paranormal-activity

The Los Angeles Times has published a great article on Paranormal Activity, which features a bunch of interesting tidbits:

  • Steven Spielberg had taken a Paranormal Activity DVD screener to his Pacific Palisades estate, and not long after he watched it, “the door to his empty bedroom inexplicably locked from the inside.” The famous director was forced to call a locksmith, and returned the screener back to Dreamworks in a garbage bag, certain that his copy of the movie was haunted.

  • When DreamWorks made a deal to acquire Paranormal Activity, it originally didn’t include a theatrical release. The studio wanted to produce a bigger budget remake of the film with director Oren Peli (his original film would be included with the remake’s DVD).
  • The contract required DreamWorks to hold one test screening before starting the remake. Several screenwriters were invited to the March 2008 test screening in Burbank in the hopes of finding a scribe for the new version. Moviegoers began walking out of the screening, claiming they weren’t bored but scared. After the screening it was decided to release the original in theaters.
  • Peli is about to start filming his second feature, another original, found-video thriller called Area 51 which is described as a “claustrophobic terror”.

Read the whole article now on the Los Angeles Times website.

  • good lord hollywood is retarded. why not just give THIS film a wide release instead of remaking it for 50 million dollars or some other ludicrous amount.

Wow the Spielberg story is kind of creepy honestly. I'll watch this because there hasn't been a single horror movie to date that has ever really scared me. Startled me, sure but nothing that left an impression.

The trailer for this didn't phase me one bit either so I'm skeptical. Spielberg also found Transformer's ROTF to be "fantastic" so yeah...
  • locknarr
Have you seen Event Horizon? That's one of the scarier movies I've seen... maybe not so much scary as it was horrifyingly disturbing. That might make an impression, if you haven't seen it already of course... I think it's a pretty awesome sci-fi/horror movie myself.
  • Dr_Gonzo
Indeed, 'Event Horizon' and 'The Descent' and to some extent 'REC' for me were genuine scares. The latter two had that claustrophobic terror aspect that left me feeling quite uncomfortable afterwards. Good call.
  • Sunshine, on Blu-Ray, with Surround Sound is pretty fucking Scary at times. I love Space. And Sunshine.
  • mangoshakes
Spielberg was prob in "press" mode at that point.

"Spielberg also found Transformer's ROTF to be "fantastic" so yeah..."

The only reason he said that was because is the producer of the movie and a friend of Bay.
  • lmao_meh
Oh. Then it's okay to call a shitty movie "fantastic"?

Maybe because Spielberg has a vested interested in seeing this movie (Paranormal Activity) succeed, he's lying about it too.
  • daniel1234
    Wha..?

Is a friend of Bay and didn't want to insult him. Also, is the producer of the film so what was his benefit from saying it's crap?
  • lmao.meh
I'm not saying he had a benefit for saying ROTF was a good film. I'm just saying, people shouldn't consider Spielberg's opinion on a movie the gold standard since he obviously lies for his profit or to protect his friends' feelings. Similarly, seeing as how he owns a stake in Dreamworks (the company distributing Paranormal Activity), he's probably lying about this film too.

right. really creepy that Spielberg's production company is putting this out and he got sooooo scared!

This seems like pure hype, no?
  • Crashlander
Yeah, it's manufactured hype. I think we're getting better at detecting it these days. That Spielberg story is pure horseshit.
  • Dr_Gonzo
Blair Witch proved that the hype machine can sell almost any old crap and make a profit. Why not give the film a general theatrical release as it is and let the machine do it's work. So far the word of mouth on this movie has got me interested, the Spielberg story aside I'm genuinely interested to see it.

You know if I made a film for $11,000 and Steven Speilberg himself said it was scary, I'd be pretty proud! :P
  • Rockie
no such thing as bad press

the creators must be stoked upon hearing this
  • PH
This movie sounds great. I love a good scare.
  • Crashlander
I saw this recently - I'd lower your expectations significantly. There's nothing to separate it from THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, THE WICKSBORO INCIDENT, [REC], etc. It's too predictable by far.
  • Mike
Maybe it heard the news about the "Poltergeist" remake. That, or that it looks like there's going to be another Indiana Jones movie.
  • My old roommate went to the March 2008 screening here in Burbank (he's a horror aficionado). Anyway, the movie scared the holy bejesus outta him. Anytime I walked into his room for the following week after it, he'd jump, and he claims he was pretty much looking over his shoulder for nearly two weeks after seeing it. He definitely gave the movie a pair of thumbs, way up, and he rarely does that.
  • If that Spielberg bit is true, that is totally freaky.

    "If"

    omfg!
did the empty bedroom die 7 days later?
if not then spielberg totally made it up.
  • Soundwave_17
when I first saw Event Horizon as a teenager it freaked me out , I have to agree it is definitely disturbing.
  • amanda
This is by far the BEST scary movie ever made and to remake it would be stupid...and take away from the REAL original fear that sets into the human psyche...What a waist of millions of dollars...

A garbage bag is a good place for this movie.
