Speaking to MTV News, Keanu Reeves has offered up a slight update on the live-action adaptation of the anime series Cowboy Bebop, in which he’ll be playing the lead role of Spike Spiegel. Reeves mentions that a draft of the script currently exists, penned by Peter Craig, but it’s apparently too elaborate to be filmed. The current script would require a budget of near-Avatar proportions—Reeves mentions that Fox thinks it would cost around $500 million.

Of course, those numbers are pretty speculative. Still, it’s heartening to know that Craig is thinking big with his adaptation of the classic anime series. I would rather he have to strip down a script with elaborate ideas instead of come up with a feeble version of Bebop from the get-go.

The world of Bebop is one dense with a variety of science fiction ideas, from hyper-space to terraforming, all mashed together with noir and Western elements to form a singular universe of cool. There’s no doubt that it’s going to be an expensive film to get off the ground (I’m thinking realistic sets for the Bebop ship, and complicated digital effects in many shots are a must), but it could probably be done for around $100 million.

Unlike many fans of the series, I think Reeves could make for a decent Spike Spiegel if he loosens up a bit (though there are certainly better choices out there). The fate of this project will rest not so much in Reeves, but in whoever they get to direct. My current dream scenario is that Brick and The Brother’s Bloom director Rian Johnson gets involved. With his previous work, he’s proven that he can tackle noir and crime-caper stories— and the fact that he’s also an anime fan certainly doesn’t hurt. Francis Lawrence, who managed to turn Constantine into a fairly fun romp (and did a great job with a good chunk of I Am Legend), is another possibility.

If they got Rachel Weisz signed on as Faye Valentine, and perhaps Terrence Howard as Jet Black, I think they’d be well on their way to a decent adaptation. A Yoko Kanno score couldn’t hurt either. Unlike Akira, Bebop is a series that could work well as a live-action English film, so I’m hoping for the best with this project.

Discuss: What do you think of the increasing reality of a Cowboy Bebop adaptation? Is the idea of Reeves as Spike getting easier to accept? Who would you like to see fill out the other members of the cast?

  • Hmm, Reeves is an interesting choice but I think Josh Hartnett would be a perfect for the role of Spike but seeing as they've already made there decision it seems pointless to complain. Laurence Fishburne would make a good Jet Black and I hate to say it but Megan Fox could be a decent Faye Valentine. The role of Ein is almost impossible to cast I wouldn't even know when to begin.
  • Do you mean the role of Ed? :P Fishburne is another good choice--
  • MatthewMiddle
Ed is an interesting dilemma. A reunion of Morpheus and Neo would be cool. Rachel Weisz as Faye Valentine?? What are you smoking? I'd rather it be Malin Akerman.

Sounds like it will be a while and Keanu isn't getting any younger, hopefully they'll get this thing going.
  • Malin Akerman? So you don't want Faye to speak at all in the film? :P
  • LOL, right I do mean Ed. I imagine it will be pretty easy to cast the dog. And acutally I thought Rachel Weisz for Faye Valentine but even though they never gave her actual age in the show it was implied that she was in her early 20's and Rachel Weisz is 39.
  • killerchopsticks
Faye is technically in her late 70s with being in cyrogenic for over 50 years, haha ;)

But yeah, I do agree. And the same technically is applied to Reeves who is 45 years old now. Spike was like 27 in the anime.
  • Dr_Handsome
Weisz really won me over in The Brothers Bloom and she shows she's able to be funny as well as dramatic but I still don't see her as Faye. Someone above said it well: Faye is supposed to be a bombshell and Weisz is more cute. Not to mention she's a little old for the part.

As the rest of the fans said: Kanno is a must.
  • Kevin
Rachel Weisz is a bobshell, great actress as well, she would be a perfect Fay. Megan Fox? God no.
  • I don't think they need Yoko Kanno. They'll have the money to buy all the Rolling Stones and Miles Davis songs they want.

I do agree though that Keanu is kind of perfect for Spike. If anyone googles them they'll see nice little comparison shots of the two. Plus Spike is pretty low key, which suits Keanu's style.

