A lot of people go to film school to do sissy things like ‘network’ and ‘make contacts’. Werner Herzog laughs at you. While you’re making a film about the evolution of your bedroom, Herzog is going to be teaching the real filmmaking skills of a master to small groups of hand-picked students. What will you learn from the guy who directed Aguirre, Grizzly Man and the new Bad Lieutenant? Important stuff, not like how to shoot (film), but what it’s like to be shot at. With bullets.

The official site of Herzog’s Rogue Film School explains who the courses are aimed at:

The Rogue Film School is not for the faint-hearted; it is for those who have traveled on foot, who have worked as bouncers in sex clubs or as wardens in a lunatic asylum, for those who are willing to learn about lock-picking or forging shooting permits in countries not favoring their projects. In short: it is for those who have a sense for poetry. For those who are pilgrims. For those who can tell a story to four-year-old children and hold their attention. For those who have a fire burning within. For those who have a dream.

Ok, but what will it teach?

The Rogue Film School is about a way of life…How do you sensitize an audience? How is space created and understood by an audience? How do you produce and edit a film? How do you create illumination and an ecstasy of truth?…Related, but more practical subjects, will be the art of lockpicking. Traveling on foot. The exhilaration of being shot at unsuccessfully. The athletic side of filmmaking. The creation of your own shooting permits. The neutralization of bureaucracy. Guerrilla tactics. Self reliance.

The school won’t be an actual institution, but a series of weekend-long seminars taught by Herzog in various locations. The first is planned for January 2010, and will take place in a hotel in LA. No technical filmmaking concepts will be taught, and lapops are prohibited. Also forbidden: “talk of shamans, of yoga classes, nutritional values, herbal teas, discovering your Boundaries, and Inner Growth.” Thank god.

Even though I really think art should be what it nowadays mostly isn't ... Mr. H. seems to need money to finance his next couple of flicks. US $25 application fee - payable upon completion of the Application Form?! "Please note, your application and payment of US $25 do not automatically grant you admission to the Rogue Film School seminar." Plus: US $1450 seminar fee - for a WEEKEND! Use the money and buy a good camera (or in the spirit of Mr. H; steal it) and go out to create your films. Buy a copy of REBEL WITHOUT A CREW to read along the trip ... and you will be fine.
  • Yeah, that's what I've been telling my friends, if all Herzog's gonna do is tell me how to forge signatures and about his former glory days (let's face it, most people nowadays have no clue who he is), then I'd rather spend the $1475 actually making a movie.

Herzog has a real fetish for people who walk long distances. I guess he thinks it makes you a more genuine person.

I'm simultaneously amazed and indifferent. Amazed that Herzog is starting film classes. Indifferent because I doubt Herzog can give any students the gifts of his crazy magic. I hope someone films these classes.

  • I would like to check this out. I mean this seems like it would be pretty fun and who knows it could turn into a great experience and surprise us all, or at least me.

Either way, whether this fails or succeeds I'll be happy/satisfied/interested.

Right when I got my life figured out I read this inspiring text and all my wistful dreams of film-making return strong enough to make me want to travel to L.A. this holiday season and give Mr. Herzog my moneys.

If I was in the position to frivolously spend $1000+ to spend some weekends in a hotel room with Werner Herzog (mmmm...) I would, but this seems ridiculous. I'm usually on board with anything Herzog chooses to do, but this seems like a rip. This will be beneficial to some stoner bro living in Silverlake who saw Heart of Glass on shrooms, thought it was 'trippy' and decided to make films whichever down and dirty way he can.
