I love a good casting notice, meaning those that give away hitherto secrets of plot or dramatis personae. While we know that a Green Lantern picture is currently in preproduction, with Ryan Reynolds locked in to take the lead role, we didn’t know which other characters we could expect. I’ll put the info after the break, in case you are particularly sensitive to even the mildest of spoiling, but now we know at least which DC-universe villain - or villains? - it is that he’ll be facing off against, and which other key characters from the comics will be showing up.

The idea of including multiple villains in a comic book movie really seems to rankle some folks, so if you’re one of those, look away now, move along, find another picture to look forward to. According to the casting requirements uncovered by Spoiler TV, Martin Campbell and colleagues are looking to cast a pair of baddies:

[DR. HECTOR HAMMOND]
27-35, Character actor who is austere and impersonal, he is real “scummy.” He is a pathologist and also the son of a Senator.

[SINESTRO]
Mid-30s to Mid-40s, he is smart, tough, intimidating and in great physical shape.

If this is just an origin movie it’s possible that Sinestro won’t mutate from being our hero Hal Jordan’s mentor into the bad sort he quickly became, but I’m prepared to bet that switcheroo is key to the story - see Jeff Bridges’ role in Iron Man, I suppose.

Sinestro is one of the many alien characters in the Green Lantern mythos, though despite this he’s a dead ringer for David Niven. Another extra terrestrial is on the list too:

[ABIN SUR]
Mid-30s to mid-40s, he is a great warrior.

Acccording to those who know comics better than I, Abin Sur is the character responsible for recruiting Hal Jordan into the Green Lantern Corps. They also tell me that - spoiler alert - he’s dying as he hands his ring thing over to Hal Jordan, so it probably isn’t a huge part. What isn’t mentioned in this casting notice is that he appears to be completely bald.

The last outstanding character mentioned is:

[CAROL FERRIS]
26-32, a smart and attractive woman with an MBA. She started as a pilot and now runs Ferris Aircraft. She is a work-a-holic…FEMALE LEAD

Looking at that it seems her alter-ego Star Sapphire won’t be factoring in. Perhaps this lucky actress can expect at least a two-film contract, with the Star Sapphire business set to play out in a second film if the first is enough of a success? That’s a common play in recent superhero pictures.

Carol Ferris is a love interest for Ryan Reynolds’ Hal, who is a test pilot at Ferris Aircraft as well as being the Green Lantern in secret. I’d be most amused, perhaps even charmed, if Reynolds’ wife Scarlett Johansson ends up with the role.

Feel free to put your mind to suggesting potential players in the comments section below. I’d love to know who you come up with.

  • *Possible Spoilers speculating from the info above*
All the characters I expected to see in an origin story. Abin Sur is a small part as he finds Hal and just gives him the ring, unless they've expanded for the film. Also I expect Sinestro to be Hal's mentor for this movie and then turn villain at the very end for the sequel.
  • mangoshakes
i highly doubt Sinestro will be the "switcharoo" villain like in iron man. He's too important to the series to be just used like that. if it is like that, then he'd be the full on villain in the next. the real story is Jordan exposes Sinestro of running his home-planet/sector as a tyrant, which gets him expelled from the Green Lantern corps. he then finds his way to creating a yellow ring. villain.
  • Grantlol
If Sinestro is appearing in this film, I would expect to see the Green Lantern Corps appear also.
  • Hi_there
I doubt we're going to be seeing all the aliens from the GL Corps, nor Guy, John, Kyle, etc. This sounds like it's going to be a 1-man show which is kinda blah in my opinion. I don't even like Hal, I think he's the worst Green Lantern and he was far off better when he was the Spectre.