However, Terrance Howard seems like the complete opposite of who Jet is. He's got a soft voice, doesn't look hardened in any way, and is younger than Keanu. Maybe Fishburne and Megan Fox would actually work well. And if you could make Summer Glau 12 years younger, she could be Ed. Damn, I'm really psyched for this movie!
  • Kanno definitely found her own groove with the Bebop soundtrack, it won't be the same if they just license stuff.

Howard may have a soft voice, but Jet is actually pretty laid back in his own way. I also disagree about him not seeming hardened--I thought he fashioned himself pretty well in "Hustle and Flow" and "Four Brothers".
  • GregoryV
    Okay, I got it.

    Jeffrey Wright as Jet
    Dakota Fanning as Ed
  • After her turn in Push, I don't think Fanning can ever really be naturally quirky--
  • blissdev
I disagree, I liked her in Push. I think she's doing a good job of making the transition from child actor to "adult" actor?
  • GregoryV
They should cast Ein from one of Queen Elizabeth's dogs. haha
  • d
With no Kanno then why bother calling it Bebop? The music was as much a part of it's appeal than the stories.
  • Kanno's Bebop music owes a lot to real songs though. And there are so many specific music references in the show that it would feel weird if that was all ignored. By the way, the Knockin' on Heaven's Door soundtrack was not nearly as good as the series music so who knows if she's still got it in her.
  • Craig
I'll have to disagree with you there. The Bebop film's soundtrack is incredible. Not quite the heavy hitter like O.S.T.'s #1 and #3, but pretty damn close.
  • iec
    this is the truth.
  • slayer2372
It'll be interesting to see what they'll do with the series..... though I seriously doubt they'll be able to capture the feel of the show... or if Reeves could pull of Spike.
  • mudywaters
I love Keanu Reeves and Cowboy Bebop so I'm excited about this. Rian Johnson is my favorite up and coming director and I think he would be perfect for this. Not only is he a fan, but a great filmmaker, like you said Devindra, who can tackle noir and crime-caper stories.
  • Yawn, there already is a Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Series/Movie, it's called Firefly/Serenity and it's even better than the original.
  • Yah that doesn't make any sense at all.
  • So you haven't seen Firefly?
  • CooperKai
I don't think anyone that wants their fill of live action Cowboy Bebop can find solace in Firefly/Serenity. Bebop is more of a jazzy cyberpunk about gangsters while Firefly is kind of a western about Star-Wars-like rogues. It's like comparing Pulp Fiction to Tombstone.
  • Yes I've seen Firefly, but aside from having a rag tag people in space they're not really similar at all. You're being dismissive for no reason.
  • Hi_there
This thread of comments is fail. Firefly is not Cowboy Bebop, nor does it come off AT ALL like a reference to Bebop. The only thing they have in common is they are set in space, in the future.... THAT'S IT. And it's common sense that Bebop is one of the greatest series of all time, Ever. Firefly wasn't that good... Serenity, was much better but they're not even in the same league as Bebop.
  • Better question is have you seen "Bebop?" "Firefly" seemed to take inspiration from the earnest, un-ironic westerns before the likes of Sam Peckinpah and the Italians began to tinker with the established archetypes. Love it or hate it, in "Bebop", you had touches of old school and revisionist westerns, Hong Kong movies, jazz and blues music, Alfred Bester's "The Stars My Destination", and tons of other flourishes that made it incredibly derivative/familiar yet incredibly unique at the same time.
  • Where am i dismissive? I think that Cowboy Bebop has a lot of similarities to Firefly, guess it's an opinion-thing because every time i watched an episode of Firefly i was thinking about Cowboy Bebop.

@CooperKai: Jazz Cyberpunk? Erm, maybe you should google the term "Cyberpunk" because Cowboy Bebop is VERY far away from it. BLAME! is Cyberpunk. And i also think that Cowboy Bebop is more like a sci-fi western than anything else. Especially if you consider the Name and most of the themes which appeared in the series. Example: The first episode.
  • I always looked at Serenity as an alternative to the Cowboy Bebop movie I'd never get.

