The Karate Kid Remake Art and Title

the karate kid

The saga of the ever-changing Karate Kid remake title continues. You might remember when we posted a couple set photos earlier in the week, we mentioned that the Will Smith-produced remake/re-imagining of The Karate Kid had been officially retitled The Kung-Fu Kid. A /Film commenter named videophonic forwarded us to some official art on Sony’s website which still features the old title. I don’t believe I’ve seen this art anywhere else online, so I thought I’d pass it along.

As you probably know by now, Jaden Smith plays Dre, a skateboarding video game buff who is forced to move to China after his single mother (Taraji P. Henson) is forced to transfer to the China for work. Of course, unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in, and gets beat up by the local bully. Jackie Chan plays Mr. Han (the Mr. Miyagi character), a maintenance man who spots Dre’s black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese, so he can defend against the students of Li Quan Ha’s Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu.

Directed by Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2) and written by Chris Murphy and Steven Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness). Filming on the remake has begun in Beijing, and is expected to last until mid-October.

So... This movie is totally unnecessary.

The original movie is so dated it's nothing but laughable for any kids today. If they do this movie right, it could be decent. But if the dialogue between Mr. Han and "Dre" is even vaguely reminiscent of Rush Hour's dialogue... it has the potential to be an exceptionally bad movie.

Not true, I have seen kids watch that movie even now and like it. The fact is you just need to start kids on the classics early.

they better change the name to The Kung Fu Kid on the Sony website asap.
  • Whoops. Just noticed your comment.
I left almost exactly the same thing you did...

Can you be any cooler then a skateboarding video game buff? Well, you could be a skateboarding video game buff that knows KUNG FU!!!

This is gonna be a disastor.
  • shitty movie..I could care less

I think it is about time someone remakes/re-images E.T., Goonies, and The Princess Bride. I am sure they can be made so much better with todays tech.
  • Veto. Classics are classics for a reason. The fact they stand the test of time so well is the exact reason they *don't* need remakes.

    Sarcasm! I like it LOL!

Remake with a title that they can "cash" off of. Thats what any remake is now. A cash cow to bring you to the theater to spend money on an unoriginal or stolen idea so that producer, director, etc. can show "their take" and you fork over your money on re-hatched "TRASH" they didn't come up. In other words F#CK this movie. And DO SOMETHING ORIGINAL for a change. A good film with an original idea would trump these SH!T remakes any day of the week. Peace.
  • I hope they bring Johnny back to sweep Dre's leg
  • "Get him a body bag..."

Why the splatters near his 'diaper area'? Was that picture taken the day that Jaden Smith's dad left the set and he wet himself?...Okay, maybe thats a low blow. But I mean come on, at what point do we reach the plateau of nepotism? Apparently the day Jaden Smith diarrhea-d himself and got put on a movie poster.
  • I really hope that this movie bombs horribly
  • Brad Engstrem Jr.
I don't get why they didn't stick with the remake's original title "The Blarate Blid". There was no reason to change it.
  • Nokeo08
Why the hell would you call it "Karate Kid"? When No.1 it's in China and is in no way karate (which is japanese) and No. 2 Everybody knows the story of The Karate Kid and the story in this is just insulting imitation to the original. All they are going to do is make a crappy movie and piss off fans of the original.
  • capawesome
Why is Medusa doing a high kick on the poster?
  • Mike
    ROTFL
  • Another movie cashing in on my childhood...
If they called it "The Kung Fu Kid" I might not have as much ill will towards it.

Too bad really, I'm a sucker for these fighting/underdog kind of flicks...
  • dashiel
they're just getting press. the constant name change is just to ensure people know it's a remake of the original. it will be called the kung-fu kid on release.
  • thank god we can see the cornrows
  • A remake of Karate Kid.

    I am not shocked.

Although this is a nice poster.

    Thank you for sharing! =]

And, if they name it the Kung Fu kid it would be a mistake, if youre going to remake it- dont beat around the bush.

  • videophonic
hey! peter, thanks for taking the tip awesome, so glad you noticed
  • Karate was pretty big in the late 70s and 80s when the original film was released. This remake/rehash has much less going for it.
  • Name
lame. sounds like the plot to tokyo drift. . .

Re-make Shme-make, we all know today's' films just suck. Stupid CGI and rotten stories, Idiot actors and nothing original. "FILLER". nothing sticks to the ribs anymore. I FEEL RIPPED OFF EVERY TIME. I used to go to the movies 3x a week in the 80s down to 1x a month in the 90s, now its 2x a year in the 2000. Now 2010 will be 0x - time to make my own film.
