After three days of no significant news, it’s crazy that the week’s biggest event went down literally at five PM Pacific on a Friday night. Dick Cook, the popular chairman of Disney who’s been working for the mouse house for the past 38 years (chairman for the last seven years), was fired tonight by CEO Robert Iger. Or did he leave? And, much more importantly, who will replace him?

THR reports that Cook left, and that report has become the Disney party line. “To wrap up my Disney experience in a neatly bundled statement is close to impossible,” Cook said in a statement. “But what I will say is, during my time at the studio, we have achieved many industry and company milestones.” Publicly, Iger has praised Cook today, but in the recent past he’s blamed Cook and Walt Disney Studios for “disappointing returns” from the film division.

Nikki Finke paints a different picture, saying that Cook was fired. The reasoning? According to one of Finke’s sources, “Iger has no reason to be happy with the label…Choices have been made that not only are unspectacular, but even poor. Not only have the movies lost money, which can happen to anybody, but they’ve also diminished the live action brand.” Indeed, Disney’s recent film releases have been a mixed bag, critically and financially. In a May conference call with analysts (PDF here), Tom Staggs, Disney’s CFO, remarked, “Some of our key theatrical releases, including Bedtime Stories, Race to Witch Mountain, and Confessions of a Shopaholic performed below our expectations and well short of last year’s slate, further dampening results.” Iger, on that same conference call, referred to the movie studio’s results as “disappointing.”

Other independent sources have also told me Cook was let go rather unceremoniously. “He got blindsided by Iger. He never saw it coming,” quotes Finke from an unnamed source. But she also reports that rumors of Iger firing Cook have floated in the past few months. Finke quotes another source about where things go from here: “I don’t know who Iger thinks he can find who’ll be able to come in there and already have relations with Spielberg, and Zemeckis, and Bruckheimer, and Lasseter, and Burton, like this guy had.”

So, if it’s not obvious, the question now is: who takes Cook’s place? No successor was named. Two big names have floated to the top of the list: John Lasseter, currently head of Pixar and Disney Animation, and Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios. Between the two, Lasseter seems favored for the gig, which, to me, seems like an unfortunate thing. I’d rather have Lasseter directly overseeing Pixar and Disney Animation, which seems like the perfect position for him. But he’s certainly worked hard enough, and is good enough, to take an expanded role in the company’s machinery.

Meanwhile, what might be the best part of the events tonight? Finke ran her piece at 5pm PST. THR ran their piece on Cook ‘leaving’ at 5:54 PST. But at 5:15 PST Peter Bart at Variety ran a piece called ‘Mouse maven remains cool, collected’, basically evangelizing Iger and his work at Disney. Mentions of Dick Cook? Zero.

Where is the evidence that the three titles given above have done "poorly"? Can someone please provide a link?

After 38 years of employment with Disney, given the ups and downs, then for the CEO to green light the firing or resignation based on three "key" instances that have been only recent but have fallen "well short" of expectations?

Okay? The past time with Disney should have spoken for itself providing he was fired and perhaps the higher ups may have given him that borrowed time.

    Harsh.

He had relations with Spielberg, Burton, Zemekis, Bruckheimer, and Lasseter? What a filthy whore!

Fuck that guy! He's presided over years of shit decisions at Disney and now that Lassetter's figuring some things out we're supposed to be sad when the board changes a dead bulb for a new one? Nope.

And they will do a Pirates 4. It's too high profile to let it go away, and Depp's signed for another two of them at the least.

When "heads" roll, you can expect some serious ripples. There will be others and then there will be a restructuring which will affect end product and not for the better.

Do they really work in there?

Steve Jobs needs to take over the whole damn place. Iger's the one who needs to be put out to pasture.
  • Name
If you're going to replace Iger, fine, but Steve Jobs is hardly a capable replacement. He runs Apple remember? That's responsibility enough, not to mention I highly doubt Job's creative vision. Apple has an amazing supporting cast.

Lasseter would be a good replacement, but I don't know if he's got the business savvy or the time to commit to such a responsibility.
  • Wait, are you saying this guy doesn't have the vision? The man who shaped computers as we have them today? The John Lennon of technology?

    ...
...Ehh, I'd agree with you. But I'm too stubborn on the guy.

Aye, friend. Technology, not filmmaking. That's where I doubt.

Please don't remove Lasseter from Pixar. Disney will sacrifice the smooth running of Pixar animation for untested chairman waters.

Any chance of someone new taking hold of the Theme Parks? Because they ran down hill since Eisner had his finger there.
  • I would love for Depp to back out of Pirates 4 as a result of this. Wishful thinking?

    I can't believe it...

Just last week he was giving us D23 members a peek into what the studio has to offer (while some a little disappointing [Prince of Persia and Sorcerer's Apprentice] and others promising [Tron Legacy, Alice in Wonderland, PotC: On Stranger Tides and a Muppets Movie]).

I can totally believe that Iger blind-sided him (as Cook appeared to be in good spirits and really excited for what Disney has to offer at D23).

I really hope that Lasseter isn't forced into being head of WD Studios as I'd rather see him continue his work with the animation department (where he seems to be fully enjoying himself).

Studios are ungrateful sometimes. When someone makes a couple of duds even though they have given birth to some great stuff yet they are still thrown onto the way side...

It amazes me that a guy like Tom Rothman still has his job yet Cook gets "dismissed". Thats straight bull.

This has also greatly upset Johnny Depp who was good friends with Cook.

"Depp, who recently appeared at the first official Disney convention, D23 Expo, to support both his role as the Mad Hater in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and the new "Pirates" movie, credited Cook with standing by his interpretation of the character Captain Jack Sparrow when others at the studio were questioning his un-Disney like direction.

Depp told the Times, "He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust. He's a rare beast.""

Depp is now reconsidering starring in PoTC 4 and will wait on the script to see if he returns or not.

So how long was the house of mouse planning this.

    I warned him.

Last night in New York I sais I "warned" fellow executive Dick Cook.

I was dining at the Wolseley restaurant in London when a reporter told me about about Cook's sacking.

After saying, "That's awful," I added “I warned him," but refused to elaborate.

He started out as a ride operator at Disneyland if I'm not mistaken. Then climbed his way up the ladder only to have this happen. Few stories on this mention that this happened right after the Marvel buy, but I've heard otherwise.

Holy sh!t are you serious!?!? I can't believe this....

Wait what exactly did he do and should we be sad or glad to see him get sacked?

I'm sure he had his hand in many major Disney pivotal moments but judging by the lack of knowledge strictly from his name I doubt it? Or he's just a behind the scenes type of exec...