    Guy Gardner ftw.
  • mangoshakes
i understand from script reviews that this has full on GL Corps, complete with epic space space battles with the corps
  • Huh. You know your shite, dude.
I just wonder-- who'll be Kilowog? I mean, I don't think the physique will be played Live-Action, but wouldn't John DiMaggio be good? Just deepen the voice a tad... Then again, there are many other voice actors. Oh-- and I at least hope they'll get Guy Gardner in for this. Even if it's just a cameo role--
Or, maybe... With WB's DC Movieverse, they'll be able to do Blackest Night?!
Damn, I'm just so pumped with GL right now. Having just finished reading Sinestro Corps War and all!
  • mangoshakes
it's so good right now right? i've been dying to get my hands on Blackest Night 3, but i haven't been able to. but i highly doubt it's for movies, sci fi + zombies?? just wouldn't work with the audience. sinestro corps war however, if that ISN'T the sequel i will amazed at how stupid WB is. it's just perfect for a movie.
  • terry
Carol Ferris - Rachel McAdams or Emily Blunt
Dr. Hector Hammond - Jonny Lee Miller or James Caviezel
    Sinestro - Hugo Weaving
    Abin Sur - Doug Jones
  • I would love to Hugo as Sinestro and Doug Jones as Abin Sur
  • Craigasorusrex
I second those casting options. Really good choices.
  • dan
what about jason isaacs as sinestro and peter mensah as abin sur
  • ...MTL?
  • Sketch
    Good picks!

Personally I think Ryan would make a better Kyle Rayner than a Hal Jordan. You need someone almost a bit older in a sense. I would have taken Boreanaz or even Christopher Meloni if he had more hair on him.
  • greggorybasore
If they hadn't already cast him as Two-Face I'd say Aaron Eckhart would make a good Hal.
  • Comment and parent comment seconded highly. Ryan Reynolds as Hal shows such a lack of appreciation for the gravity of such an old-school character. Or maybe a conscious ignorance of it--could be they're actually making a likeable Hal Jordan.
  • EbonPinion
Suggestions over. Hugo Weaving is literally perfect.
  • greggorybasore
Hugo Weaving would be great as Sinestro. I also like Rachel McAdams for the leading lady. While I also think Jones would be good as Abin SUr, I'd hope they expand the role a little to give him more screen time.
  • papasanchez
Bravo on the casting. Good choices.
  • EricAD
Having read the first draft of the script, in that version at least Sinestro was a mentor and NOT a villain (just kind of a dick) And to answer someone's question...yes, the GL Corps appears as do the Guardians and OA. How do you do a GL movie without them?
  • dan
how comes no casting call for Thomas Kalmaku and Kilowog
  • Hassleberry
I hope David Boreanaz gets a part. I wish he was Hal, but I'll settle for him having a smaller part as long as he is in the movie.
  • jrice73
This is good news. The GL Corps and the Guardians will be there, you can guarantee it. I also don't think that Sinestro will go bad in this one but it would not surprise me if we are not introduced to his ideas on how justice should be handed out and how those ideas conflict with the Guardians and the rest of the Corps. Damn, it is good to be a GL fan right now with this film moving along and BLACKEST NIGHT kicking all kinds of ass in the DCU right now!
  • [A]
    Hey, cool (bit of) news.
  • ChrisBallard
If Scarlet Johansin is in this movie, she will ruin it like she has many others
  • Matt
You're right...I think really attractive women with acting abilities ruins movies
  • hshadows
They sure can. Like Halle Berry in Gothika or Penelope Cruz...in Gothika or Charlize Theron in Hancock or, oh I could go on and on.

Scarlett is too overused and doesn't bring as much to the table as a LOT of other actresses could. And I wouldn't believe Scarlet being Carol anymore than Steve Buscemi being Kilowog.
  • I just cannot buy into Ryan Renolds as a super hero. I get an uneasy feeling, like when Val Kilmer played Batman. Remember how that turned out?
  • kingbry7
While that movie sucks, it certainly wasn't because of Kilmer. I actually think he did the best Bruce Wayne of any of the actors.
  • I doubt ScarJo gets that role. She's just be coming off her spot in Iron Man. I don't think either company would risk confusing audiences with her playing two roles in super hero movies.
  • EbonPinion
If this is humor, I approve loudly.
  • greggorybasore
Very true. That would make as much sense as casting a supporting actor from one of the X-Men movies as the lead in a movie based on a DC character which would never.... oh wait a sec
  • AWhitman
there should definitely be a film law against this
  • Matt
I really do not think this movie is going to be that good. So far each successful superhero movie in the last few years has brought something new. TDK brought a real, gritty look and was the first comic book adaption to actually be considered a top movie (awards-wise). Ironman brought a cool, sleek look and featured a fast-talking, humorous actor that more or less carried the movie. Make no mistake, without RDJ's ongoing humor, Ironman would not have been even close to as well recieved.