Serenity also reminds me of another anime. Special military experiment chick in a suitcase... sounds familiar... *cough*outlawstar*cough*
  • d
The same was said when Firefly/Serenity was made. "Awww they're just rippin off Bebop!!!"
  • GregoryV
Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz have a great relationship on screen but I really don't see her as Faye Valentine. But then again, The Bloom Brothers showed the range she has.

Rian Johnson and Francis Lawrence would be a great choice and I'll support that. The roles for Jet and Ed, nothing really comes to mind. For Ed, I don't know which actress would play this quirky character.
  • Steve
Rachel Weisz? Gods no... I'd much prefer Anne Hathaway.
  • Itri12
Yeah you obviously didn't see Brothers Bloom.
  • solarguardian
Why don't we get an unknown to play her? like, that'd be easier. Really. Plus we need someone from 18-24 or something around that age span.

Also, who ever plays Spike better do his walk right! (if you don't know his walk, it's when he puts his hands in his back pockets and does that weird thing with his legs) Oh! and keep his funky shoes too. man do i love those shoes.
  • yomiko
Personally, for me the ONLY requirement is a Yoko Kanno score. Do whatever else you want, without the music it isn't Bebop. Besides, Americans need to be much more aware of one of the best living composers in the world.
  • D
    Totally agree!

No Kanno, and you don't have Cowboy Bebop. Her music was perfect.
  • ryan1
Absolutely no Terrance Howard or Rachael Weisz. Those are terrible choices. You have to have a hard ass for Jet, which terrance is not, and a smoking hot faye, which rachael is more cute. I saw somewhere someone mentioning Katy Perry as Faye which I think she looks the part but I doubt she can act. Fishbourne would work for Jet for sure.

Ed could be played by Dakota Fanning or maybe Michelle Bresdin.

    Who would play Vicous though?
  • GregoryV
    Gary Oldman as Vicious
  • ryan1
He's not as insane anymore since Batman Begins and I think he looks too old now.
  • GregoryV
He's only 6 years older than Keanu, not too much. He just needs to channel his inner Sid Vicious-Sirius Black. haha
  • ryan1
I guess i haven't see the harry potter films so I didn't see that role. He may only be 6 years older but he just looks a lot older to me. Maybe its the hair and mustache as Gordon that is throwing me.
  • Dr_Handsome
I believe him 100% when he says they'd need a lot of dough to make this into a movie. Some of the locations and buildings on the show have this grand feel that doesn't scream low-budget.
  • fanboy_d
*sigh* somebody needs to fix this 'comment approval' thing...
  • dagreenman18
I think James Franco would be better suited to play Spike. As for the rest of the cast, it;s a tough call. The characters are so unique in my head that it's hard for me to think of an actor or an actress to play them.

But the truth is, i hope this project never gets off the ground. At least in this incarnation.
  • iec
James Franco is a good call, but I don't think his hair/skin tone really match well. I can't see him as the character, but I can see him playing him.
  • gacktdear
James Franco could pull off the Spike look. As long as he learned how to be Spike-level cool and act a little, yeah it could work. Personally, my choice is Joseph-Gordon Levitt. Of course he'd need to buff up a little bit. And he's young enough for it too.
  • ScanCase
What I don't understand is why the budget is so high. The series has a good amount of scifi space chases and ship battles but nothing more than what was in the Star Trek reboot. Most of Bebops story takes place in the slums of various planets. Bebop was never about spectacle it was about the characters, so this news has me worried that they're turning it into a scifi adventure film instead of a noir film.
  • evilmonkeyg1
I think the problem is that I can't see anyone be spike but steve, although I do have hopes just because unlike most anime live action american movies (although really it's like 3 at this point) this just sounds so good on paper. Mainly because bebop is very american to begin with. *crosses fingers* please be awesome.
  • oh the humanity
This movie is number one on my "projects that need to spend eternity not getting made" list.
  • octoguy
Fox seems to be really good at name dropping.

This movie will be that, there's no way that can live up to the original series (or the movie, 'Knockin' on heaven's doors').

It's sad to see another good story rapped.
