said they don't want to see the movie because it looks "Too scary". Now that's a problem. Seriously, how can this movie could possibly earn his enormous (250D, if i'm not mistaking) budget back, especially when only a week later he will have to face Sherlock Holmes?
  • Christopher_M
there is always room for two big movies to make money...I think even Holmes could be more of a family movie than Avatar, hence the Christmas release date...now do I think Avatar will get the same amount or more than Holmes in the end...doubtful...I think the numbers for Avatar's budget have been inflated because of how much Titanic cost...I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar really cost 100-200 million to make...not the bloated 300million that has been rumored
  • Daniel1246

  • I look forward to seeing Avatar fail spectacularly. Not at the box office, but before my very eyes -- on the screen... if Avatar Day is anything to go by (and it should be) I am going to struggle to buy into this 'film'.
  • Christopher_M
this an experiment for Cameron in motion capture/CGI technology along with how to create merchandising from his films... I don't know if it was the art of film making that was the motivation this time around.. I think he developed the cameras and the film to sell these cameras and technology to the film industry....rather than focusing on making a great movie for audiences
  • So he failed on both accounts, then?
  • Christopher_M
I wouldn't be surprised if the video game outsells the movie
  • waqman
So...you're gonna go watch this in theatres then to see it "fail spectacularly"? Congratulations, your dislike for this film just earned it ten more dollars.
  • Seventeen dollars plus, actually -- I'll be seeing it in Australia where we get charged through the nose to see films. And yes, I must do it the honor of seeing it before I can legitimately pan it (or be impressed, either way). But I didn't say it would fail spectacularly at the box office. I expect it will make a mint. I said It would fail for ME, personally -- because it looks like absolute rubbish.
  • GregoryV
Ugh! The Dive? Another water film? Come on Cameron, give us another cyborg-robot film! Supposedly he wants to make Battle Angel a trilogy, might as well start now.
  • BDM
Can't wait for Battle Angel. It has potential to be the best manga adaptation there is, since it a) has a good director attached, b) explores territory that is more familiar to Cameron (Cyborgs, robot etc.) and c) is a lot darker than avatar will be (andhopefully they keep it dark)
  • Hi_there
Totally agree! We just need him to start filming it!!!! I'm hoping he makes Alita first, before Dive or A2, mostly because he's been promising that for almost a decade now.
  • gigaherc
Jesus, people, dissing Avatar is so outdated! Give it up!
It's like saying "epic fail" or "facepalm" - OLD fucking NEWS!

The movie will be a great ride, maybe revolutionary, but it is still only a movie!
  • C Nizzak
All a film needs is some commercials in front of football games on Sunday and the baseball playoffs and this film will be fine. A lot of people didn't have the Sixth Sense, The Matrix, and numerous other films on their radar months b/f release and they seemed to make boatloads of cash.
  • mchops
James is the man. I'll support any movies he comes up with.
  • Christopher_M
there's a difference between being a fanatic and blindly enjoying somone's work...did you watch his documentaries?
  • mchops
No I haven't seen them chris but I would like to. Do you know where I
can find them? But yes, I usually do like everything cameron.
  • Christopher_M
you can rent them I would assume...but they aren't anything to talk up...I mean if he believes he could find the bones of Jesus, he's a bit off his rocker
  • mchops
He may be off his rocker but he makes movies that mix great action
    with great stories IMO.
  • waqman
Call me crazy but I'm seriously disappointed at the lack of hype for this film. Not because of the trailer (I thought the design choices were abit lame), but because of the fact that JAMES CAMERON IS BACK MAKING SCI-FI/ACTION FILMS. Honestly I'll take this blue alien so-called "Disney film" over a Michael Bay, Brett Ratner, McG, Stephen Sommers etc. crap fest any day. And you may hate the way the aliens look, but I'm sure Cameron is going to deliver some truly epic set-pieces.

Giant walking talking transforming robots? Puhleaaase. I'll take blue fairy-elves (lol) riding dragons and rhino-monsters taking on choppers, tanks and mechs. Seriously, this is going to be one enjoyable ride.

And so-called "official budget" is at 238 million, lower than Harry Potter 6 and Spiderman 3. Yes you heard me, those cheap looking films (with really bad CG work) cost more than Avatar. And most of the Avatar money went to R&D too. I think some people are just bashing this film way too unfairly. Cameron's an overhyper, no reason for you to fall under his spell.
  • Name
I think most of you are idiots! This movie will be great! If you had any idea in your mind that the movie wouldn't be good then why would you go see it? I know there are movies that I would like to see that I never end up seeing in the theaters and sometimes I dont' even get around to seeing them unless I remember to on DVD. So why would you waste your time and money to go see something you thought would suck. Easy fix! Don't see it. Personally I can't wait to see the movie. I think it will be great visuals with a great story. It's finally something new and different. And I will be willing to bet a pound of Unobtanium that all the people who claims this movie will bomb, will go see it. AND I bet you they like it... A LOT!

---Hey there ye techno circle-jerks of the comfort-zone!
--Catch this! Long rich and decades stale James Cameron
is taking massive funding and market favors from the most
awesomely genocidal (---that's 70 million people 'mssing'
in 'peacetime') regime in history ---across the Pacific!

It's his job to keep you all hypnotized with his glorified
soft-porn screensavers in order to keep you from developing
any quality consciousness around these unfolding revelations.

Of course, that's probably not going to be hard seeing that
media-enabled America has yet to even face its own
45 million exterminations of the unborn.

SO ---enjoy those over-produced circle-jerk fantasies!
---cause people are dying for them ---by the tens of millions...

    AMEN

Avatar is THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Mibro012
I went to see the movie AVATAR. Awesome!!! i'll go back with my 2 daughters ,and i'll buy the blu-ray as soon it get's out. It's a bit like Dance with wolfs : white man learning the ways of the natives and discovering that they are way more civilised than any soldier or businessman will ever be like it is still today.
  • Craig Franks
I watched the movie Avatar tonight.....I am very disappointed. How can you make a movie that makes people hate the U.S. Military even more than some people already do? I am in the military, U.S. ARMY, and it really bothers me that you would make a movie that would have people, like at the theatre i was at, standing up and clapping while U.S. Soldiers are dying. We gladly die every day so that you can have the freedom to make such a movie and it really disappoints me that you repay our men and women by making people hate them. I regret that i ever allowed myself to go see this movie. Craig Franks US Army
  • Andy Levesque
i am sory or you i am in military too but i dont the same view. in the movie they are not realy US military, they work only for a pay check. In US you work for that but also for your contry and your other people. What you should unterstood in the movie its tha the HUMAIN try to destroy the planet like we are doing now. have you seen the real beauty of the nature?? Have you feel the connection when you seen the movie?? the movie is not about US military dieing. Its about of good and bad, the connection with nature and we must realize what we do now at our own planet.
I am in Canadien Force. I am Military and seriously i never see the movie like you do but i unterstand your point of view. Please go see it again and try to see the real message behind the movie.
PS: Sorry for my broken english i am french from Québec.
  • Christian
Its not technically the US military- its a mercenary force hired by a corporation.

Much like Blackwater i suppose- and lets face it their clearly not ruining a native land :/
  • guest
So much for the trolls claiming this would-be alien/smurf movie would be a failure, so far i've seen it 3 times, and now that its been out a month, the 2 theatres in my city have been sold out for EVERY showing and continue to be sold out forcing people literally to purchase tickets very early in the day or even the day before.

And btw for the egotistical retards that think this movie somehow correlates to the US military are retards. The militants in the movie are MERCENARIES working for a corporation with no moral qualms so long as they have a "Good quarterly profit".
