Youth in Revolt Moves to January 2010

Youth In Revolt

Youth in Revolt, the Miguel Arteta adaptation of C.D. Payne’s novel starring Michael Cera, has been doing well as it plays the Toronto International Film Festival. Reviews have, in general, been more pleased with the film than I would have expected. Peter liked it, Cinematical said Michael Cera is “wickedly hilarious” in a performance that is “easily the best of his career,” and indieWire says it suggests more versatility to Cera than some would have allowed.

But now, according to an email blast from PR firm Allied, The Weinstein Company is moving Youth from October 30 of this year to January 15, 2010. What’s the story?

The Weinstein Company has been the object of great speculation over the last few weeks. While Inglourious Basterds did much better than expected, the party line is that the outfit doesn’t have much money to throw around. There were rumors that Rob Marshall’s Nine was being pushed to next year (denied by TWC) and Harvey’s notable buy of Tom Ford’s A Single Man. That deal reportedly came with an Oscar promise to Ford. This is after a significant delay for The Road, which was finally set to release in October, but was then moved to a Thanksgiving date: November 25.

By this time of the year, Harvey Weinstein seems to focus on one thing: Oscar. And while Youth in Revolt is being pegged as a decent film, realistically speaking it is not an Oscar contender at all. A Single Man, on the other hand, is definitely a contender. Given that TWC doesn’t have a serious amount of money to throw around, the obvious conclusion to draw is that Youth is being pushed to make room for Tom Ford’s movie.

And the January date might not be a terrible one. There’s nothing like Youth in Revolt hitting then. The film will now compete with genre films Daybreakers, which opens the week before, and The Book of Eli, also opening Jan 15. TWC also has Hoodwinked 2 slated for the same date, but that’s no competition for Youth.

Meh. I'm still aggravated over Shutter Island.
  • RJBlakeAAU
Yea, Shutter Island is one that I think is totally idiotic and will not pan out with the Oscar race for 2010.

However, I'm disappointed. I was actually really looking forward to this film because I, for one, believe Cera can do something other than his usual awkward shy guy routine and I think this is really smart for him to do. A movie where he is in his comfort zone AND plays a different character? Smart way transition.

Agreed. I'm tired of Cera's type-cast character. Let him show us his real acting chops.

What the fuck. Like honestly if this is true I'll be so pissed. This movie has changed release dates so many times. It was originally supposed to be out in 2007 (according to IMDB at the time). Nothing came... then pushed to 2008... Nothing came. Then Feb of this year... Nothing came, I even have this magazine from february that talks about monthly release dates for movies. But it didn't come out. So it was pushed to Oct. And now, a month or so before it's release date It's being fucking moved to Jan? This is bullshit. Literally, a bull shat out this idea of moving it to Jan. These fucking people shouldn't even release a date. Who knows, it might be until 2012 until this finished movie (and has been finished for months now) comes out. The only reason why I'm being so anal about this is because Youth in Revolt has been my favorite book of all time since I was 12. (19 now), and it's just maddening to keep getting false hope. I've heard great things about this movie, the trailer looks phenomenal, SO JUST FUCKING LET IT COME OUT.

Did the entire entertainment industry secretly decide to fuck with us? First the game industry to move the entire fall lineup to spring, and now movies are following suit.
  • Damn it, I keep thinking that's a screenshot from Scott Pilgrim.

AS I PREDICTED THE FAILURE OF "TAKING WOODSTOCK" ( SEE MONTHS AGO ARTICLES) I WILL NOW PREDICT THE DOWNFALL OF MICHAEL CERA. HIS ACTING WILL GET BORING, PREDICTABLE, AND WILL TURN OFF FILM GOERS. THE END IS NEAR , ANNOTIUNG MAN!! THANK GOD!!
WHEN DOES THIS KID GO THROUGH PUBERTY? UGH...

    next !!!!
  • RussFischer
Yeah, because predicting the failure of Taking Woodstock took a real crystal ball.
  • Go easy on him Russ. Gajonka was also the only person predicting the failure of Imagine That as well. I look forward to his next predictions: "November to follow October!"
  • Curious. I saw Bob Weinstein at the screening that I was at in Toronto and he seemed very pleased with the audience reaction which was near-constant pleasure interrupted by huge bursts of laughter. Based on the ear to ear smile on Weinstein's face throughout the screening, I doubt the move had anything to do with them not trusting or being satisfied with the film. Sometimes these things just happened. I think it is possible that they are trying to stretch a sure thing into next year since this year is finally shaping up thanks to Inglourious. They probably want to start off next year with a little black.
  • Agreed, I was there too and people loved that movie. Youth In Revolt will do just as well for them in January as it would in October, and there's no reason not to push it if the Weinstein's think they've got an oscar contender to push.