This Green Lantern project brings nothing new. I already know how Ryan Reynolds is going to play Hal Jordan. There is nothing new and intriguing about this storyline. They are going to need some good other characters to make this movie legit.
  • Octoberist
I'm sorry but what is your opinion based on again? You mentioned elements of Iron Man and Dark Knight because..they're already have been made and you're seen them both, whereas Green Lantern has barely gotten into production; so it's not a fair argument..

Two years ago, people probably said the same thing about Iron Man. No we don't know how Ryan's gonna play Hal. No we don't know if it's something that we've seen before (Space police with magic rings is kinda new to me).
  • Craigasorusrex
    All fantastic points.
  • Tercotta
TDK didn't bring anything resembling a new look. It fact it was a watered down look from Batman Begins with a train wreck of a third act.

Iron Man and Batman Begins are the movies you should be mentioning.
  • RyanCarell
I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. While I find The Dark Knight quite likeable, I do think there are some serious structural flaws in it, stemming largely from a messy script.
  • Thoraz
Yeah, because we've all seen so many space-based superheros.
  • Matt
Am I the only one that doesn't think RR is a good choice for the role. I mean, he's funny and looks the part, but RYAN REYNOLDS IS THE SAME IN EVERY MOVIE!!! He does not act, he simply finds new movies to play Ryan Reynolds in. You are not going to be watching Hal Jordan/Green Lantern on screen (like it would have been if someone like Filion or Boreanz got the part), you are going to be watching Ryan Reynolds. There is no difference RR's characters, whether it be Just Friends or X-Men Wolverine.
  • RyanCarell
Please, do your self a favour and watch The Nines. Reynolds plays 3 seperate characters in that film, each with vastly different personalities, all performed quite convinicingly.

If you have indeed seen it, I simply don't know what to say. I'm baffled and I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree.
  • hshadows
I'll just go out on a limb and just agree with you, lol. I've watched The Nines and while I was confused for 90% of the movie, Ryan was great. I also saw Adventureland when it came out. ALSO fantastic. The dude can be anyone he wants. He just chooses to be "Ryan Reynolds" in every movie because that's what people want to see in his movies. That's why people watch his movies. But if he's gonna take on roles that aren't SUPPOSED to be "Ryan Reynolds-y" then he'll be a professional about it and do it right. The dude hams it up a lot....in comedies. How hammy was he in Amityville Horror? That's right...not at all.
  • Travis McGee
I wanted Bradley Cooper for the role. I thought he would have been perfect. Especially if oyu take his character from "The Hangover", that is Hal Jordan.
  • mangoshakes
I watched hangover from an angle to see how Cooper would be. But he didn't have the presence i was hoping for. So i'm glad RR got it over him. Plus his explanation of his audition was lol and also made me think Campbell chose well. plus, Campbell casted him. this guy casted brosnan and craig!!
  • Octoberist
as much as I kinda like Bradley Cooper, I think people are giving him..TOO much credit. I agree, he was alright in The Hangover but it was a roe that anyone could have played whereas the other characters carried the film. I know..I know..Bradley's the jerky straight man but like what you said, he doesn't have the presence that he should have in the movie (due to the overshadow of the cast)
  • hshadows
Oh GOD don't let Scarlett be Carol. Pick someone like Michelle Monaghan or Zooey Deschanel or you know...anyone who ISN'T SCarlett.
  • hshadows
Now they DID say Sinestro is in GREAT physical shape and although Hugo Weaving would be THE perfect ACTING choice for Sinestro, we could get someone who acting wise AND physical wise could be a great Sinestro -- Enter Jason Isaacs. Lucius Malfoy from Harry Potter for those who don't know him by name.
  • OOOH!!!!! I take it back. Hugo would have been awesome, but I didn't even consider Jason Isaacs. He is a WAY more intimidating. i saw 'THE Patriot' when I was fairly young, and he scared the crap out of me. Great call hshadows.
  • Danos
    Joseph Fiennes = Sinestro.
  • RyanCarell
    RALPH Fiennes = Sinestro

Or Gary Oldman. Excepting of course the obvious and absurd DC Film Universe implications.
  • Octoberist
I would go with Ralph Fiennes too.

I know people like Hugo Weaving as Sinestro and I wouldn't be against it at all, I just think Hugo would be too obvious of a choice..does that make sense? I think it's steams from Ryan Reynolds as Hal; I like the casting of Ryan and I think he has great presense on the screen, but it's not the most clever choice for the lead.

I kinda want Sinestro to go to an actor where you go "Yeah...I can see that"..
