This is the first set photo I’ve seen from the Will Smith-produced remake/re-imagining of The Karate Kid, which thankfully has officially been retitled The Kung-Fu Kid. What are they doing?

As you probably know by now, Jaden Smith plays Dre, a skateboarding video game buff who is forced to move to China after his single mother (Taraji P. Henson) is forced to transfer to the China for work. Of course, unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in, and gets beat up by the local bully. Jackie Chan plays Mr. Han (the Mr. Miyagi character), a maintenance man who spots Dre’s black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese, so he can defend against the students of Li Quan Ha’s Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu.

Directed by Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2) and written by Chris Murphy and Steven Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness). Filming on the remake has begun in Beijing, and is expected to last until mid-October. See more photos on SpoilerTV.

  • Name
    I don't like Jackie with a stache...
  • Gelman
Now we're not going to be able to see the words coming out of his mouth.
  • enzomoran
he looks really old with the stache...
  • He's not exactly young... he's 55.
  • Name
55 but he can still prolly kick all our asses lol
  • greggorybasore
I dig the mustache, gives his character a different vibe visually. Makes him look more like a down to earth working stiff.
  • sgtzim
Interesting pics. Good to see someone puppeteering Jaden other than his dad...
  • aaron
I guess this is the new "wax on, wax off"...
  • Craigasorusrex
Ugh this is going to be so lame...
  • GregoryV
    Jackie has a gangsta stache!
  • thats awkward to see an asian man with a little black kid chained up
  • i like the stache. it makes him look different, not like the chan we all know.
  • DragonSauce
I'm sorry but this is going to be a suckfest.
  • I'm just glad they renamed it!

Course i'm not gonna watch it anyway. Dreds and his name is "Dre"!? Horrible.
  • greggorybasore
Those are corn rows, not dreds. As for Dre, what's wrong with that? It seems like a believable name.
  • hard to believe a kook hasn't yet chimed in with a, "That's racist!"
  • Guest
    thats racist,

    just kidding LMAO
  • Gelman
Woah! I don't know how things are over in the UK, but....
  • Gelman
    We call them "Asians" here.
  • Guest
his not calling Asians a Kook. he means a Kook is a crazy person.

on Jackie Chan website he mention that Jaden Smith spent at least two months prior to the start of production training in martial arts with the film’s stunt coordinator Wu Gang. Chan relayed glowing praise for his co-star.

I have seen many young children learn martial arts, but I have never met anyone like him. He learned many Chinese phrases for the different movements of kung fu. When Wu Gang asked Jaden to show me, he barked out his orders in Mandarin. Jaden immediately understood what was asked of him and performed it. When he was thirsty, he gave the traditional hand gesture, putting one fist into the palm of the other, bowed and asked permission to drink some water.

Not only was he hard working, he was respectful, focused and really good! I couldn’t believe it. He showed me every exercise Wu Gang had taught him and finished the demonstration with the “drunken kung fu routine” from one of my own films, DRUNKEN MASTER. He put my son to shame! I provided my son with the best martial artists in the world, and he could not be persuaded to try it. In just two months, Jaden had learned so much. He is truly a talented boy. He could sing, break dance, play ping pong, and now he can do stunts!
  • capawesome
A whole 2 months? WOW just wow!
  • reign
That's almost as long as Keanu Reeves trained for his epic scifi kung fu trillogy, and you know how good he is! Look at how far up he can hold his foot at the end of the Matrix!
  • Hi_there
Yah but Keanu trained while getting neck/back surgery (watch Revisited and check out his neck brace), that's badass. Don't hate, appreciate.
  • greggorybasore
I love how Jackie Chan non-chalantly turns a moment of praising Jaden Smith into an opportunity to publicly criticize his own son.
  • Name
which one the older (jackson) or the one he had with his mistress
  • henriksen2
    "a skateboarding video game buff"
Sounds like every cool kid in a 90's movie.
  • too bad edward furlong is an adult. he would have made for the most reluctant and over-it kung-fu kid/skater video game buff ever.
  • Maybe it's not too late, Eddie Furlong doesn't age like the rest of us. I'd definitely watch this movie if he were taking the role from The Fresh Prince's kid.
  • buckdiddy
I'd actually like to see Jackie in another movie playing a bad guy with a stache. That'd be awesome. Maybe an action comedy type movie.
  • carsonreeves1
There is just no way this can be real. I can't stop laughing.
  • Malarky
this is going to be the worst movie ever made
  • donivan
No,no.it will be up there in the "ranks",but not the worst.Let's have a top ten, shall we? And here we go.

    1.Dragon Ball
2.Street Fighter:The Legend of Chun Li
    3.Street Fighter:The Movie
    4.Double Dragon
    5.Karate Kid 4
    6.Fist of the North Star
    7.DOA
    8.Mortal Kombat:Annihilation
    9.TMNT 2
    10. TMNT 3
  • In other words, don't make movies based on fighting games.

I'm surprised there are no 3 Ninjas that cracked the top ten, or if anything, a Surf Ninja.
  • TMNT 2 one of the worst movies ever? i think not
  • donivan
    Defend.
  • Hi_there
This guy's all wrong. Mortal Kombat Annilhation was one of the worst movies ever made? Nah dude.... nah. Neither of those TMNT movies deserve to be on that list either. TMNT 3, while it had bad costumes, was still entertaining to say the least. And Karate Kid 4? That's so random.... it was't even THAT bad. You're trying WAY to hard.
  • Jackie Chan's sporting a mustache? At least SOMETHING is going to be like the original Karate Kid.
  • Hostile
Holy shit, what is Dustin Hoffman doing to that kid?!
  • lotta221211
I must be the only one who thinks this film has a chance.
  • shadow
THis actually gives me hope for the film. That it actually takes place in a foreign country and the lead is forced to learn a foreign language. Also these images actually show a exercise that is meant to strengthen wrists.

I hated the existence of this film before, but this article is actually making me look forward to the film. The director has alot to prove, but the concept is actually intriguing now and it looks like there might be semi-realistic martial arts training in it.
  • kolbe
Does he have cornrows...and camo cargo shorts on? WTF?
  • Bloop
"Does he have cornrows...and camo cargo shorts on?"

What it odd about that ? Do cornrows and cargos combined not go together in some mysterious way ?
  • Must be a time traveling ninja sent from the late 90s/early 2000s.
  • videophonic
I'm pretty sure its still called the karate kid: http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thekaratekid/
  • That first picture reminds me of the first drunken master movie. Chan's master in the movie used the same thing to teach him movements as I recall.
  • the only reason to watch this: seeing that little shit Jaden get the hell kicked out of him.
  • Yep, as soon as you see he's gaining any kind of fighting skill, it's time to leave the theater or turn off the DVD or switch channels.
  • Wait a minute, Jackie Chan can grow a mustache?
  • CORNROWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
