aronofsky heist

Darren Aronofsky is developing a gritty heist thriller based on “the daring robbery of the Securitas Depot in Tonbridge, a £53 Million Sterling score (around $86 million US) thought to be masterminded by former mixed martial arts fighter and UFC star ‘Lightning’ Lee Murray.” Screenwriter Kerry Williamson (who also adapted Denis Hamill’s novel Fork in the Road for Alexander Payne) is adapting the script, which Aronofsky is eyeing as a directing vehicle. Details after the jump.

The underlying rights package that includes an article from an April 14th 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated Magazine titled Breaking the Bank by Jon Wertheim, and the non-fiction book Heist: The Inside Story of the World’s Biggest Robbery by Howard Sounes. The Tonbridge Securitas heist, which took place outside of London in February 2006, is valued at over $85M USD – dwarfing previous cash hauls including the infamous 1963 Great Train Robbery and 1978 JFK Lufthansa heist.

On Wednesday, 22 February 2006, GBP53 million in bank notes was stolen from a cash warehouse belonging to the Securitas company in Tonbridge, Kent — a sum of money so vast that if the notes were stacked up they would equal the height of high-rise building. In terms of value, the Tonbridge Securitas robbery puts all previous famous British capers, such as the Great Train Robbery and the Brink’s-Mat bullion heist, in the shade; it also overshadows similar robberies overseas. Only in times of war have larger cash sums been stolen. This was a crime notable for its audacity, carried out in a small town in the Garden of England. A large number of people have been charged in connection with the Tonbridge robbery, with eleven men and women standing trial at the Old Bailey in summer 2007. Further details cannot be revealed at this stage, for legal reasons, but the full story will be told in Heist, by the author of one of the most successful true crime titles of recent years. Full of jaw-dropping detail and full of narrative pace, it will be the definitive account of these strange and compelling events.

This sounds like the perfect character-centered thriller for Aronofsky, who is quoted in the official press release as saying “The story is a very unique British heist tale with colorful London characters. I’ve always wanted to shoot in England and Kerry is the perfect writer to bring authenticity to this outrageous true bank job.” Williamson says that this project gives him “a chance to get back to my roots with raw, edgy, honest material.”

XYZ Films & Time Inc. Studios have partnered with Protozoa Pictures to produce the gritty heist thriller, with XYZ is fully financing the project’s development.

awwwwwww I'm excited, I hope he keeps working on this and it actually comes to fruition

By the way, Lee Murray isn't a UFC star. He fought one time in 2004 and hasn't fought for them since. I think the ESPN Mag article stated that UFC backed off after all the rumors started coming out or something like that.

thats because he kept going to jail after that dipshit

I personally think Aronofsky could direct a film about the life and hardships of a cardboard box and I would still be up for seeing it. :P

    That's Oscar material.
  • As much as I love the guy (he is my favourite working director and all) but he has a terrible track record of projects being announced then not happening. So I take this with a grain of salt. As a related note is Black Swan still on track to shoot this winter as I had read somewhere?

God bless Aronofsky! Burn me at the stake or what have you, but when I saw "The Fountain" I was a changed man. One of my personal all time favorites. Not to mention the rest of his work! Shit! With Black Swan and now this...I'm a happy man. :) btw...still hoping to see his vision for "Noah's Ark" come to fruition!
  • "Aronofsky" and "heist" in the same sentence resulted in a broner. Yes.

    Californication is the shit.
  • It will be interesting for him to do such film, thriller and action in the bank heist. Looking forward seeing this movie.

I don't think I have ever heard about this... This really happened?

If you can't talk about it for "legal reasons" what are they? Is it some sort of gag order because of the film or because it is an ongoing court case?
  • Anrkist
It did happen... all one need do is look it up on Google and you should find the information you need.

Let's hope it's better than BUSTER!

Hope we still get "Black Swan" and I'd really like to see a horror movie from this guy.
  • World's Biggest Heist Movie? C'mon! Danny Ocean could've pulled off $83 million in a heartbeat.

So is this coming after "Black Swan" or is he doing this instead of "Black Swan"? I think I read on / that Black Swan was to enter production by the end of this year.

    OH MY GOD!!
For the longest time, anybody who was a fan of Lee Murray wanted a movie made out of him! Now you're telling me a Darren freakin' Aronofsky is behind it!?! YES!!!
Lee Murray held his own in a fight with arguably the best fighter in the world (Anderson Silva) and was notorious for beating tons of people in streetfights (including UFC ex-champion Tito Ortiz). Funny part was he would go onto MMA websites and give us advice on how to win or stay away from barfights. He'd tell us his anecdotes and so did his friend [who worked in a bank?(coincidence?!)]. Even when he was a wanted man he logged on and said he was playing golf in Morocco. I think it was the biggest cash heist in history...? Anyway "colorful characters" indeed and if they cast right, Lightning Lee Murray will steal the show.

Can't wait for this movie, the kidnapping, the robbery, the investigation and arrests all through Aronofsky's eyes will be a sight to behold indeed!

Can I just say that this is a bit close to home. This only happened about 4 years ago and in reality a family were terrorised and the dad beaten (under the threat that his son and wife would be killed) up until he took the armed robbers to the depot, where they then beat up a lot of innocent workers. They stole the money but were promptly arrested in about a month, and are now all in prison. We've seen heist movies a billion times, but we've only seen one Robocop film

This actually isn't the largest heist. It was done in my hometown, Fortaleza, Ceara, in Brasil.

Thieves stole about 100 million dollars in cash from the Banco Central in downtown. They rented a house two blocks away and tunneled under the street and sewer and actually sold the soil as they were fronting as a gardening shop. The whole thing took about a month to execute and they have never found the mastermind.
  • just info
Wikipedia shows the amount stolen as US$69.8 million, whereas this heist was US$92.5 million.
